Nice hotel- avoid the time share reps
ny traveler Sep 23, 2009
The room was very nice, marble floors, nice decor, very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. 2 pools but one is for ... their VIPs. Good location, the bus stops right in front of the hotel. BUT, I do not like the check-in procedure. As soon as you check in you are directed to what you think is an information desk but winds up being a time share sales desk. They hold on to your keys so you can't just walk away or go straight to your room. Made the stupid and HUGE mistake of agreeing to sit through their 90 min. presentation in exchange for some discounted tickets. Bad idea, the whole thing just turned me off to an otherwise nice hotel.

I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel accommodations and the level of services are as nice as the ones in Cabos San ... Lucas. I heard Cancun being an "American town" with noisy crowds, but turned out to be not true. The upgrade to an ocean view definitely worth every penny! Everyone got to try the "Gran Melia" and "Mango Magaritas" :)

I have no major complaints except that the ceiling started to leak! Fortunately it happened on our last night's stay. Also, I ... would not recommend this hotel if you're not used to walking long distances! From the bus stop to the hotel is a distance, PLUS you would have to take a long flight of stairs to get to the lobby! Can be very exhausting

If you did not do the "all-inclusive" there are two shopping malls that are close by and paying the $7.50 pesos for the bus fare, you have a decent selection of restaurants for reasonable prices

My sister and I decided to take a girls trip to Cancun. We are 20-somethings and wanted a place that was relaxing and not too ... hectic. The hotel itself is beautiful, and pretty grand. We had a room with a lagoon view. The room itself was very nice, with a spacious bathroom and a sitting area and a balcony. It was also very clean. We had our toiletries all over the bathroom counter the first day, and housekeeping organimzed it for us. They also have a night turn down services which was great for when we needed towels, they removed all the decorative pillows from the bed. The pool was great, very big and has a swim up bar, there are also two hot tubs. The only downside was it closes at 8 pm which didn't work so well when we had gone on a day trip and wanted to relax in it that evening. The beach was great. There were some rocky areas but these were clearly marked with a red flag. On all of the 3 days there, the flag was yellow, but we were still able to swim. There were also plenty of beach chairs. The location of the hotel worked well for us because we didn't want to be too close to the clubs. We were close enough by bus to the La Isla mall, quite a few nice restaurants, etc. My only gripe was the stairs leading up to the hotel. If you take the bus, you will have to go up these stairs, it wasn't too bad when it was cool, but in the middle of the afternoon it wasn't fun. We also had a room on the main floor close and could hear other guests walking pass the corridor in the morning. But these points won't keep me from staying here again.

The Gran Melia did NOT disappoint!
The San Diego Duo Travelers Aug 13, 2009
Usually when I look at the pictures of hotels online, I take it with a grain of salt...but sure enough, all the pictures of ... the Gran Melia were accurate! On our first day we checked in, put our bags in the room, and went downstairs to the pool/beach area and our breaths were taken away at the BEAUTIFUL color of the ocean...and we were very happy to see a non-crowded swim-up bar. We didn't get the all-inclusive as we were unsure about the quality of the food and we were planning on doing a couple all-day tours...but the next time we stay at the Gran Melia (and we definitely will!), we plan on going with all-inclusive. The food at the hotel was great (somewhat expensive, but good). Based on other reviews I read, we were on the defense about being hounded by timeshare people at the hotel, but lo and behold, we never got asked once the entire time we were there! This was a major plus in our books... There is a bus stop right in front of the hotel, so traveling via bus was easy and convenient. Regardless of what brought you to Cancun, you must see Chichen Itza...it's amazing! We also ate some delicious street tacos near all the bars in the party area at a place called The Taco Factory. Captain's Cove down the street also had yummy seafood and played awesome music the entire time we were eating. It was our first time in Cancun and staying at the Gran Melia, but it definitely will not be the last! We had a great time in Cancun!

