Check the restaurant schedule when you arrive. They are not all open every day. Plan so that you can try all of the restaurants at the resort. Also, when you arrive at the airport, do NOT stop on the way to get your transfer, cab, bus, etc. to go to your hotel. There will be desks and men in the corridor who will tell you that you must stop, but DON'T. They are there to talk you into timeshare seminars.

I just felt it in the picture of this hotel with the mountain right behind the building, when comparing hotels at puerto ... vallarta, that this is the only one I would want to stay in. All other hotels have a narrow strip of beach in front of them in an endless row of hotels, so it just wasn't doing it for me, no matter how fancy the pool or the rooms. And I was right. It's just so visually pleasant when your beach has huge natural rocks protruding into the ocean on both sides. The beach had depth so there was some space for the kids to explore. There were two different lagoons where my son could swim in a natural setting. (at the end of the rainy season. it never rained there, just in the mountains at night i guess.) we also loved letting the majestic waves of the pacific hit us, as well as getting drinks at the poolside bar. singles don't worry, our kid was usually the only one around. everyone else had their kids all day long in the explorers club, which seemed to be absolutely great, full of activities. But for us this was about my husband finally having the time to be with us 24/7. and this was the drem beach for that! It was just as great for families as it was for partiers and honeymoons. enough space to get away from the jamming poolside, separate classy pool for adults... staff was sooo friendly, especially our own at the preferred tower. in a fun and sophisticated way, not in a way that they are below us, serving. it felt like they really love their job and get paid decent. This was our first time in all inclusive. we've always been the traveler type not the tourist type. if you know what i mean. But with kids now... this was great. I thought we'd never want to eat at the hotel only, but I must say that after what we tried around town, our hotel had the best food ever. The mexican restaurant was better than any I've tried in my life. We visited another all inclusive in town, where our friends had a wedding, and that had a feel that ok, this is why the food and drinks are free. but in our hotel I felt like this can't be right!!! can't eat like this and then just leave a tip... supposedly tip is included, but it was clear that service was better where people tip. i felt bad for the poolsidebar guys who don't get tipped. at some point i got tired of the all american clientele. a little international feel would have been great. the happy-drunk a bit loud and i'm so funny and have no idea no-one else thinks so -crowd at the turtle release annoyed me. i was hoping that my son would have a chance to connect with a part of nature, but he was mainly holding a turtle staring at a huge older dude trying to hit on a young resort employee... ha, i hope it served as an example how not to do it... but then again other than the release, we could find our own spots in the huge grounds of this hotel. so that when we had not been drinking all day we could get away from those who have. nice!

Dreams Puerto Vallarta
PVSteve Nov 12, 2009
The hotel is in a perfect location. You are in your own little world at Dreams. The grounds are kept very nicely. The ... beach and water is spectacular. Views from the balcony rooms are postcard perfect. Relaxing at the pool or in a chair on the beach was great. It never seemed too crowded, as chairs were always available. The Preferred tower upgrade is WELL worth it. You get your own lobby staff, separate from the other tower. You get your own snack and drinks in the lobby too. [...], who works in the lobby is amazing. He alone made our stay special, as he was friendly to talk to and always was happy to make a drink or help out.The only downsides I would have to mention is that the food is hit and miss. We had some bad food and some decent food. Nothing was amazing though. Also, service at the bars can be slow at times. The restaurant wait staff also seemed to be a bit slow. Nothing seems to be in a hurry here. To me, this differs than a cruise because when on a cruise, the staff seemed to always be quick. This may have something to do with drinks being free on an all-inclusive and paid for on a cruise. We had beautiful weather for the trip (Nov 4th - 9th). This was a nice bonus. Overall, I give this place a good. Location is great. Service can be great, can be OK. Cleanliness is good, not great.

