Better Location than expected
Travelin' dad Nov 1, 2009
My family of three (teen son) stayed at this hotel over Halloween weekend of 09. I travel in Chicago for business a lot and ... usually stay at the Mag. Mile Doubletree or Palmer House. Since this was on my dime, I[...] found a good deal on the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza. The location turns out to be great for walking around the downtown, we were able to walk to the Sears Tower in about 15 minutes, and Navy Pier in about half an hour. When it rained, cabs were conveniently waiting for us.The room and service were great. The only real problem was that two of the three nights there were parties in the ballroom, which was located right under our room. The Hotel was kind enough to offer to move us or give us a free breakfast to make up for the racket (which ran to about midnight each night) but we were up that late anyway so it wasn't that bad, could have been if we'd needed an early bedtime. Try to book a room higher than the 16th floor to avoid this problem.Make sure to take advantage of the extra fee for a room with a view. Our view was a highlight of the trip and really made the say something special.

Not so good
Neo Sep 29, 2009
The location is not so bad. But it's hard to walk around most of the city attractions. We had to use taxi to go to most of ... the city attractions. We chose veiw option with extra fee, but we only to veiw east side of the city where there's nothing to see except ordinary buildings, warehouses, and railways. The toilet was not flushed. So, we needed plumbing at night. But the plumbing service was quick and room maid cleaned the bathroom in the middile of the night kindly. The part of room floor was wet all days. It might be leaking from somewhere. I do not recommend this hotel to my friends.

If family trip, they would need taxi to most city attractions

The hotel was very nice, room had a terrific view, very quiet. We had to ask for a late check out and there was a charge for ... that, but after seeing the line at the desk when we left, I was suprised they allowed us to stay as long as we did. The front doorman was great. It was a bit odd having the hotel inside a business building, so you had to hunt for the hotel lobby (on the 15th floor) and then you had an additional set of elevators to use, but not too inconvenient. Close to a lot of things or a short cab ride away. Was a STEAL for the price we paid!

Short Trip - Great Hotel
Mike Sep 27, 2009
The hotel staff was very friendly, the facilities were very clean, and the bed was super comfortable. This is the first ... hotel I have stayed at that had a nice 32" LCD TV. Most of the hotels I've stayed in recently still had the old tube TV's. I would highly recommend this hotel if you want a nice affordable hotel with a convenient location.

The Customer Service was awesome. The view of the skyline was absolutely beautiful. [...] the door man so awesome, very ... friendly and keep us in the loop about the free jazz festival and took real good care of us. The shopping was great, sightseeing and the view of the city was SOOOOO AWESOME....We upgraded for the view and it was worth every penny. I will highly recommend it to anyone. Three thumbs up!!! I had a wonderful stay.

In and Out parking was convenient and reasonable for Chicago. Although not near the main drag for shopping and buses, there ... were many businesses within walking distance if you knew where you wanted to go. Would try the water taxis next time since they were so close to hotel.

The hotel was part of a huge indoor complex but walking in from the ground floor it was difficult to figure out where to go! ... There was a big information desk but you couldnt check in there - instead you had to take these side elevators to the 15th floor (confusing) and then there was another set of elevators to get to your room. this got annoying if i forgot to bring something and we would have to get all the way back but other than that no complaints. This was in a great location and the rooms were a nice size and clean.

Great hotel for a short business trip. Fast free Internet in the lobby and room... and no wifi dead spots that can happen ... with a hotel this size. The room was clean and functional, with a sofa and desk... good for in-hotel business meeting/briefs. N. Michigan Ave was a 10-15 min walk. House of Blues 7-10 min walk. The famous Harry Carry's Restaurant was 5-7 min walk. Price per night and location were at a good price ratio.

I was not told by Orbitz that a room w/a view was an extra charge, the cost was only 20.00/night but it would've been nice to ... know in advance. The extra charge was worth it, my view was AMAZING...pay the 20 bucks if you stay there! The rooms were clean, the staff friendly and, over all, I have no complaints. If you like to walk the city (I do) this hotel is well located, you are a short walk from everything. I'm a small female and I was traveling alone and I walked at night many times by myself and took the trains...I NEVER had any problems or felt unsafe. Oh, I forgot... the hall had a funny smell, but only on days it rained. It didn't effect the room but was a bit odd. Probably related to the humidity.

Chicago Fan Aug 18, 2009
The hotel was within walking distance of the CTA - we did everything by public transportation or on foot. The rooms were a ... nice size and comfortable. Unfortunately the hotel is on top of a business building so the food court and most shops were closed in the evening and on the week-end. We couldn't access the walkway to the train on Sunday as it was locked. Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay very much.

Best Hotel In The Loop!
Jenny Jul 19, 2009
This is the best hotel in the area. For certain has the biggest rooms you will find. The view of the river is spectacular! ... Check in and check out was super fast. Having the Merchandise Mart connected to the building was extremely convenient for food, ATMs and getting on the Brown Line. Not overpriced, very clean rooms. My only complaint is that you can hear everything that's going on in the bathroom, so make sure the TV is on if you're shy!

If you want to save some $$ coming from O'Hara, take the blue line train, then transfer to the brown line. Once you get to Mart Plaza, you have about a 4 minute indoor walk to the Holiday Inn (Chicago Sun-Times building.) The Holiday Inn Lobby is actually on the 15th floor. So even though there is a sign saying Holiday Inn on the 1st floor (and all you see are 3 elevators,) the actual lobby is on the 15th floor.