My girlfriend and I went down for a 4-day trip and were very impressed with everything about the hotel. The rooms were great, ... and the staff recleaned and restocked everything multiple tmes a day, something we had never experienced before. The concierge workers, especially [...], were very helpful and gave useful tips and suggestions for shopping and activities in the area. The location was great, right on the beach and across the street from AquaWorld, where we did most of the activities throughout the trip. Getting a taxi took all of about one minute, they were always on site, which made things very quick and easy. Despite most guests trekking in half the beach with them, this was still the cleanest place I've ever stayed. We ordered room service once, and were told the food would take from 25 to 30 minutes, and it arrived within 15. They came back later to remove the dishes. We didn't have cash at the time, so they offered to leave the food and come back later to get the money; very trustworthy environment. Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay, and if we go to Cancun in the future, we'll definitely be going back to this hotel.

Don't pay for a shuttle service that offers to take you from the airport and around the area and back. Take a taxi to and from the airport, and ride the local bus around. We paid $65 for the shuttle and only used it from the airport to the hotel. It was disorganized and took lots of extra time. The regular city buses run up and down the hotel zone and downtown areas, and it only costs about $1 to ride. Also, if you want to leave the hotel on the shuttle service, you have to call early and schedule it. NO fun! We could have saved some time and about $30 by not booking the shuttle service.

Convert your money before you leave the states if you don't the exchange will be much less in mexico. walmart is located in ... down town cancun and they have a good exchange rate if buying items with USD ($12.87 I think). FOR YOUR SAFETY...DO NOT DRIVE to downtown Cancun if this is your first time in MEXICO just stay on the hotel strip. The Taxi's are expensive for Americans, because Mexicans think we're all rich (example: took taxi from hotel to end of hotel strip and it cost $30 USD). TONS of lying sales people will approach you wanting to tell you a bunch of BS about their hotel for 90mins and try to get you to buy a Timeshare package, don't waste your time! They will tell you you'll get a gift at the end for your time, but its not what they promised. This happened to other americans while we were there including us. Plan a day to Xel-Ha, it is wonderful!!! We will never stay at the Gran Melia again, but will consider staying at the Royal which is a 5 diamond hotel and all inclusive. We visited there and found it to be VERY VERY nice and the food isn't bad compared to the Gran Melia.

Our Stay in Cancun
Ms Sheila B Jun 15, 2009
I will start by saying that this hotel is quite lovely, the location is right on the beach and the rooms are beautiful. The ... pool was large and sprawling so there was no crowding, no matter how many people were playing and the pool bar was a fun touch. I had a massage in the spa and it was a wonderful experience. The cleaning staff are not intrusive yet they maintain the cleanliness of the rooms wonderfully well. The hotel is so large though that it can be confusing, there is no air conditioning inside the hotel public areas so it's muggy in the lobby and it's hard to find your way around. The attitude of the staff is that you shouldn't have any need to leave the hotel which is NOT the way we travel. When asked about a restaurant outside the hotel the front desk staff seemed confused that we'd asked about a place outside their domain. We didn't bother to ask about local sights. The one notable exception was a young man named [...] who was one of the hotel concierge staff. The "security" staff had an almost gestapo like paranoia regarding our comings and goings. That was interesting. This is a "time share" type of hotel so be prepared to hear their spiel. They did offer cool gifts (we snorkled the reef on their dime) for listening but the pressure was intense and they got a little personal when it became obvious that "no" meant no. I had a real desire to tell the little man trying to get us to buy that the reason we'd agreed to "waste his time" was because he was offering free stuff. While I would recommend this hotel on the rooms, the pool and the beach be aware that they are sure that they are an island unto themselves and look elsewhere for any information on restaurants other than the ones in the hotel. The price for the hotel stay was reasonable and the times we did eat in the hotel restaurants the food was good and the prices were reasonable. They do not offer a free breakfast, coffee in the lobby or anything of that sort unless you are an owner or a member of their group, nor do they make what is available very clear to their paying customers. There are buses available every few minutes along the main road in front of the hotel for quick and cheap transportation around Cancun so don't take a taxi. The buses are clean and while the drivers are somewhat fearless, I can highly recommend using them as your main mode of transport while in Cancun. I would recommend this hotel but with the caveat that you be a smart consumer.
