Welcome to New York's Hotel Pennsylvania. It's one of the five largest hotels in Manhattan (over 1700 rooms!) with an impressive history. Its location in the heart of midtown is directly opposite Madison Square Garden and Amtrak's Penn Station. Macy's, the world's largest department store, is one block up the street. The Empire State building, it's around the corner. The Javits Center, it's a few blocks away, so too is the Theatre District. New York's Hotel Pennsylvania is in the center of the action.

They will charge you $4 to store your bag if you can not check in when you arrive. MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR A TEMPORARY BATHROOM CARD when you are paying for the bag storage- it will save you from having to find a bathroom outside the hotel and from having to stand in the check in line again to get one.

Hotel was a disappointment. Arrived early and staff told us to check back around 12:30pm to check in. When came back to ... check, clerk was rude and we ended up checking in at the regular time of 3pm. Lobby was okay. Sofas were torn (where we sat with our luggage for 3 hours along with other customers). When we got upstairs just off the elevator, hall walls were dirty and it smelled. Room was okay size but needed additional cleaning. Floors were old and looked dirty, walls needed painting, faucets in bath dripped all the time and TV remote did not work. Will look for some place else to stay next time.

Staff were all friendly and helpful. With exception of the lobby, the entire hotel needs renovation/updating. The water temp ... in the shower could not be adjusted, would fluctuate from could to scalding hot all by itself. The good thing about the hotel is its location in the city.

I was very disappointed in the hotel for the $ I paid. The hotel was very poorly maintained - peeling paint, grafitti on ... walls, dimly lit, etc. If I did not have a travelling partner, I would have checked out. The location is VERY good for a traveler who is coming into the city through Penn Station.

I was very disappointed in my stay at Hotel Pennsylvania. Lobby was beautiful. Room was old, small, smelly & dirty. Window ... was broken in room. All night, I listen to outside construction. Got no sleep. I waited 1 hour to check-in. Front desk attendant was not pleasant. Maybe she was having a bad day... It's one of the more economical hotels in NYC. However, you get what you pay for.....

Francie Sep 16, 2009
I was very skeptical about booking the Hotel Pennsylvania, but unfortunately I booked very late and because it was fashion ... week, I was left with very very few affordable options. So, I ended up here. Talk about bait-and-switch. The lobby is fine, updated, clean, I was optimistic; then I opened my door and was horrified. One twin bed with a disgusting, filthy bedspread, stains on the walls, a foul odor, chipping paint, AC and hairdryer didn't work. Horrible. Honestly, I don't know how they get away with it. I got up at 5:30am and checked out. Don't stay here. EVER. Oh, and it does take forever to check in.

Rusty Sep 16, 2009
I arrived the hotel around 11:00pm. With a room reserved in their 5000 Penn Club Level. They made me wait until 1:30 am ... before they could give me a room because they said Orbitz had not passed the information. Finally I got the room. Small, smelly, worn out towels, etc. My card would not open the "Club" lounge, so I had to go down to the lobby and request another card, they said I did not have the right to get into the lounge, finally they checked and verified I had the right to have access and gave me a new card. In general a terrible experience. I will not stay there again.

Staff was a mixture of helpful (90%) and couldn't care less (10%). Great location, wonderful, updated lobby. They really ... need to spend more time updating the rooms; carpet is worn, chair fabric is worn terribly, pillows thin. If you are not going to be spending much time in your room, this would be fine for you. One nice thing is a small fridge in the room-great idea!

New York Weekend
Karl Aug 3, 2009
Excellent price and location (in front of Madison Square Gardens and Penn Station). Checking and out lines were long and ... people cut line. Hotel is very old but has been renovated but not recently. Air conditioning is older model (80's) and if you turn it up to high it freezes over and stops cooling. Lots of wear and tear on the rooms but they are clean and the beds are comfortable. If you are looking for a good inexpensive hotel in central downtown this is a good choice. If you are looking for luxury it is not.

This hotel is close to all the downtown attractions. The Tour buses pick up within a block and provide transportation to everything. The metro has direct lines to all the major locations. It is two blocks from the Empire State Bldg and a short metro ride to the ferry to the Statue of liberty. Great shopping in Chinatown walking distance (or via tour bus) where you can get anything not real (ie.counterfeit) for a cheep price. If you go to china town negociate and be very careful. Central park it a distance but the metro and tour buses can take you there.

Hotel Penn
I heart NYC Aug 2, 2009
This hotel has a great location. Midtown with subways at the corner and a train station across the street. Also, ESB and ... Macy's right around the corner and a fairly short walk to Times Square. Also, the price we got on Orbitz was extremely reasonable. However, it is dirty, very outdated and inconvenient. There was not enough outlets and the one in the bathroom was broken and looked like a hazard. ALso, i found bugs in the bathroom and a roach in my suitcase. The hotel is old so the architecture is interesting and how they have designed the rooms is weird. There was a square room that was about 6X6 next to our beds. Just a room, not a closet. Kind of freaked out the kids. I wouldn't mind staying there again if it weren't for the LONG LONG LONG check in lines and the bugs.

Plan your sightseeing trips into 'uptown' and 'downtown' and just take the subway. They are fantastic and a deal! Also, don't skip the Metropolitan Museum of Art because you can't afford the entrance fee--the admission is a 'suggested' donation. Pay what you can to get in and if you can't pay anything--that is OK! Don't miss it!
