The Hyatt Regency really has everything you need to enjoy a week-long vacation without ever leaving the restort. Of course ... you should check out the rest of Kauai, but it is great having everything you want to do right at one place. From lounging in a hammock, taking a dip in the salt water pool, sliding down into the fresh water pool, watching the sunset from the lobby with live music and a Pina Colada, or taking a stroll right on the beach and watching the surfers. What is there not to love?

There is a great little shopping center a 3 minute drive away that has some fantastic restaurants, including Roy's and a little hole-in-the-wall place called Tropical Burgers (or something to that effect) that makes an amazing breakfast (waffles and macadamia nut banana pancakes to die for).

The paradise made in Hawaii
guillaumep Sep 28, 2009
This is a great resort, with a splendid ocean view. In just a few hours, one can feel at home (but a pretty nice one). The ... ocean is not very safe to swim in (at least during our stay at the beginning of September). But, it does not really matter as the pools are the nicest we have ever seen. There is even a waterslide, which is fun. The staff is excellent, very friendly and helpful. The cockatoos are a great attraction near the lobby. As in all the hotels we stayed at in Hawaii, the internet connection is pricey. Nevertheless, it is easy to use the Wifi connection, anywhere in the hotel. Tidespool is a great restaurant (even though a little bit expensive).

Be sure to rent a car at the airport (hotel selection is limited and pricier), and make the trip to the north side of the ... island. The beaches were fantastic and the entire area is a lot of fun. Many more opportunities for shopping and dining. The food is hit or miss: either perfect or awful - no in between. I called the hotel several times to ensure our room preference and of course when we arrived it was completely wrong. Our room had one tiny table and no desk. What really go to me was the packet coffee machine that dispensed into a paper cup. Paper cups in a 5 star hotel? The grounds are breathtaking, just gorgeous. The pools, both fresh and saltwater are a lot of fun.

Great hotel, loved the swim lagoon, beautiful beach but could not swim due to red flags the entire time, had to swim up on ... North shore. They charge for internet, computer usage in business center, and food is ridiculously expensive there - we ate in town for every meal except the free breakfast buffet we got included in our package (normally 26$/person!) But beautiful hotel, loved our room, view, staff, etc. Good entertainment on Seaview Terrace. Probably would have skipped the Luau - very pricey, food was just OK, entertainment was cheesy.

This is a gorgeous property with spectacular ocean views(almost all the rooms have ocean views). Sadly, the ocean is not very ... safe to swim in -- the waters are very rough and have coral in them. But the pools are the nicest I've ever seen with something for everyone. The only thing is that the food/drinks are pricey at the hotel. Also, they do NOT have free internet access/wi-fi -- it comes at a daily/hourly charge. The staff is excellent and incredibly friendly.

Don't Fear the Garden View
NSL Sep 16, 2009
We were initially aprehensive about booking a "garden view" room at the Hyatt (who wants to spend hundreds of dollars per ... night to look at a parking lot or the rooms across the courtyard?), but we went ahead and did it because the special price we found on cheaptickets was too good to pass up. As it turned out, we were not at all disappointed with the view... Our ground-floor room actually had a view of the impressively landscaped grounds, with the only privacy encroachment being a rarely used path about 20 yards off our back porch (compare this to the pricier pool-view rooms where there are lounge chairs just outside your window). To be fair, the rooms higher up in our wing likely did have a view of the parking lot (but also a better view of the landscaping and the mountains). The room was generously sized--we had a king and a queen and a chair with ottoman. The major downer on the room was the A/C, which did not seem capable of cooling the room to much below the outside tropical temperature. The Hyatt pools and lagoon are awesome, and stay open 24 hours. This is definitely the place to stay if you want a resort experience on Kauai and/or are less interested in hiking and scuba diving and all of the other stuff to see and do on the island. If you just want to relax by a pool in a beautifully landscaped environment, stay here. We actually did leave the hotel to explore the island every day, and even for us, coming back to the pool in the afternoon was nice enough to make staying here worth the price. The beach next to the hotel(Shipwreck) is nice and sandy too, but the surf, at least when we were there, was so strong that swimming in the ocean was either impossible or seriously frightening, depending on the day. Our biggest disappointment at the Hyatt (besides the underperforming A/C) was the food. Donderos is supposed to be one of the best Italian restaurants on the island, but we were not impressed. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is almost commically cheesey--think imitation faux-roman decorative art everywhere and blaring opera on an endless loop--and the decor is badly in need of updating. The ventalation system dripped on my wife several times during our dinner. I would definitely not eat at this place unless you can get a table outside, and even then, the food was expensive (around $130 for two without alcohol) and not particularly tasty. The bar (Stevenson's Library) has a much better atmosphere, but the prices are astronomical, even for a resort. Prices for Sushi are around 400% of the going rate in California. They also have an extensive selection of cocktails starting at $15 each. The patio dining place ("The Dock") was more reasonable and the service was good, but the offerings don't go beyond basic bar food. All in all, our most impressive and reasonably priced (relative to service and selection) meal at this hotel was room service, which is available 24/7. I'm told that Tidepools is a decent restaurant and is not outrageously overpriced, but it was closed for refurbishing during our visit. All in all, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is going to make use of the pools and other resort amenities. It is a very nice hotel and definitely worth the premium over other hotels on the south shore, especially if you can get a room at a discount from the standard rate. The food was a serious disappointment though. Inflated prices are to be expected at a resort on an island, but given the alternatives in the vacinity, the Hyatt's prices were severely inflated and the selection and quality was not good enough to make up for it.
Traveler type: Couples
Keoke's Paradise in the Kiahuna Shopping Center about two miles down the road from the Hyatt. Relatively decent prices, good service, good food. The atmosphere is phony, but sort of fun. I'd suggest an earlier dinner--seems like it gets busy after 7 or so.

