We enjoyed our 4 day stay at the Monaco. The staff very helpful. [...] is amazing. Great place for couples. Also very pet ... friendly. The nightly "happy hour" in the front room on cushy chairs! Beer, wine, bourbon. We are going back in April. The only negative is that you can hear shower/toilet flushing in next room.

Fantastic animal friendly hotel!
My husband and I came to Portland Hotel Monaco to relax with our Bichon Frise, our Havachon and our Camalot Macaw. This is ... our second stay at Hotel Monaco with our pets and not our last. We had a fantastic time. The hotel staff, facilities, and activities are outstanding. Being walkers, the location is a comfortable walking distance to any destination. For our longer strolls, we walked to the Hawthorne neighborhood, another day we went to the Nob Hill neighboor. Many attractions we did see, many, many more we have yet to explore . . . next time. Again, there was something to do every moment we were in Portland, if not in the city itself, at the Hotel Monaco's Happy Hour or morning coffee. We will definately be back!

Friendly and aging
Friendly staff. Its older hotel. Colors are 1960's (1940's ?) Had some spots of mildew in shower. Temperature of shower ... almost impossible to regulate. Fridge well stocked - prices about what you'd expect - huge mark-up. Also had basket of snacks and personal care items for sale on table. A little bit too intrusive and commercial for my sensibilities. Good location good price. Pet friendly. 4 stars is a bit of a stretch. I'd call it quiet. People were queued up for (free) wine during wine hour...genteel and a little bit dowdy I'd say.

Everything was perfect
We had a slumber party for my daughter and her best friends. From the moment we got out of our car we were treated like ... royalty. The WONDERFUL concierge brought us a balloon bouquet with a pound of Jelly Belly's tied to the bottom which was a BIG hit. The location is perfect for walking around. Close to great restaurants, shopping, etc. The room we had was a suite and the decor was magical, the beds comfy, the happy hour regional wine bar was terrific too. I cannot wait to return for a romantic weekend with my husband

Wonderful experience and excellent value
Hotel Monaco is centrally located in downtown Portland, close to public transportation in a most walkable city. The ... atmosphere was warm and convivial, with an open wine hour in the evening. The decor is densely layered and applied with a sense of humor. Our room was quiet and spacious. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was surprisingly wonderful as well. The room rate was excellent and made even more affordable by free valet parking. Look forward to returning.

Great place!
We arrived at the hotel a few minutes before their wine hour was ending, and the receptionist asked if we'd like to have them ... hold a bottle of wine for us while we dropped our things in our room so we wouldn't miss it entirely. Of course, we said! So she pulled a bottle out for us, held it at the desk, and gave it to us after we freshened up and came back down. What hospitality! We sipped our wine while listening to a piano player in the lounge, it was wonderful. The rooms were spacious and fun, complete with a cuddly teddy bear and animal print robes. The hotel was close to everything and they graciously allowed us a late check out after a pretty big night out the night before. When I looked lost wandering out of the hotel in the morning, the bellman pointed me in the direction of local shopping and a mall. They get service right!

Room was small but nicely decorated. Ammenities were available but kinda expensive. The gym on the 9th floor was clean and ... had some good equipment. Parking is expensive at $31 a night. Well located in the downtown area within walking distance to most everything.

First timers!
This was our first time at the Monaco and we really, really liked it! Everything was great - the friendly service, the ... location, the free happy hour, the clean rooms, totally pet friendly (with no extra fee!), the environmentally conscious things they did, etc. The only tiny, tiny complaint was that the room was a bit claustrophobic because you couldn't open a window and get some fresh air. Other than that, we'd highly recommend it and we'll definitely go back!

Great Hotel, tricky pricing
The hotel was fantastic and reasonably priced for how nice it was. We LOVED that the entire hotel was pet friendly. It was ... cool watching people with their Irish Wolfhounds, Labs and Pugs all wandering around. The wine hour was great as well. It's complimentary and the donations go to Guide Dogs for the Blind. They had wine, beer and even a few cocktail options. Pretty sweet. My only gripes--and it's probably more my fault than anything--is the the hotel [...] advertise "Free Valet Parking." So I thought, "sweet, free parking at a downtown hotel! For only about 100 bucks a night???" The catch is the 'valet' part of it is free. The 'parking' costs $31/night. It would have been easier if they included overnight parking into the cost instead of making a cute play on words. $31 for parking on a $109 dollar room is a pretty substantial price difference. All together it costs $140 for the night with parking. Still pretty reasonable all things considered. We'll be back again.

The Red Star Tavern attached allows hotel guests to take drinks and food from the bar back to the room. I nice option instead of dropping the big cash on the mini-bar options. Plus they make really nice cocktails and have a decent wine list, so it's higher quality than just pouring a plastic bottle of Jack into a soda cup back in the room.

Nice stay
We enjoyed our stay here, and I would recommend the hotel to anyone. Great location and friendly staff. The only minor ... problem barely worth mentioning was that the hot and cold water in the bathroom could not be moderated. It was an either/or situation in both the shower and the lavatory.

Gem in Downtown Portland
A beautiful, lovely renovated hotel. Beautifully designed rooms and common areas. Morning coffee service and evening wine ... bar. Convenient to all downtown activities -- walking distance to great shopping, restaurants, art museum, riverfront, etc. Wonderful staff; very helpful -- opposite of snooty. They followed up quickly on any questions, comments we had.

Downtown Portland is very "walkable". Blocks are relatively small and compact, easy to get around. Large chain shops and malls, plus local galleries & shops all over. Look for "Original Mother Goose" American crafts store.

fabulosity right downtown
The room was amazing! You walked into a very spacious room that looked like it went on for ever. The bathroom was large and ... well appointed; the sitting room was set off from the bedroom by french doors and both rooms had their own TV. I was traveling on business, but definitely was wishing I had my family there with me. Like all Kimpton hotels the decor is upbeat and hip. I loved all the patterns and interesting pattern and color combos in the rooms. It was slightly less high modern than other Kimptons I have been in but I enjoyed the muted tones and appreciated being in the room while I worked or lounged. By the time I had some free time to enjoy Portland, it was raining, so I was happy to have a big bed to curl up in with a book. The only odd thing seemed to be that everything in the room was for sale. Not just that you could order it from a catalog, but the bear on the bed and the boxers in the closet actually had price tags on them. It was like the commercials in the movie theaters, I already paid to get in, stop selling things to me. My room also looked into an office building across the street, but the curtains on the high windows were lovely with the rainy light coming through. Each night there was a different theme in the lobby for cocktail hour - one night was cupcakes, the next was an animal shelter (I almost came back to California with a puppy). It made for an interesting start to every evening. The staff was friendly and helpful with lots of "welcome back"s and tips on what to do and how to get around. When I called from the airport to ask if I could take the Max, they even suggested making sure my room would be ready for me in time for my early arrival. On my last day, although I had already checked out, they even lent me an umbrella to trudge about with in the drizzle.
