A quiet hotel, but fun getaway

We were going on our first Cruise and we wanted to think outside the box and stay in an extraordinary hotel. The Horton Grand ... Hotel is amazing. If you can appreciate Victorian Antique Architecture and Design this is place for you! It is just lovely. I am so glad we decided to stay there and I am going to book this Hotel for every San Diego trip I make. The location is fabulous, downtown is booming, and it is very close to the pier. We highly recommend it to everyone of all ages. There are lots of things to take in and appreciate at The Horton Grand Hotel!Everything you could possibly need is within 5 minutes driving or 20 minutes walking! It's perfect if you want to have a lot of fun, or if you just want to take in the good oldfashioned way things used to be!

The Trading Post offered some coupons for things happening in town during our stay! They also sell maps of San Diego! For some reason they are really hard to find, Albertsons nor CVS has maps so save yourself the headache and go to the Trading Post!

Quaint but overrated
Jay Oct 21, 2009
The hotel has a nice location and is very quaint. Rooms are squeaky small and the place is understaffed. Parking rate is ... $25 a day, which I consider outrageously expensive. Staff is less than friendly. No coffee makers in rooms and they remove the coffee in lobby at 8am!!!!!! I would not stay there again.

I was in town for a conference at the San Diego Convention Center and I've traveled to the point where I'm done with the big ... chain hotels. So, I like to try these less known local places [...]The location is great for the Convention ctr. But there is really no food or even snacks in the hotel. There is no lobby bar or local watering hole on the block. The rooms are Very small, and the walls thin, but my room had a balcony that looked off onto a tree and a fireplace but no closet. Not a bad place, very clean and well kept, but I don't know that I'd stay there again.

Quiet, a bit dated
Lanth Aug 5, 2009
The hotel is in a good location in downtown San Diego. The architecture and furniture are supposed to be late 19th or early ... 20th century, and that gives it some charm. The interior is dated, and the hotel does not have a bussiness center. It's also somewhat expensive for what it has to offer. I'd recommend it for a getaway, but not for a bussiness trip.

Good Location in the Gaslamp Quarter
Traveling baseball fan Aug 3, 2009
Extremely helpful staff and excellent location. No pool, part-time restaurant and bar are all slight drawbacks. However with ... the many food and drink establishments in the area it's not a real problem. Walking distance to Petco is a big plus. Our room had a balcony which allowed us to watch the craziness on the street but that same craziness could cause some noisy nights if you have a lower level room on the street. Over all a fine place to stay once for a quick trip to San Diego.

The hotel is located directly in the Gaslamp District so we could walk everywhere. It was very pretty and nice memorabilia ... decorating the hotel. However, it was very loud. We were on the second floor and we could hear people walking and creaky floors above us, all night long. Our room needed a paint job. The pillows were uncomfortable. Front desk staff was friendly, but the valet parking guy was not. He didn't open the trunk to our vehicle or put our luggage in the vehicle upon departure, like he did for the 4 previous vehicles in front of us.

Can not check-In until 3pm No coffee pot in the room. Everything is within walking distance, but if you drive the parking ... fees are $25.00 per night, and the garge maybe full. Therefore you must find parking on the street which meters will require you watch the time and cost. If you park in the 5 Star lot, it will cost you 20 per night and you have to move by 7am or pay additional amounts.

There are numerous restaurants spanning a wide range of cuisine and atmospheres along 5th Ave, including Indian, Thai, Carribean, Italian, Mexican, and Irish, as well as a couple excellent seafood restaurants and a traditional steakhouse. The Field Pub has numerous beers on tap, including Irish faves (Guinness, Smithwicks, and Harp) as well as Bass and Boddington's from the UK. The atmosphere and menu are classic Irish fare (my waitress was from County Cork). They have a folk singer several evenings and an Irish band usually on Fri or Sat night; they also broadcast major GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) events on the flatscreen TVs. Another outstanding restaurant was Masala (Indian cuisine)--nothing short of phenomenal! The atmosphere is very elegant, service is terrific, and the food is the best Indian I have had in the U.S. borders. We shared 3 entrees and all three were fantastic (Vindaloo Chicken, Palak Lamb, and Navrattan Korma. The mango salad was also very tasty, and their version of hummus (seasoned with yellow curry) was a deligtful variation on this traditional Mediterranean dish. I did not make it to the Oceanaire, but I heard great things about it (in keeping with its reputation in other cities where I have eaten there). On the NEGATIVE side, the restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel (Maryjane's Coffeeshop) was a TOTAL disappointment--loud music, distracting videos playing on screens right at the table (and having no correspondence with the music), and a limited menu of overpriced and unremarkable food. It was the single disappointment amidst an otherwise wonderful visit to San Diego.