Good dreams and a few not so good dreams
CC Nov 11, 2009
This was a great resort with large rooms, a variety of restaurants and food, activities and excursions available and ... beautiful views of the shoreline and ocean. Most of the time service was excellent considering this is an all-inclusive resort. Food was better than expected and presented nicely. One negative was that I and two other members of my family had problems with our 'keys' working when we returned to our room. I was the first to have the problem. I was returning to my room to get something my sister needed immediately and I could not get into my room. It took a good 20 minutes to get someone who was able to open my door. My entire family was worried sick about me because I was to quickly retrieve something from my room. The bellman who helped me get into my room said he would have it fixed. Three hours later we stopped at the reception desk to make sure it had been fixed before returning to the room which was a pretty good hike. They said that, yes, it had been fixed. However, when we got to our room it had not been fixed. Luckily we found someone who had a master key, so got in and called reception. It took a good hour to replace the entire lock system on the door. The next day, my brother could not get into his room... a new key worked. The day after that my sister could not get into her room and she was in a hurry to get dressed and return to a wedding -- not a convenient time for a door problem. A new key was all she needed, but it was a huge inconvenience. It is a bit of a walk from the Reception desk and restaurants to the rooms. Also, I had ants in my room and told reception twice, but they never sprayed.

not family friendly to a toddler, would have been better for a 4-5+ age child. Went for a "destination wedding" seems ... expensive for what you get, didn't get a whole lot of special treatment for the wedding party, sad. If you went for a simple vacation, it would not be a bad place. Would be great if you didn't have kids and especially if you like to drink and lounge in the sun all day long.

Bella Nov 3, 2009
This was our 2nd time to Dreams PVR and again, we were not disappointed. The staff at Dreams are all first class ... professionals. They bend over backwards to please you. At dinner one night our son-in-law needed an ice bag for his knee and in a matter of seconds they were there helping him apply it to his knee. The food is always delicious, and the presentation is worth taking pictures of! The weather was post-card perfect! We spent most of our time at the infinity pool, only because we traveled without children and the larger pool is more family friendly during the day. Our only concern this time was the last night that we were there, there was a very strong paint or thinner odor in our room. The staff had been doing some remodeling to some rooms on our floor and we think the odors were carrying through the air ducts. We opened our deck door to get fresh air through, but it still was pretty strong. Next time we'll know to ask to move if they are remodeling close to our room. Other than that, a near perfect trip and we will most definitely return!!

We were there for our honeymoon and found exactly what we wanted. Very quiet on the beach with excellent views. There was ... also a lot included with snorkeling, kayaking, rock climbing, and the tons of activities that were provided. Great access to downtown with reasonable cab fare. Also good access to marina which is used for day/night trips. Only downside of the trip was that the food was extremely salty and only average.

The best in Puerto Vallarta? Maybe!
WeLoveCaletas Nov 2, 2009
We absolutely love Dreams. As a matter of fact, this was our second stay at Dreams in two years and it just so happens to be ... the only resort that we would stay at in Puerto Vallarta. The location is absolutely incredible with the only private beach in the area which yes, is very important. The beach is clean, well maintained and for resort guests only (with only a few Dreams-approved vendors walking by to try and sell you something that you don't need but end up purchasing anyways). Since our previous visit in 2007 the resort had performed some upgrades including turning one of their towers into a "preferred" tower...And referring to one of the three pools (the infinity pool, of course) as the preferred pool...And reserving some of the beach area (away from the main pool which means it's quieter, of course) as the preferred beach area. We were slightly annoyed by this but in the end, it didn't matter. Our room in the main tower and we were very pleased. The king sized bed was soft and comfortable, the room was large and well cooled and the bathroom had been upgraded. The housekeeping service in our room was wonderful as well with three daily sweeps including the morning cleaning, an afternoon check and an evening turn-down service. Each room includes a minibar complete with sodas, water and juices with the minibar being restocked every 24 hours. For those of you concerned about safety of belongings, don't worry. The rooms are equipped with safes in the closets which we've used both trips. As far as the food goes at the resort, Dreams has five restaurants: World Cafe (the buffet), Portofino (an adults only Italian restaurant), Oceana (a beach front seafood restaurant), El Patio (an indoors Mexican restaurant) and Seaside Grill (a beach front mixed fare restaurant). World Cafe is where most of the guests dine for breakfast and lunch and is open a few nights per week for dinner as well, although we only dined there for the first two meals of the day. Generally the food on the buffet is rotated, however breakfast is basically the same thing every single day and can be quite monotonous if you're a picky eater! Oceana does serve breakfast however we never ate there. For dinner we did eat at every single restaurant available and our favorite, by far, was Portofino. The service inside of that restaurant was incredible, the food was outstanding and the atmosphere was wonderful. For those traveling with kids, you might be disappointed to find that this is an adults only restaurant...And for those traveling without kids, you might be very excited to know this information. The main pool which includes the Manatee Bar, is the main meeting point for everyone at the resort. This pool does get quite loud during the day, as it is connected to the kids pool and also is where the entertainment is...They have music playing, water volleyball, aqua aerobics, silly games and more. Although the pool itself is refreshing and very large, we were slightly disappointed at how under maintained it was during this trip in particular. It appeared as though the staff responsible for sweeping out the pool and preparing it for the guests were not doing their jobs properly, as in the morning everyone in the pool was spending quite a bit of time getting away from dead insects (big ones too). Yuck. That was a downfall, really. And one more thing...Dreams has photography services on site currently advertising a special promotion of a free photo session. Although it's alluring, let me just give everyone a fair warning: do not count on the quality of the photographs, do not count on the scheduling and do not count on the products given to you. We had scheduled a photo session over one week in advance at Dreams (for a very special date during our trip, a special time and for a very special reason) during sunset and arrived 10 minutes early to find that the photographer was not available. 10 minutes AFTER our scheduled session time, another couple showed up...

