Grant Plaza a nice stay in San Francisco
citywalker Nov 9, 2009
This hotel in Chinatown is very convenient to everything, even if you don't want to walk the hills. There is plenty to do and ... see nearby. The lively daytime neighborhood is fairly quiet at night and the hotel was very quiet and restful. There is a gorgeous stained glass skylight on the top floor, and big stained glass windows too.

Several times I asked for information and the response was " I do not have time to help you right now". The bedding is old ... and needs to be upgraded, carpets cleaned and tile grout in bathrooms thoroughly scrubbed. Does not have key business channels for viewing You have to request an iron/ironing board. The ironing board is miniature. Floors squeak when you walk on them and you can hear everything going on in other rooms.

There are masses of Chinese restaurants within walking distance, open late, and yummy, cheap, authentic food.
--Megan, Milwaukee, Wi Aug 23, 2009
There are alot of activities within a short walk or easy access to public transportation in just 1 to 4 blocks. The bad news, most of the public transportation stops running between midnight and 1am. So if you like staying out to the wee hours, that means a taxi back to the hotel. There is NO nightlife within walking distance.

Good Purposeful Hotel
Chaser Oct 12, 2009
The Hotel served its purpose. We weren't in the room very much because we were out doing things in San Francisco. However, ... the room was a little smaller than we were expecting. But the only issue I had was that we booked a room w/ a full size bed and were given two twins. The hotel has a really good location, and the staff was friendly and helpful.

If all you want is a place to sleep, close to pretty much everything, than this is for you. Totally no frills or extras, ... kind of noisey, lousy elevator service. On the positive side, it was reasonably priced, close to walking distance or public transportation, and we had no problems or safety concerns.

room to small, no ac, water leak ceiling
roger Aug 31, 2009
When we arrive in san francisco to visit the sights and hiking the muir woods national park, the day of the arrival was ... extremely hot weather. Staff was friendly but when we arrive in the room, we were surprise that the room is very small and no ac or fan. Although the location is great and the outside appearance of the hotel is nice, the rooms are not so great. On our second nite the biggest problem we had was the ceiling of the room started leaking water. It would be nice if the room have at least fan and small refrigerator to keep bottle water cool. So far this is the worst hotel ive stayed in.

Amazing value for a 2-star hotel
M Aug 29, 2009
Before I say anything, let me remind you this is a 2-star hotel. Everything was amazing considering their rating and ... price. I have stayed at 2 or 3-star hotels before, and sometimes I was annoyed and irritated by fellow guests who make so much noise; motorcycles blasting engines right outside the window in the parking lot; people running around in the hallways, etc.. The hotels themselvers are always fine. I read many reviews about this hotel before I visited SFO ranging from extremely good to downright horrible. I'm very noise-sensitive, but other than that I can tolerate pretty much everythin else. And I DID have a pleasant stay at this hotel. Cars run right outside your window till around 12:00am and you hear the sound. The woman who was staying right nextdoor told me it kept her awake, but for me it was not a disturbing kind of noise. I slept through it. My room WAS small, but who cares? I read many reviews saying bathrooms ( and everything else ) need repair, and I agree this place will look amazing if it goes through complete renovation, but then they couldn't offer this price anymore, right? My room was kept clean to the best of their ability. The staff were very nice and helpful. Since my arrival was around 11:00pm, I was traveling alone and not that familiar with SFO, I asked for advice as to whether or not I should take the BART. I got a reply E-mail right away with many other suggestions. The only thing is that this hotel has a very interesting smell. Is it the mixture of carpet-cleaner and all-purpose body-and-hair wash in the bathroom and some Asian herbs?????? It looks like it is pretty safe to use the BART even late at night to get to this hotel. If you have late arrival and are unfamiliar with this city, I would suggest getting off the BART at Powell, rather than Mongomery which actually is closer. From Powell Station you only walk through busy arears to get there, and you would not wonder into some dark back alleys by mistake. The most magnificent-looking Ritz Carlton is just one block away. It is a good location. Lastly, most reviewers criticizing this hotel seem to have expected the same quality as Hyatt Regency or Sheraton or Westin. You have to pay the Hyatt rate for that. Don't listen to them.

Dad and Son road trip Jul 2, 2009
Excellent staff, very friendly and reasonably priced. Accomodations are adaquate but small, which is not uncommon in a large ... city. However, very good location to street cars, shopping, dining and transportation to anywhere you would want to go. The worst part was a lot of street noise between 10pm and midnight with garbage pick-up, etc. Most restaurants and other activities in Chinatown close at 9 or 9:30pm. After that, it is rather dead and will need to go to another part of town for any nightlife.

