On the nine-mile long stretch of sunny Kohala Coast, Hilton provides the ultimate luxury resort - the Hilton Waikoloa Village. There is no other hotel like it in Hawaii. This 62-acre resort has everything- a 4-acre swimming and snorkeling lagoon, 3 freshwater swimming pools, sun-drenched beach, interactive dolphin encounter program, more than 7 million dollars in art, waterfalls, exotic gardens, trams and canal boats.

The Hilton Waikoloa is a destination in itself. Arriving guests cruise on mahogany boats along tranquil waterways to expansive guest rooms. All have lanais with seating and whether you have a garden, mountain, golf course, full or partial ocean view- the view will be spectacular. Guests may choose to travel through the resort by boat, by air-conditioned trams, or by strolling along walkways flanked by Polynesian and Oriental artwork. This Hawaiian playground offers virtually every activity under the sun - from snorkeling and swimming to scuba diving and nearby deep sea fishing- and some unique adventures such as the Dolphin Quest interactive program with bottlenose dolphins. This activity is conducted under the expert guidance of professional trainers.

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is home to two 18-hole championship courses. The Beach Course is designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and the King's Course by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. Set among the lava fields and by the adjacent ocean, the Hilton Waikoloa courses are among the very best in Hawaii.

For tennis enthusiasts, there are 7 plexicushion tennis courts and a 450-seat stadium court.

The 25 thousand square foot Kohala Sports Club & Spa offers European-style treatments including Limu (seaweed) body wraps, a variety of massages including Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi, facials and a full service beauty salon.

For children from ages 5-12, there is Camp Menehune. It is an adult supervised day-time activity program where our younger visitors can build their own Hawaiian memories to treasure.

Each of the restaurants offers distinctive cuisine exquisitely prepared and presented. From gourmet dining in elegant surroundings to casual poolside snacks or a tropical drink in one of the many lounges, we'll be certain the experience is outstanding. The Hilton Waikoloa Village - truly more Hawaii than you can imagine. Helping Guests and Team Members to be their best.

I was technically there for a conference. I took my husband for some R&R as well, and we fell in love with it! Staff was ... great, local people were very kind as well. I loved the Big Island, we went on some excursions recommended by the hotel and had a great time. We loved the dolphin lagoon. Room was a great size with a great view. We can't wait to go back

Shopping hint, Short Walk

There are shopping areas within walking distance, (I believe a free shuttle is available too). Bring $$,,Hawaii is, of course, expensive. Tiffany store there, but also Macy's ,etc. Great restaurants nearby.Best buy for breakfast was a quick bkfst sandwhich at the lagoon within the hotel , lunch is affordable there too. We did rent a car to explore the island more /hadn't planned on it ahead of time ,but it was better for getting to the excursions, ie helicopter,, atv,,,horseback riding,,,and parasailing !! But I would've been just as happy staying at the hotel the whole time, pool was great, room service, etc

Recreation/Attractions hint

The drive along the east to south coastline of Highway 137 starting at Kapoho down to the lava viewing point is the most spectacular ocean views on the island. If viewing the lava flows in September, arrive about 6 pm, at least 20 minutes before sunset so you can hike over the dried lava tubes before it gets dark and be at the viewing point at dark to see. Bring a strong flashlight with you and wear good hiking shoes to avoid twisting an ankle or more severe injury on the hike back to the car in the dark. A walking stick is helpful. The hike into the viewing area during daylight takes 15-20 minutes. The hike out in the dark takes at least twice as long.

We were greeted with a warm welcome and the service everywhere at the resort was wonderful. We snorkeled and kayaked and ate ... great food and one evening watched the clouds drift over the moon with the warm breeze and sounds of the ocean in a hammock under some palm trees. It was a perfect place to spend our 25th annivesary and we will be back!

MY STAY

Andrew Sep 12, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I stayed in the Lagoon Tower right above the Dolphin pools. It was awsome to look out every morning and evening and watch the ... Dolphins do their thing. I had a great time at the Dolphin Quest adventure, which is on property. This was the best part of my trip. Over all the whole stay was wonderfull. The Lagoon on property had lots of pretty collored fish and the turtles. The turtles would move from the far end of the lagoon to the waterfall every morning at about 8:00 AM and I found this to be the best time to catch a swim with them. I got some really great pictures. The Kona Pool was wonderful with plenty of space to sit around and a waterfall with a slide. I will return.

