the only thing missing was the pool bar was closed. they were replacing broken tiles in the pool and it was on the bar ... side. what a disappointment. but we had a wonderful time in spite of that. the bar was opening the day we left. I have been there before and looking forward to going there again. Going at off season time there are not many people there. They do get a lot of people doing a long weekend Friday to Monday.

We always have a wonderful time at this resort, we've visited over 10 times! The resort is set up so people can strike up ... conversations easily in smaller groups than at the mega resorts. The staff are all friendly and have become family to us. We had a very good meal at the Veranda restaurant and are always able to find something to eat, I love the breakfasts. We typically eat diner in town which is just a $5 cab ride. The rooms are spacious and clean and the balcony views are spectacular! Everyone we bring with us comes back, we've grown to a group of 20 at times.

Nice place

Wish I woulda waited Sep 21, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

It was a nice hotel, probably very fun during busy season. I went in the off season so it wasn't very busy. Because it wasn't ... busy they didn't offer half of the amenities that I read about. There wasn't enough people for a buffet so there wasn't always food available. They were remodeling half the hotel and pool, so it was a little noisey. The food was ok, there weren't very many dishes to chose from. Over all it was ok, I wish I would have waited to go during season.

Everything you need to know

jrj013 Sep 10, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

My husband and I stayed at the El Cozumeleno in September for 7 nights. We had a wonderful time. We went during the slow ... season so keep that in mind when reading this review. Only 18% of the resort was occupied. You should visit Cozumel even if you don't choose this hotel...the island is gorgeous!! SERVICE: Awesomel!!! The staff was wonderful..we didn't run into one rude or unfriendly employee. We got specialized attention from the staff because there were only 36 rooms ocuppied. The entire staff especially in the restaurant really made us feel like Kings!! FOOD: Average. The buffets got very repeatative. Breakfast was fine. Lunch you can order off of a menu, but dinner is bad. They try to make american food, but fail miserably. The mexican food is good but other than that the buffet is not that good. The inside restaurant on the other hand is wonderful. They change the menu at least every other day. We ate here every night for dinner. Just keep in mind that they have there own mexican twist on the food. ROOM: Below average. The bed was hard. The sheets had small stains/holes in them. The bathroom only has a shower no bathtub. The towels were rough. There was plenty of hot water. The balcony and the view were amazing!!! LOCATION: Amazing!! This is the second to last hotel on the north end on the island. If you like to snorkel this is the place for you. They have the best snorkeling right in front of the hotel!! We snorkeled everyday. The beach was beautiful!!! This was the best part of the hotel. We got a great deal and felt like we got more than we paid for. If you want the Ritz...don't stay here. If you want a beautiful place to relax, I highly recommend the El Cozumeleno. If you have any questions feel free to contact me!!!

after 9 stays

A disappointed couple Aug 25, 2009

we stayed there every year since 2001 and this was the worsed of all. The staff used to be much more attentive. This time it ... took a while to get service. The back bar was completly closed which meant for every drink we had to walk all the way to the other end to get one. The years before a waiter came around on the beach and brought drinks or it was a short walk from the beach area to the bar. They also closed the restaurant for a private party for 3 days. The buffet isn't all that great but we didn't have any other options since the room service was bad this year too. We used to enjoy our stay. Not so much this time. We thank [...] though. They've been there for years and know what service means.

Cant complain about anything

Brando Aug 21, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

This hotel had the best view of any hotel I have stayed at. I always request an ocean view, and I always get shafted and get ... stuck looking inland. Here I had no problem getting an ocean view and it was great! The room was clean and some other people complained about the beds being hard, but I slept like a rock. They will not win any awards for their food, but it was not bad for buffet food. If you order off of the menu it is better and comes out quickly. A few waiters serve the pool area but you are better off to just get up walk or swim to the pool bar. If you grab a chair on the beach then you have no choice but to get up and go to the bar. I didn't mind. The beach is not as pristine and sandy as they make it look in the photos, but it is still nicer than some (more expensive) I have stayed at. There are a lot of shells and large rocks with a few sandy areas to enter the water. The ocean swimming is great, just watch your step. The snorkeling from the beach is great and the gear is included in the package, just go to the dive shop and check it out. There are a lot of fish swimming around the hotel area. We booked our dives through the dive shop right at the hotel and the whole experience was great. We departed and returned right to the pier at the resort. Para sailing is a little pricey for the 10 or 15 minutes you are up there, but it was worth it for us having never done it before. I have mixed comments on the pool. We woke up early every morning and there are lots of guys cleaning the grounds and treating the pool. Despite what appears to be a thorough cleaning every morning, the bottom of the pool was a little slippery...I wouldn't call it "slimy" but it is close. The water seems very clear and clean, its just the bottom was slippery. It looked VERY clean...spotless. I will say that there is a nice mix of shade and sun on the pool so you can get out of the sun when you are sunburned like me. The swim up bar is pretty cool and I met some great people there. I would have to find a great deal to stay somewhere else. I will probably stay here again.

