We reserved a room for one night so we could look for a less expensive hotel. Our friends booked it over the internet. At ... least we had a room. Our friends reservation was not found, so they had no room, and the hotel staff flatly refused to help them find a room. We asked for a receipt for the room charges, and they refused to give us one. In forty years of traveling, we have never run into that. The room was hot, tiny, and uncomfortable, but clean. They were helpful with the luggage. Anywhere in this area of Barcelona, rooms facing the street are particularly noisy except from 4 AM to 6AM, primarily because the streets are narrow, and surrounded by tall, stone buildings. It's an echo chamber of the first order. Even normal conversation on the street is loud. But, you couldn't stay in a more intersting area. Hundreds of restaurants and shops, the tourist bureau a few yards away, and enough history to please anyone. We ended up staying at the Gran Hotel Barcino just down the street. Much larger, more comfortable room, better service, and 29 Euro cheaper. Both hotels are near the Placa de Sant Jaume. Hotel Barcino corporate web site:www.gargallohotels.es. Learn some basic Spanish before you go. Very few people in Barcelona speak English, even at the airport.

Walk, walk, walk. You will see something of interest about every other step. The city comes alive about 7 PM, and stays alive well past midnight. La Romba - a street about 400 meters to the west of the Placa de St. Jaume - is vibrant and crowded, with many pleasant surprises. To the east of the Placa is the Metro station, and further, a beautiful city park. You could spend days within a mile of the Placa, and still not see it all.