The good and the bad

OnlineJoan Sep 10, 2009

The best part of the hotel was the art gallery which featured local artists. The gallery staff person was incredibly ... knowledgeable and graciously helpful. Our room was spacious and lovely, except for the lone cockroach that was in the bathtub upon arrival. Housekeeping service was hit and miss, sometimes forgetting to replace washclothes and often not changing out the ice bucket liner. We stayed in the Ocean Tower and there were VERY noisy birds that screeched all night which didn't bother me but might bother other guests trying to sleep. Most of the hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. We had the misfortune of a grumpy, untruthful server at the Ocean Towers cafe who told me there was no ice cream in the Coco Mo drink (but there was, which was not good for my lactose intolerant husband with whom I was sharing the drink) and when I asked what the unusual leaf was that was listed on the menu for the buger impatiently and erroneously told me that he didn't know but insisted it would not be in the burger. It was. The part of the island that this hotel is located on is referred to by locals from other areas of the island as the "armpit of the island". If you are interested in visiting the lush areas, seeing erupting volcanic action, Akaka Falls, interacting with locals, etc. then you are better off staying on the other side of the island around Hilo. Otherwise, the drive from the Hilton Waikaloa to the other side takes 2.5-4 hours one way. The southern route is much slower with winding roads. If you are interested in high end shopping and seeing a Vegas style version of Hawaii, then Hilton Waikaloa is perfect for you.

Great for 6 year old, not so for adults

DaddyDoItAll Sep 7, 2009

The lagoon, pool slides, and swimming with dolphins were great, especially for my 6 year old boy. $60 for waffles and an ... omlette for breakfast was over the top. The typical meal was about $100+ and I wouldn't be saying anything about the meal prices if the food had been better (it was better than Denny's but not by much). It was about $750 for the two of us to swim with dolphins and get the nice photos they took. In 4 days we spent $1,500 on food and activities (not including room charges). My son had a great time, and I enjoyed my stay only for that reason. They wouldn't even give us Hilton Honors points. We stayed in an upgraded room (supposedly with an ocean view and dolphin view but we had neither. I had stayed here years ago when it was a Hyatt, it was much nicer then. Fraying carpets, scratched furniture, badly needing paint in the room, all point to badly needed remodeling, which seems unlikely in the current economic situation. The staff was friendly, the weather was nice, and my son had a great time, so who can put a price on that. And, Cheap Tickets got us a much better price for our airfare, hotel, and car rental package than anyone else by far. (In fact, the whole package, except for the hotel food and activities, was less than the best airfare, which included a non-stop from SFO to KOA). I would definitely recommend Cheap Tickets. Also, if you want to go to a nice beach or snorkeling, you will need to drive, and plan to make at least most of a day of it.

Great ambiance, bad location, bad food

me Sep 7, 2009

This place is really unique. It is unique in it's good and bad aspects. Size: It is huge, which is good if you want to walk ... around, enjoy the art, the great ocean view, tropical fish in the pond... But it is bad if you do not want to walk 10-15 minutes to the parking, to the restaurant, to the pool etc. Hint: If you ever planning to leave this resort, stay away from Ocean tower. It is located 4 monorail stops from the entrance and even furtherer from the main pool. Pools: They have good pools, which are big, have nice waterfalls and the water slides. I enjoyed it all, but it was very low occupancy period. If the hotel is crowded, good luck getting to the jacuzzi or water slide... Rooms: Rooms are fine for the average hotel, but it's light years away from "ultimate luxury". Gadgets there are totally outdated, the TV was 20'' tube and the fridge froze all our food. Bugs: It might be the problem with any place in tropical climate, but we had bugs in our room. If you have anything sweet left out, you will have tons of tiny bugs come to eat it. I had a headache one night and was about to take a pill of Advil, but last moment just left the pill on th night stand and fell asleep. Next day I found that the sweet cover from the pill was eaten by little bugs, which were totally covering the pill. Food: Almost every time we ordered food there, it was a disaster. The continental breakfast we ordered to the room end up costing over $24 and consisted of coffee and a bucket of gas station quality pastries. Catch of the day ordered in the Laguna grill looked like and tasted like 3 days left overs. Drinks at the cost of $12.50 plus tip were watery. Chinese restaurant food was Ok, but twice more expensive than similar quality place anywhere else. Location: If you like to go out and enjoy Hawaii, not the resort, allocate at least 45 min to an hour to get anywhere. Since there is no good places to eat in the resort. The resort is basically part of the resorts area located in the desert.