Overall a great hotel and wonderful staff! Overall it was a great experience and very relaxing. The buffet food was so-so, ... but that's to be expected at any all-inclusive hotel that you would stay at. I highly recommend eating at the inside restaurant for dinner at least a few nights as the food was great. I highly recommend the made-to-order breakfast omletes and the made-to-order fajitas at lunch in the buffet area, both are outstanding.

Fantastic family getaway

Cams mom Aug 16, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

I went to Cozumel for fun and relaxation with my 15 year old son. We had a wonderful time. We did the ATV adventure: lots of ... fun and adventure, however, transportation there is part of package. You need to pay for taxi back, about $12. That evening we went on the Fury Catamaran 2 snorkel and beach party. The sailing, free drinks, and private beach party were great. The snorkeling at the reefs was not impressive. Better snorkeling experience at the hotel. The parasailing was an awesome experience. We sailed together, the price was the same for both $55ea and still the amount of time -10min. It would have been nice to have a cheaper price or longer time. Therefore, I would sail solo to get more for the buck. The food and service at the Cocal restaurant was good. I think better protection from the birds hovering over the food at the buffet area could be used. However, you can always order from the menu if you want. The Veranda restaurant was spectacular. The food, service, and entertainment was first class...make reservations. I think having water volleyball and basketball games would bring more interaction amongst visitors.

Excellent resort , very reasonable price

The staff were very helpful and friendly. The resort allows you to borrow snorkeling equipment for free, and has daily scuba ... introductory lesson. All meals and drinks are included in the cost, and there is a fine dining restaurant on premises that you need to make reservations for each day you want to dine there (price is included). We always look for a queit and clean place, and we were quite happy at this hotel. Our stay there was very comfortable. There were some nights with music and dancing, but if you are looking for a place with an all night party atmosphere, this one is not for you.

We went on the Fury Catamaran, what a great time we had, Punta Sur was a dissapointment. Very beautiful time riding around on ... the other side of the Island. I felt safe the entire time downtime when I was without my spouse , because I had to go shopping. he went fishing the people at the hotel helped him with that and he caught his 4 fish!

Nice Place, BUT...

JB Aug 10, 2009

Overall, the facilities were nice - The rooms were spotless and had an excellent view of the pool, beach and ocean and the ... A/C worked great. The beach cabanas and lounge chairs were great for spending the day on the beach in or out of the sun. However, we stayed for a week, and I felt that was a bit long. The food and drinks were not very creative or flavorful and got old after 4 to 5 days. The bar that was closest to the beach was closed all week and the beach drink service was spotty. The pools were nice, but bathtub-warm and in severe need of tile work and better filtration. The covered pool was drained and closed on our 3rd day for some work, so maybe they were addressing the problem. The food was edible but not much more - everything was over-cooked and dry - even the hot dogs. The fajita grill was the best thing out there since they are cooked fresh to order. The inside dinner restaurant was nice and the service was execellent, but once again, the food was just mediocre. If you are a diver, this is not the place to stay... Since it is at the north end of the island, it is a $10-$15 cab ride each way to get to a dive shop and just not very convenient. Shore diving is pretty dull as well. Be sure to ask for a room as far away from the elevator as possible. The hallways echo and amplify everything going on so when drunk kids get home at 3:00 AM and are yelling up and down the hall, you might have a fighting chance of staying asleep.

2nd trip to the El Coz!

Trebor Aug 8, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We were at the El Coz about 3 years ago. We love the location and the snorkeling right off the beach. The rooms were kept ... spotless and the grounds are lovely. However, the few things that were different this year were that the food selection and quality were dissapointing. Also, the main pool was very murkey and slimy and maintenance was working on the tile, chipping and stuff, while childeren were right there! looked kinda dangerous to me. The staff was awesome! Have been to several locations in Cozumel, Riverera Maya and Jamacia and have never received poolside and beachside service as well as this. [...] is the best server we have ever had any where in the world! For lunch, order off the menu and it is outstanding as well as the room service for dinner. Spent most evenings in town. We snorkeled at Punta Sur and had lunch at Coconuts. Great day. Went on the Tucan Tour and it was awesome as well. Still love the El Coz and will probably be back. Am sure when everything returns to normal, so will this resort.

This is our 3rd year coming to this resort. Very friendly staff, very helpful. The beds could be a little softer, but the ... rooms where clean. Definitely take advantage of the dinner dining, food is wonderful! Very relaxing stay. I would recommend calling ahead of time and making sure your room is located in the newer section, it has better A/C and water pressure. If you are looking for a night life at this hotel I suggest going elsewhere.

Recreation/Attractions hint, In Hotel

The in hotel dive shop is nice, staff are very helpful. It is very convenient since they are the only dive shop that will pick up at the hotel's dock no extra charge. I don't suggest renting their equipment; they don't take good care of it.

The hotel is about a 5 - 10 minute taxi drive away from down town. But you also get hassled a lot and it seem to get worse every year. I know that's there business to sell souvenirs but I don't like to be followed around and talked to like I owe everybody.

If you are going to leave the hotel very much rent a car at the airport.

--vacation freak, Texas Jul 21, 2009

Money savers hint

Rent a scooter or a car while staying at El Cozumeleno. It is far enough from town that 2 taxi fares are more than the cost of a scooter rental for a day.
