Hotel in Transition

Frankly, don't visit Costa Rica unless you're open to being taken advantage of. Lets just say - "rich white people...take ... their money" - was the obvious vibe felt by the vast majority (group of 50) - whether on or off-resort. The hotel as of 12/08 was an all-inclusive resort and even though now a Hilton, it still very much fells 'budget' all-inclusive but at a premium price. The food was terrible, the beaches were small, the spa was everything but impressive ... if I visit Costa Rica again, I will be staying at the Four Seasons....MUCH NICER. The Hilton is not worth the money.

The hotel was gorgeous. The road ends up at the hotel and it has it's own beautiful cove. We loved the privacy of the ... bungalows settings. No car are allowed within the hotel, you just have to call a shutlle or walk. The staff was nice and very helpful. Great activities available (kayaking, snorkling, biking, etc). We gad a great time and I could not have dreamt of a better place to be!

Stop at a grocery store in town just before turning down the road to the resort. Pick up snacks, beverages, beer and wine. Resort prices are absurd! (Dinner prices, however, are fair for the decent quality food and good service).

Hilton Lipstick on a Tired, Old Resort
mykel67 Sep 3, 2009
Hilton hastily renovated this old resort last year and their haste is already showing in: cracked walls, peeling paint, ... scratched furniture, mildewed grout. The resort seemed to cater mainly to families on a budget traveling on Hilton points. We paid very little for our stay thanks to a great promotional rate through Orbitz-- otherwise we would have been very upset. The location is terrible-- on a bay that feels more like a lake in cottage country than the Pacific Ocean. The spa pool was a welcome oasis- usually had it all to ourselves as most guests prefered to congregate at the main pool with the bars. Hilton is out to gouge its guests for every penny possible: room service "basket" (one wrap, bag of chips, brownie) $40; least expensive bottle of wine $48; bag of Lays at the gift shop $12; WIFI $15 per day; 20 minute ride to the airport $40; breakfast buffet $20pp; room service 12" pizza- $15 plus $10 delivery charge and 23% fees and taxes; etc. etc. etc. Because of its convenience to the Liberia airport it would be fine for the night before an earlier departure. Otherwise, choose the Marriott, Paradisus or Four Seasons instead (a Hilton employee actually told us those are better resorts!).

Relaxing Place and Very Friendly Staff
Honeymooner Part IV Aug 31, 2009
We were there for 3 days and 2 nights. We thought the place was very well maintained. The staff is incredibly friendly and ... speaks English very well for those Gringos who are afraid they'll have a difficult time getting by. I recommend getting a panoramic ocean view because it's beautiful with sunset and sunrise. We managed to upgrade on our second night to an even better view. It was really worth it. the staff made it all happened without a problem. The only thing is the dining in the hotel can be quite expensive. We did have a $75 food and beverage credit through Orbitz and I hear if you are an HHonors member you might be able to get free breakfast. Who knows. Our breakfast was $50. So from there we decided to look outside for dining. We had breakfast at TCBY in Liberia on the way out of Guanacaste, an amazing breakfast for $20! It was a small but very cozy place. Also, my wife didn't like the fact that the activities in the hotel were too rigid. You couldn't go kayaking whenever, it had to be during the scheduled time. The salsa lessons were also too short.

Papagayo Steakhouse and Seafood - there are 3 restaurants right next to each other in Playa del Coco. They share the menus and I guess a kitchen. Try the Filet Mignon with the mushroom sauce and the garlic shrimp dish my wife went crazy for. It is amazing! Btw, they actually give you two filet mignon! Ask for [...] from Cartago, he's a cool guy.

The hotel was very nice...the workers were extremely friendly...On the other hand, it was too secluded...And, there needs to ... be more variety of food. And, oh, the sale tax...Wow! the resort is in an isolated location, about 30 minutes from the airport. the nearest village is about 15 minutes away. a taxi to the nearest town of any size is approximately $40. meals at the resort, while delicious were pricey. portions were not american size. $40 for a breakfast of oatmeal for 2 was a bit much. plan at least one trip into town to purchase snacks if you're on a limited budget. tours are a must!

Great hotel! Excellent bar and bartender. Beautiful rooms and pools! My advice is rent a car. Taxi's are $$$ and the food at ... the hotel is as well. car rental is $45/day and well worth it! Also, book activities thru other places than the resort. The resort is ridiculously expensive on everything. The restaurant called El Dorado is very good at the hotel. The other is basic and not so good.

Hilton Papagayo
adventurer May 27, 2009
We took a riverboat tour to see the crocodiles and white faced monkeys that was spectacular. We enjoyed an adventure that ... included a zip-line tour in the Palo Verde forest with a horseback ride to the water falls and a natural thermal mudbath and mineral spring bath. The hotel itself was lovely on a beach with a beautiful view of the bay at Papagayo. The rooms were marble with granite bathroom countertops. Very clean and quiet. The staff was extremely kind and attentive. The restuarants were excellent but the menus could be a bit more diverse as we got a little bored with the food on a fourteen night stay. The pool area was nice and the beach was beautiful.

Tour services offers several excursions. We enjoyed the mega combo, which is 10 zip lines, water slide, horseback riding and ... hot springs/mud bath! We also took the Nicaragua tour. It was a very long day but very interesting. The staff at the hotel is very attentive and guest services will help with anything you may need. We like to try the local foods when we travel and were disappointed at the availability of dining in the area. You do have to travel a distance but there is food available, you just have to find it!