The Hilton is a beautiful resort at a beautiful location. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the amount of things to ... do while at the hotel, or around the island about. The only complaints I had were that there is no beach, and the dining options I was disappointed by, especially for breakfast. You either have the cold cereal option by the pool, or the main dining area (a bit expensive for just a few eggs and bacon)--something in between would be great. With so much local fish available (if you travel to any of the towns, it's every where!), the hotel only has one place to eat it, and it's dinner only. The lagoon is a lot of fun, though.

2nd time on the island and thought would try Hilton since I tried the Marriott already and this time I traveled with my 15 ... year old son. My thought was that since Hilton was larger, he might meet more his own age (I was wrong - too many little ones) After some issues checking in including changing rooms, we settled in on the 4th floor of the dolphin lagoon tower. Good - Great view of both dolphins and ocean. Bad - Birds in atrium area kept me up at night and also woke me up every morning at 5am so beware...Ants in the room, but overall it was clean. Best location because we only had to walk a few minutes to registration or to get car; no tram or boat required.Signed up for scuba pool lesson with Ocean Sports and then a dive - loved it. [...], our first instructor was great and my son is ready to get certified. Signed up for another dive a few days later; not quite as good as the first, but dive master was someone else. This is good hotel for those with small children and lots of money since you have to pay for extra for everything. Morning fix of coffee went to hotel next door - saving $3.00 on my latte. Also Hilton charges for use of mask, fins and snorkel to snorkel in dirty lagoon water. We went to Snorkel Bob's and rented from them for a week which cost the same as one day rental at Hilton. Went to the luau, however it was disappointing -same old songs, dance routines and food was so-so. Our table agreed, not worth the money and it appeared as though the dancers were bored. Biggest miss - was a beach on property and you have to go next door to Marriott.Tips: Stay in dolphin lagoon tower to avoid long walks, make a trip to Costco or safeway if in town to stock up on groceries, drinks, water; bring your own snorkel equipment or rent at Snorkel Bob's. If brave, sign up for Manta Ray night dive/snorkel trip with Neptune Charlie - the best ever. Valet will shuttle you next door to Marriott for free use of their beach and snorkel right off the beach. You can eat there as well and price is less for lunch than Hilton. ATV ride was fun at Parker Ranch. To summarize - good fun for families with children up to age 13 who will not miss the beach.

Hilton Waikoloa experience!!!!!

Jawaiian Lover Jul 19, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Fantastic location, great amentities, and best pool ever, your kids will absolutely love it! My one complaint is that the ... staff was very inconsistent. The staff at the pools, stores, dining/restaurant, valet were great. But the consierge service and front desk staff for the most part were not very good. Not helpful at all and definitely needs classes on what customer service is all about. Very abrupt and it is like pulling teeth to get any information. It is too bad to since the consierge and front desk staff is the face of the hotel. Inspite of this I still would recommend the Hilton especially for families with kids. My kids can't wait to go back to the Waikoloa. I would have rated my stay a 5 star experience if it was not for the inconsistency of the overall staff.

Dining at the hotel can be pricey. Explore other options such as quick bites from the Queens Market or Kings Shops. Or you can always take a drive to neighboring areas for great eats!

Blue dragon place, which is about 30 min drive south from the Hotel is the hand down best place to eat. These folks redefine the words "fresh", "great food" and "great service". Really amazing place.

Eat outside of the hotel if you can. Hotel food and service is average but prices are way too high for the actual quality received.

Take the bus (1$ each way) or a 15min walk to the Queen's shop for cheaper and more varied dining, and a great grocery for snacks and drinks.

About a mile from the hotel is a super market, restaurants and shops. There are 2 shopping areas right across the street from each other called Kings and Queens shopping. You can catch a shuttle from either the Marriott or Hilton hotels. It is a dollar each way.

Money savers hint, Short Drive

The Queens marketplace grocery store (owned by ABC stores) in the queens shops is a good place to go when you don't feel like blowing $50 to $100 just for breakfast or lunch for two people. The other restaurants in the Kings and Queens shops weren't too bad from what we tried. Otherwise drive 1/2 hour to Kona for good local restaurants. You will probably end up making this drive 3 or 4 times anyway during your stay.

We bought all our souvenirs in the town of Kailua-Kona, which is about a 25 minute drive from the resort. They had much better selcetion and prices.

One of our favorite restaurants, "Roy's" was just down the street. We drove as we had on high-heels, but very walkable. We ate there three times in the week we were there!

Dining hint, In Hotel

The hotel had several restaurants but they were very expensive. Less than a mile away were some cheaper and more practical restaurants in King's and Queen's shops.

When you fly in, stop by the walmart in Kona to grab some snacks. It really helps defray some of the costs of food at the hotel.
