We walked to the Shedd Aquarium (long walk but great exercise and no cab fares), shopped on State St. and went to dinner at ... Catch 35 (a block or two from Hotel 71). Food was fantastic! Saturday we took the train (caught Red Line on State Street) to Lincoln Park and shopped, had lunch at Pasta Palazzo (fabulous!). Went to Blue Man Group at Briar Street Theater that night. Ate at Jack's on Halstead after the show (1 block walk from theater) and people watched. Sunday we did the Wendella architectural boat tour on the river. Price was great at $23 for an hour on the river. The weather was perfect and tour guide was awesome. Then more shopping on Michigan Ave. Ate lunch at the Grand Lux Cafe (above Ann Taylor Loft on Michigan). Never been there before but their menu was insane. It was a dozen pages long. Great food and the desserts were to die for. All the food we had all weekend was awesome. I'm having withdrawals now.

Save money by parking in a public parking garage. There are lots of them within walking distance of the hotel. Also, no cabs needed! We did all our traveling by foot or train. Catch the red line on State Street for a fraction of the cost of a cab.

When I arrived, the man at the curb walked quickly up to my green 1993 Toyota Camry to tell me I couldn't park there. I told ... him I needed a valet because I was staying at the hotel. He was probably a little embarrassed and I was good humored about it but the moral of the story is that your employees should speak to EVERYONE as if they are a welcome guest then if you find out it's just someone trying to illegally park their old beater in front of your hotel, deal with it then. The people at the front desk were very nice and the man who helped us up to the room then later to catch a cab was very attentive. I wish I could remember their names. I'd stay there again and recommend it to others.

After reading some mixed reviews before our stay, we weren't sure what to expect at Hotel 71 except a great location. I'm ... happy to report, we were impressed with every aspect of Hotel 71, including the location. The front desk staff (and other staff) were friendly, efficient and extremely helpful with recommendations, reservations and directions. The room was spacious, comfortable and spotless. The location is great for sightseeing--within walking distance of many sights and an easy bus ride to most others. We would definitely return to Hotel 71 and recommend it to our friends and family.

There's a GREAT little breakfast cafe (you've got to eat outdoors!) just a 100 yards away - they serve lunch as well, but I only went there for breakfast! O'Brian's is another great (outdoor) cafe on the opposite side of the road (on the riverside!) it's on the lower level along the river and it has a WONDERFUL pasta fruit salad!!!

Hotel 71 was a nice hotel. This was our first trip to Chicago, and it was a great experience. Hotel Parking Fees are ... outrageous and you can park next door in an open lot for half the cost of valet without in and out priveledges. My only complaint is that the room doors have to be pulled shut which bangs throughout the hallway. It was hard to get a good night sleep when you think the door next to your room is being open and closed when in fact it is the entire floor. The view was great and the fitness center makes for a great place to take photgraphs.

We were in town for a triathlon. We arrived early and had no problem for an early check-in. The staff was patient and ... friendly. The service wasn't perfect as we had to call a couple of times for delivery of a roll-away bed, but they provided it at no charge. The best part was the location, on the river and the views were incredible from the 32nd floor. Elevators were quick, although the concierge service was spotty...but you got to know quickly who to ask about what to do in the city. We stayed four nights and felt we lucked out with this pick at the end of every day. The prices we paid on Orbitz were phenomenol, the rooms were large, and very clean. We did not stay in the rooms much and there was no pool, but the fitness center had up to date equipment and I was not limited in any way. There were mostly weight training machines, with only a couple of treadmills, but I never saw anyone else using the fitness center, so there was no problem...might be in the winter. Overall, no question where I would stay again, Hotel 71 was a great pick and I would highly recommend it.

THE ROOM WAS OLD AND NEGLECTED: The upholstery on the furniture was torn. The wallpaper was peeling. There was a stain on ... the bed cover. There was no closet in the room; the only closet was in the bathroom. PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET ACCESS: The wirless internet very often did not work and even when it did, the quality was very poor. Wireline internet was not available as an option. I spent much time on the phone with technical support, to no avail. WAS NOT GIVEN THE TYPE OF ROOM I HAD REQUESTED: I stayed at Hotel71 while traveling for business with my wife. After booking the room with Orbitz, I called Hotel71 to ask for a room with one king size bed and was told that it was available and would be held for me. When I arrived, I was told that all such rooms had been given to others and was given a room with two beds.

The newly renovated hotel was perfect for our stay. It is centrally located and we were able to get around using public ... transporation, walking and a couple of cabs. The rooms were very comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful. The workout room was tight, but better than many I have seen. They are just getting off the ground with their restaurant, but the minimal breakfast options fit what we were looking for. This was a wonderful experience- one I'd gladly repeat.

Cannot say enough good about this hotel!
kokotele Aug 26, 2009
I have never encountered a friendlier or more helpful staff at any hotel, and that applies from the front desk to the bellmen ... and everyone in between. They went out of their way to be helpful, and the bellmen recognized me each time I returned and welcomed me back in a way that made me believe it, not that they were just being courteous and doing their jobs. The room was spotless, spacious, and the view was incredible. The hotel is situated in a bend in the Chicago River, so the rooms with a river view are essentially looking straight west along the river. The view is spectacular. The single negative thing I have to say about the hotel is that they use the firmest mattresses I have ever encountered, which was very uncomfortable for me. If you like a firm mattress, then you'll love it.

If you've never done it before, a river tour is a must, and you can board a block from the hotel. One of the tour companies operates a tour on the river, which then goes out onto the lake as well. If you get on the last cruise of the day you'll see a spectacular sunset behind the skyline.

I enjoyed my stay at Hotel 71--we were central to the el train lines as well as the cta bus lines. the staff at hotel 71 ... were professional and always helpful! my favorite person there would have to be the bellman!! while we were close to the elevator and heard a few noises, it wasn't anything unbearable. i read previously that a few people complained about the elevator service, and i had no problem (we were on the 27th floor!)
