To the Max

Cashu$ Clay Oct 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I was in town for a conference at the Washington State Convention Center. The location of the hotel made walking to and from ... the convention a breeze, and was also close to tons of great shops and restaurants in and around Westlake Center. My first impression when I stepped through the front doors after I had been greeted by the valet attendant, was that the music in the lobby was awesome and that the art was cool too. I was welcomed warmly by the front desk gal who asked if it was my first time at the hotel and what brought me to town. She made checking in easy and asked if she could make any recomendations to me regarding dining, etc. When I asked her how much they charge to use their WiFi, which I saw online there was a fee for, she informed me that she would give me a password to access the Wifi for FREE, which I thought was a really nice touch. When I got off the elevator on my floor I immediately noticed the decor of my hall, every door was a black and white photo of a Seattle musician, Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Eddie Vedder, etc. I couldn't help but walk up and down the hall to check out each door. Once in my room I had two thoughts, this room is really neat and this room is pretty cramped, which was ok because I was staying by myself. The room itself wasn't super small but the bathroom was pretty cramped. That having been said, it had everything in it that I would need for a relaxing night away from home. The one reason that I chose not to give this hotel a 5 star rating was due to the fact that I could hear the guests next door to my room pretty clearly, and although it didn't bother me too much I think that the excess noise would bother others so I thought that should be mentioned. Other than that, if I have the need to stay downtown ever again, I will more than likely check for a good deal at Hotel Max again.

great stay

PDXtraveller Oct 11, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We needed a place to stay for a night in downtown Seattle, and this worked out great. Everything about this hotel was small ... - small elevator, small room, small bathroom - but it was also functional, clean, and comfortable. The staff was friendly and personable, and helpful when it came to arranging for late check out and giving tips on good breakfast places within the walking distance. The big pluses: clean, chic, comfortable (pillow menu!), Aveda bath products, bathrobes in the room, location. Cons: $35 valet parking (no good alternatives), air conditioner/heater was a noisy window unit, and our room's windows faced a wall and some vents - not pretty. That was probably because we went with the cheapest possible option. If we are here next time, we'll be sure to ask for a room with a better view. Overall great stay, we're likely to return.

This hotel is within walking distance (or a quick monorail/street-car/light rail ride) to many attractions, including Pike ... Place Market, Space Needle, Capitol Hill, Safeco and Qwest fields. The hotel is very modern and eclectic. Minimally decorated, so the focus is on the art. The beds are crazy comfortable, and if you don't like your pillow, you can call the front desk to change it out. The staff is willing to go above and beyond to satisfy the customer. The Asian Fusion restaurant in the lobby is tasty and moderately priced. Aveda bath/hair products +++

If you're traveling in from SEA airport, you can use the free Sound Link shuttle to the Tukwila Intl Blvd station and catch the Sound Link Light Rail to the last stop: Westlake. It's about a 4 block walk to the hotel from there. Very quick, and cheaper than parking your car.

The staff was pleasasnt and courteous. The "artiness" of the overall hotel was a nice change from the corporate blandness one ... has come to expect. Our only complaint was the size of the room, especially the shower. However, the bed was comfy and the pillow assortment (you can call down to the desk and staff will bring pillows to meet your needs, firm, soft, etc...) was a nice touch. Moreover, the location is great.

Great hotel with old and new mixed. Really enjoyed the artwork and homey feel in the room. We stayed in a king room, which ... was small, but comfortable for two people for one night. Solid stay, but tiny bathrooms!

Finicky Hawkeye Aug 19, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

All in all we had a good stay with a couple minor drawbacks. The hotel is fun, a bit funky, and clean. The location is ... great -- we walked everywhere. The room was a bit small, but the biggest problem was the tiny bathroom. No more than one person can be in there at a time, and the shower is the size of a small closet (no bathtub). The only other issue I'd have with the hotel is value. For the same price it's probably not in the same league as some similarly appointed hotels (e.g. we could have been at the W or the Fairmount for roughly the same price, and I think other than location those would probably have been better options). It's close, though. The parking is probably the biggest scam -- saw some hotels are offering free parking to hybrids, and I wish Hotel Max would as well! The staff was great, very helpful and responsive to questions. The room was clean and odor-free (always our number one concern). The location is great -- about six easy blocks from the Pike's Place Market.

