Better Than Expected, But Needs Work
NJ Business Traveler Nov 14, 2009
The exterior and lobby of the hotel make a very favorable impression. The rooms are satisfactory and the restaurant on the ... main floor has decent food at a good value. The front desk staff were less than helpful and didn't seem to want to actually talk to anyone who approached the desk. It's the hospitality industry...be HOSPITABLE! Also, the rooms were not well cleaned (don't look under the beds because they don't clean under there...ever) And I did make the mistake of walking around barefoot in the room and caught a nasty case of athletes foot. Other than that, for the room price and location, and proximity to NYC it was not a bad deal.

One of the worst hotel stays
Vicky Nov 12, 2009
Room was stuffy, carpet worn out and housekeeping had forgotten to put coffee maker in the room. Despite three phone calls ... in 1.45 hrs, and their promises to send the coffee maker to the room, it was never sent. Finally when I went down to the reception at about 11 pm, I was told that coffee maker is with housekeeping and they have locked teh storage for the night.

Andy Nov 3, 2009
Considering the location near to Newark International Airport, the cost of the room was extremeely reasonable. The restaurant ... was very busy and appeared to be inderstaffed. I ordered the London Broil but it wasn't very appetizing. A couple sitting next to me had problems; the husband ordered a rare steak - it arrived well done.

The shuttle to pick you up from the airport took a very long time to come. Other hotels' shuttles came at least 2x. I was ... told that the shuttle operates every 20-30 minutes..... The first room I was given was very dirty. There was no remote for the TV. There was some nasty red stuff on the bathtub. I called down to switch rooms. I was given another room but not told before hand that this room was smaller. After I got to the 2nd room I figured whatever with the size of the room, the world series was about to start. This second room did have a remote but was equally dirty. The toilet bowl had the seat up ( what does that mean? did someone just use the toilet before I got in?)One of the lamps had pasta sauce all over it. The bed looked like it hadn't been cleaned for a while. The floor was horrifyingly dirty. On top of that while I was sleeping on the bed I was itchy. So I slept with the lights on hoping to ward off any bed bugs. I also turned on the air conditioner bc it smelled really bad in the room. So both rooms were terrible. Don't bother staying here, pay a couple extra dollars and stay somewhere else if this ends up being the cheapest. Not worth it. P.S. when you walk in the lobby they have flat screen tvs and might start thinking ok they have flat screen tvs here. NOPE old zenith brands from the early 90s. They do have a 24hr cafe as a plus.

Rooms were dirty, mold was apparent in the bathroom. smelled. Staff were rude. Service was bad. Stayed for six nights (2 ... rooms) and treated with disrespect. Many echoed the same when we're at the lobby or even on the shuttle. Staff are not truthful. Extremely unhappy and the $$ was not worth it.

Poor service, but nice bar/restaurant
Yankees Fan Oct 19, 2009
We chose to stay here due to it's proximity to Newark airport, but we were actually there for a Yankees baseball game, so ... didn't spend much time at the hotel. The person at the front desk was rude, it took over 2 hours and 3 phone calls to get clean towels, and our waitress at the restaurant was impolite and she talked so quietly that we could barely hear her. I wouldn't recommend this hotel due to the poor customer service.

I got dropped off at Journal Square and took the Path service in to the city. My flight was the next day out of Newark so I took NJ Transit (which is next to Madison Square Garden) from the city to the airport and took the shuttle from the airport to Holiday Inn. The price of NJ Transit from MSG to Newark Airport is $15 one-way. Always carry a GPS!

Look up local taxi companies rather than use the taxi from the hotel. If you plan to use the taxi for more than one trip, you can negotiate a rate that is about 10% less than what they initially quote.

If going to New York City, the cheapest way we found was to catch the bus in the loop just off the highway, about a 7 minute walk from hotel. Take the bus to Newark Penn station, from there take the PATH train to New York City for 1.75. Bus is 1.35. This is the cheapest way but not the fastest. And it gets old if you have to do it often.
