Relaxing Vacation

My wife and I spent most of our time relaxing on the beach and ate mostly at the Bar and Grill Our room was very small..there ... was no iron and ironing board nor a coffee maker which most 3..4 star hotels provide. Nevertheless we made do for the 11 days we were there.

Gran Ventana needs an overhaul as does the Playa Dorado golf course! The booze is terrible, thge food marginally better ... overall however, their exists a flash of epicurean brilliance within the Italian restaurant. The grouper I had was divine!

Well kept rooms and grounds. The food was good (better than I had expected) - particularly liked the ala carte restaurants. ... Pool and beach are very well maintained. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Even the evening entertainment was better than I had anticipated. Would definitely recommend it to friends.

great trip!!

the food was wonderful. there is definitely something for everyone. both the buffet and reservation dinners were excellent. i ... would definitely recommend getting to know the staff. we did and they were all so in tune with our needs. i felt like a princess, as humorous as that sounds. the recreation group was hysterical. the shows at night were ok, but definitely amusing and something to do. there are places to dance right outside the resort as well(but within the security of the playa dorada complex). the security in the whole playa dorada complex was top notch, as well as within the gran ventana. we did travel into the city one day and found it very poor and would only recommend the more touristy places...the brugal rum factory and the sugar mills. overall great resort if you're looking for some r&r and great food/drinks!!! o yes and i mentioned the beds earlier...they could just be updated a bit. they were comfortable but could be better. we would recommend the gran ventana to friends and family. also one tip is i would definitely recommend flying directly into Puerto Plata Airport. the 15 min ride beats 2 hours+ from santiago.

This resort was ok. Nothing extraordinary about it. Best for families with children. When we visited it was full of british ... travelers, at least 90%. As other reviewers reported, the other guests would get up early and take most available lawn chairs both by the pools and at the beach. Overall the food at this resort was bland and mediocre. The food at the italian restaurant was the most flavorful- wish we had discovered it earlier. Service was excellent everywhere. The children at the resort had a great time. The animation team had them put on shows and learn dances, which they loved. It was fun to watch the kids, but all the entertainment in the evening had to be family-friendly, which can get a little boring. There is no casino or disco on site- you have to walk or taxi over to it which we never did. The best part of the resort for us was the beach. Playa Dorada is beautiful, peaceful and clean. We took the Camaran snorkeling day trip and really enjoyed ourselves. Also, we hired a taxi and guide to take us to the Puerto Plata teleferico which was amazing.

We came to relax for a week so we only took one trip outside the hotel to Puerto Plata. We took a tour of the town of Puerto ... Plata, a cigar factory, a rum factory and a trip on the cable car. It gave us a bit of history of the area. It was very enjoyable. The remainder of the time we spent on the beach during the day, sailing, kayaking, swimming, etc. and in the evnings enjoyed the daily entertainment, fine dining and cool breezes near the beach. It was our first trip to the Dominican Republic. The local people we met were extremely helpful and friendly. In particular [...], the hotel staff that showed themselves to be exceptional hosts during our visit and went "above and beyond" to serve us.We are going back next year for a longer stay.