Fabulous Location for a Fabulous Price

I stayed here for one night when I was doing a quick overnight in San Francisco. I've been to the city before but I'd never ... stayed in the Chinatown/Financial District before. The room while small was clean and had all the amenities that as a single vacationer I could need. The bed was comfortable and the shower had great water pressure.

Problem smell with sewer system or bird contamination. Had to use fan to get clean air in. I got sick with Flu. Noise problem ... with people staying there. Possible criminal activity or prostitution going on. A lot of screaming and running around every night. The walls are paper thin and you can hear a whisper in any direction. If you want Westin St. Francis amenities, you are going to have to pay Westin St. Francis prices. If you want a decent room ... in an amazing location for an unbeatable price, *this* is your hotel. Its an old building, don't expect shiny and new. Even with having to pay for parking, it is as cheap and nicer and in a much better location than where we stayed previously to be in walking distance to Union Square. I'll definitely be returning. When we were there we had a double bed in a tiny room on the second floor. The heat was provided by a radiator that was on, but easy to turn off. We realized there was a problem with the toilet in our room and called the front desk. We were upgraded to a queen sized room that was much bigger and a bit nicer on the 6th floor. The staff was nice and we received a coupon from the hotel to use on our next trip. I'll certainly book here next time I am in San Francisco.

Not a good stay
Lori Aug 6, 2008
I was very disappointed with our stay at the Grand Plaza Hotel. When we checked in the lobby had a strong odor. We were ... told at the front desk that we needed to pay $25 for overnight parking. The parking lot was a few blocks away from the hotel, which was a hassle. The room was tiny to say the least. The peep whole in the door had a piece of tissue sticking through it, because there was no glass in the whole. There was a piece of hair on the pillow case. There was hardly no room to put our luggage anywhere due to the size of the room. The end of the bed literally almost touched the dresser in front of it.

Location
Tom Jun 19, 2008
The location of this hotel is probably the number 1 feature of this old, but quaint hotel located just inside the gate of ... Chinatown. It is very quiet at night. I was a little dissapointed at the location within the hotel of my room as I was maybe given the last available room from what I understand....however being located on the inner part, again I will say the room was incredibly quiet at night. The rooms are smallish and there aren't many options on the small televisions (my remote wasn't fully functional either). The location is outstanding in reference to many SF locations as it is an easy (if you don't mind hills) stroll to all forms of transit, Financial District (& shopping), North Beach, Chinatown and more.

If you are looking for a hotel that is next to the major sights of San Francisco that is cheap, this is a great hotel. It ... tends to be a bit loud. You can hear tvs from other rooms. I would not recomend this hotel for families. It's a better hotel for people wanting a place to crash that is cheap and close to everything.

Affordable for single traveler
Ryan Feb 18, 2008
I found the Grant Plaza Hotel to be reasonable for younger guys traveling on their own. I often take trips by myself and all ... I really need is a place to sleep and a shower, so I have a hard time spending a lot of money on a hotel (I'd rather save it for good food or attractions). To be honest, I hardly spend any time in hotel rooms when I travel - I leave in the morning, come back late at night and most times don't even turn on the TV. The Grant Plaza Hotel was located near Chinatown and they offered parking validation at a nearby parking garage for $20/day. I had a car with me on this trip, so I can't comment on how convenient it was in terms of mass transit. The room (twin) was fairly small, but I'm used to staying in business hotels in Japan, which are much, much smaller, so it didn't bother me. There were not enough power outlets to charge my laptop, cell phone, GPS and ipod all at once, but I had the same problem at of the nicer hotels that I've stayed at. I traveled during February, so I didn't notice if the room had air conditioning. It did appear to have a working heater, but I didn't need to use it. The staff was friendly and helpful when I asked for directions. As far as convenience stores, there was a 7-11 a couple of blocks away (about a 5-7 minute walking distance), but there was no fridge in the room to keep things cold. Other than that, hardly any stores were open late at night. There was a French restaurant and a Wine bar down the street that appeared to be good, but I wasn't able to try it on this trip. There was also a decent Japanese restaurant right across the street from the hotel. If your travel style is similar to mine (always on the go), I think this hotel is reasonable, since it is relatively cheap.
