I used to live in SF. I had a friend who lived by the hotel, so I passed by it all the time. When I moved out of the city ... (*tear*), I knew that I wanted to book a room here during one of my visits. I wasn't disappointed! All I cared for was a quiet, safe, and clean place to sleep. That's exactly what I got :). I saw a bar inside, but I believe SF is too eventful of a city to stick around the hotel, so I didn't check it out. The staff was helpful and pleasant. The room was adorable!! It was very clean, affordable, quiet, and had vintage charm. The hotel itself is a walk away from Fillmore and Japantown. It's also a short bus or taxi ride to Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and Union Square. I was even able to walk down California St. from there to Embarcadero (I'm big on walking). It was a VERY scenic 25-block, downhill walk. I loved it!! Haha. Anywhere you want to go in the city (such as a park, beach, shops, museum, zoo, theater, campus or whatever) is a short trip away, because the hotel is in the center of the city! :) It's close enough to feel a part of the action- especially at night, but is located in a safe area. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to those who insist on bringing their car. I wouldn't recommend this CITY for those who insist on bringing their car. I recommend this hotel to those who really want to experience San Francisco, but want to end the day in an elegant setting. Definitely worth it! :)

I loved this old hotel. Yes, the curtain was a bit torn and the room a bit small but one could always get a larger room for ... a bit more money. I loved the artwork inside the elevator and the lobby. The staff was very accommodating and for our purposes, the location was excellent. It's easy to get everywhere in the City as the hotel is just off Van Ness. We had a wonderful time.

Go to Mel's Drive In for breakfast...prices not bad...they follow instructions on cooking your eggs, and the coffee is DELICIOUS! It's two blocks to Van Ness and two blocks to the right from the Majestic Hotel on Sutter. I had not ONE bad cup of coffee in San Fran...that recommends a town to me!

There is a fantastic old bar/eatery on the corner of Van Ness and Sutter. Has every beer you can possibly imagine and some of the best pub food you can ask for. There are also more fine dining restaurants w/in walking distance.

Small but Cheap, and so worth it.
Alex From Boston Sep 17, 2009
Was skeptical at first, because many hotel reviews mentioned that this hotel was in a bad area. I went there and found that ... this is not at all the case, this hotel is right downtown. Also, for those who don't feel comfortable around homeless people, I have a tip, don't go to San Fransisco, I saw alot of reviews that mentioned the homeless, if you come from the Sub's and have never lived in a city, you probably won't like San Fran. But this is a safe nice hotel, in a good neighborhood for a good price, what more could you ask for?

Hotel Majestic is in a great location because it's off the beaten path but easily accessible. The hotel staff was friendly ... and helpful. Walking distance from a lot of restaurants and bars. The room was small but nice, it had a canopy bed and claw-foot bathtub - very historic. If you want air conditioning you must request during your reservation process.

Majestic has pluses but minuses as well!
Frankie Jul 9, 2009
1) Hotel website suggests they have a fabulous restaurant with a super chef....The restaurant has in fact been closed for 3 ... months...I suggested they update their website and the clerk shrugged apologetically and said, "I know..." 2) I did not patronize their bar for the hors d'oeuvres they offer. 3) Two mornings of my 4-morning stay, there was not even a continental breakfast offered because "she didn't come in today." Mind you, I would not have had breakfast there anyway because the prices for cold fare, like muffins and cereal, were outrageous. 4) Love the open windows, though, and the fact that we were able to turn on the heat in the cold July San Fran temperatures.. Note to travelers: Do not go to San Fran in the summertime if you're cold-natured...you will FREEZE! 5) In our room, there was a big "welcome basket" of goodies...do NOT TOUCH IT....the prices are disguised on the items, and they are astronomical.....if you think you're being welcomed, thing again...Our luggage was lost, and we wanted a toothbrush, but the one in the basket was not complementary, it was over $3....we went out and bought one!

The Hotel Majestic is an old hotel, has been in operation for 100+ years. The hotel itself was very clean and well ... maintained for its age. It is like taking a step back into time when you walk into its ornate Lobby and similarly decorated rooms. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality which was in line with the price paid, if not a little above.

Would definitely stay here again
Kelly Jun 29, 2008
I love this hotel. It is old-fashioned and cozy and has a great history. The literature in the room states that Joan Fontaine ... and Olivia de Havilland used to live here full time, and that Nicolas Cage and Julia Roberts hang out in the bar downstairs. The Majestic is within walking distance of Japantown, the Fillmore Auditorium, at least two movie theaters, major public transportation, plenty of restaurants and there's a Rite-Aid right around the corner. Once the valet parked my car, I didn't need it again the rest of my stay. Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was super-comfortable but a little on the small side (I stayed in a single room with a double bed). Traffic noise is to be expected, as you are staying in the middle of San Francisco! A very charming hotel with basic amenities (free wi-fi is always a plus!!!) and reasonable rates. I will stay here again.

My review of Hotel Majestic San Francisco
Julie Dec 11, 2007
Positive note about this hotel is that it's well located, clean and the lobby is well docorated. I feel comfortable enought ... in my room. On the other hand, I feel that the following areas could be improved: need more lively color for room decoration; need to have at least a continental breakfast for customers convenience (we need to grasp something for breakfast before leaving for the airport, but the service was closed and we did not know the neighborhood enought to go out for a quick bite). The room is small, bathroom is quite small and uncomfortable, but clean, the environment is a little unwelcoming because of the lack of food services.

My daughter and I look forward to our next visit to SF and the Hotel Majestic. The staff is helpful and friendly, meeting ... our shuttle on the sidewalk and greeting us.The newly redone restaurant is lovely. Our room was quite small but tastefully decorated and quiet. And being in Pacific Heights was a plus. Not so hectic and convenient to transportation, Little Tokyo, the Fillmore Shops and Restaurants and Cow Hollow.

Breakfast in the dining room was a bit pricey, more than we wished to pay. Nothing elaborate but just to get you going.

Nice historic property
Ben Sep 4, 2007
The Hotel Majestic was a perfect setting for our honeymoon. It was a nice change from the modern facilities I am used to. ... The staff was excellent. Our basic room was small compared with today?s standard but it was decorated with what I would imagine was furniture and moldings from the 1900?s. The bathroom was well supplied with soaps, lotions, bathrobes, etc and outfitted with antique fixtures. There was, however, no exercise facility and the local gym they had an agreement with wanted to charge three times what I was told it would cost. I would recommend the Hotel Majestic especially for those who enjoy a historical experience.