Nice decor, disorganized service

Infrequent Flyer Jul 21, 2009

We were in Seattle to relax and see friends. The hotel was close to the shopping district, which was convenient. I liked ... the modern decor, and the beds were very comfortable, with soft, high-threadcount cotton sheets and duvet cover (no polyester bed armor). The room was tiny, which given the price wouldn't have been so bad if so much space were not wasted or taken up with the honor bar and other items for purchase (2 large bottles of water, a t-shirt, a bottle of wine). The refrigerator was completely full with beverages for purchase. There were 3 tiny drawers available for our clothes, and the larger nightstand had only a single tiny drawer even though there was room for 3 good-sized drawers. The shower was the smallest I had ever seen, and to boot had a shower curtain that was sucked into the stall whenever the water was running. The staff was friendly but disorganized. When we showed up at around 1:30 there were no rooms ready so we went next door to the restaurant for lunch (which was understaffed and a bit in disarray). After lunch we checked in without incident. On the afternoon of the second day, upon returning from a shopping trip, we found that our card keys had been inactivated; when we went to the desk we were told they had been coded incorrectly. When we got back into our room someone had left chocolates and a welcome note addressed to someone who was not staying in our room. When we checked out we were charged for 6 nights of parking even though we did not have a car. We protested and the error was corrected but apparently the the credit card is charged immediately upon printing of the receipt while reversing the charge takes several days. This is likely not the fault of the hotel, but given this state of affairs it would have been nice to see the charges before they were made so they could be corrected if necessary. One final issue, also not necessarily the hotel's fault, is that despite the hotel having only non-smoking rooms there was someone smoking on our floor and it was enough to cause the entire hallway to reek of smoke. We alerted the front desk and after that we could only occasionally smell cigarette smoke when we had the windows open. Perhaps there need to be more signs reminding people not to smoke.

Park on the street if you plan to be in and out and it's a weekend. $30 valet may not be worth it, even though it has in and out privileges.

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

Halfway down the hill to Pike Place Market is Post Alley. Find the Tasting Room and have a flight of wine. What a fabulous, casual, fun, place! If you're with friends, play one of their board games! I defy you to spend less than an hour there!

--Amy the wine lover!, Philadelphia, PA Jul 12, 2009

Don't rent a car if you're staying in downtown Seattle unless your hotel is offering free valet service. Prices range from $25 - 32 for all day/overnight parking. On another Seattle trip we stayed at an outlying hotel and the parking fee was only $10 a night.

Amazing, homemade, casual dining for mexican food- affordable and great environment- go to Mama's Kitchen in Belltown.

--jmm, Washington, DC Jul 1, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

Do not take taxi going to and from the pier and this hotel, those drivers had a bad attitude because it was short drive and the taxi fare should be less than $7.00 but they charged $15.00

--acbusi68, Hawaii Jun 13, 2009

Recreation/Attractions hint, Short Walk

The trolley is a very short walk from the Hotel. Use it to get to Lake Union and take the Lakes tour. It was wonderful! Also, bring your passport. Would have LOVED to have gone on a whale watching tour. They are not easily accessed from Seattle without a car as the ports of departure are located north of Seattle . The only one's we could have gone on without renting a car required a passport as they stopped in Canada.

Dining hint, Short Walk

Many of the bars & restaurants in Seattle offer happy hours every evening from about 4:00 - 7:00, then again from 10:00 -12:00. It's a great way to splurge on several different cuisines without getting too full or breaking your budget. Most of them within walking distance to the hotel.

Take the time to enjoy the "Market" area and do some people watching. Fascinating and enjoyable. flower bouquets were gorgeous to see and street venders were very creative!!