Almost all of the stores in downtown PV are currently hurting thanks to the economy. Tourism in PV is down 40% from last year and it's obvious just by walking the streets...There are barely any tourists out on days where there are no cruise ships. If you are going to go shopping in the town, do NOT go on Wednesdays - this is when the cruise ships come to port. Most of the vendors raise their prices significantly at this time. Shop on another day and never pay anywhere near what they're asking for anything. Begin your negotiations at about 50% of what they're claiming is the price and go from there. 99.9% of the time that's what you'll pay!

Dreams was more like a nightmare!
Vacationers Oct 30, 2009
We went to Dreams after having a fabulous stay at Dreams in Cabo. This experience was more like a nightmare. Room was tiny ... and right next to elevator, could hear the ding, ding, dinging all day and night. Front desk could not have been any ruder. We had friends staying at another all inclusive in town at the same town, so they swung by and hung out in our room for about two hours. When they went to leave, the hotel would not let them out of the gate without paying $150 first. They claimed they should have bought a visitors pass. Never told us about this, they did not eat or drink anything while there. Never the less, we fought with them for about an hour, they never let up, would not open the gate to let them go. They basically held them hostage unless they paid which they eventually did. That was just the beginning. Will never stay at a Dreams again after this experience. Pools were tiny, room service took forever and my husband and I both go sick from the food. Dreams cabo is a yes but Dreams Puerto Vallarta is a NO!!!

By far this was one of the best vacations I have been in. The service at Dreams was just remarkable. I don't have any ... complaints. I traveled with my boyfriend and he had a great time as well. Activities are planned throughout the week and you get a list of the options they have in case you don't want to go into town. We had all our meals at the hotel, the restaurants were fantastic, my only regret is that we didn't have enough time to try all of them. Seaside Grill was my favorite! We are definitely planning to stay at a Dreams again, this time with less tours/plans so that we may enjoy the resort to the fullest. The release of the baby turtles was cute. Taxis are very readily available and they have a price list on the lobby. Next time I visit i will definitely go to El Eden and El Kliff. I heard these are beautifull places, you can walk around and have dinner, we didn't have time to do this.

Sunday nights Puerto Vallarta has a "festival" in the summer. There are numerous street vendors, performers, and shops open late. This was one of our favorite events of the trip. You get a piece of the local life and get to enjoy the sunset on the boardwalk. The festival takes over the whole boardwalk so there is a lot to see. We always felt safe and relaxed walking around. This is a MUST if you will be there on a Sunday night!!!

Don't be bullied or sweet talked by hagglers with the "best price". Whatever they ask, drop it down at least half way and then be willing to walk away. Usually they'll be chasing you with a YES!