Disappointed Sep 7, 2009
Compared to stays at other Hyatt resort locations, the stay was mediocre. The service in their "5 star" restaurant left ... something to be desired. . .they booked reservations for us, and when calling the restaurant back we received a message they were closed. Hyatt would not honor Passport / discounts b/c it was booked through a "3rd party", however, when booked through other 3rd parties (sites, travel agencies, etc.) staying at other Hyatt locations this was not an issue. . . Despite how the site advertised, it was a fend for yourself for getting to/from the airport, to excursions, etc...forcing a car rental that hadn't been planned based on prior experience. The staff itself was friendly and courteous. . .

(our flight was delayed) Difficult to find at night due to Kauai's lack of street lights and small confusing street signs. ... However, staff gave a warm welcome. Discounted upgrade to ocean-view room was a treat; we really enjoyed waking up to this paradise view. Late night dinner accommodations(room service, restaurants)were very helpful. Prime location to nearby shops, activities, restaurants, airport, etc. This resort provided ample top-notch activity options compared to other places that we've been[many beautiful outdoor pools to choose from(open 24hrs, jacuzzi, volleyball/basketball in pool), tennis courts, bike rentals, fitness center, spa with indoor pool, multiple good restaurants(open till 9-10pm, good food (not quite excellent in taste for the price...though, I am a picky eater)], gorgeous golf course(with ocean/mountain views, Tiger Woods played here), etc..] We actually need more time to use the facility to the fullest. The concierge service and valet parking staff were of great help as well. We are expecting our first child and haven't had a vacation in a while; this resort provided a wonderful, relaxing experience. Would definitely stay here again. This is our favorite island...

Best built resort we have ever seen
Hawaii Honeymooners Aug 15, 2009
This is an absolutely beautiful and well-planned resort. The pools are amazing and the best we've ever seen at a hotel. We ... are usually beach people but found ourselves sticking around the pool with the comfortable padded lounge chairs and relaxing 'lazy river' that connects the pools together. All the restaurants were great and all had INCREDIBLE views of the ocean or were built into lava waterfalls and lush landscape. The Seaview Terrace is an amazing spot overlooking the whole bay where we enjoyed cocktails almost every night. The staff were all very friendly and the concierge service was excellent. My husband spent time golfing and was very impressed with the course and staff over there as well. Our only complaint is that some of the restaurant prices are very high (even more so than most resorts), especially the restaurant Tidepools. Also, drink prices are completely outrageous. Beer is $8 and most mixed drinks are $13. We found this really frustrating and understand that drink prices are usually high at hotels but this was the highest we've ever seen, even on Hawaii. Although there isn't a way to avoid this during the day if you want a beverage by the pool, we got around this by a '5 at 5:00' special with $5 drinks at Seaview Terrace and a '6 at 6:00' special with $6 drinks at the other bar, Stevenson's.

Although the resort is top notch (I think the best on the island, even better than Princeville), be sure to get out and experience the adventures available.

Lots of great restaurants around the island

The Luau is top notch! While the setting does not compare to the best in Maui, the food and entertainment were top notch. I highly recommend participating! The hotel signature restaurants are first class as well!
