Beautiful resort, but with some catches.
Eric Nov 4, 2009
The Dreams Resort is a beautiful, tropical oasis! The grounds and rooms are exceptionally clean. There is someone cleaning ... something just about everywhere you look. We were extremely impressed when we were taken to our own receptionist area for the Towers section. We stayed in a jr. jucuzzi suite which had a stunning view. The beach front was perfect as was just about every apsect of the resort. Now for the bad, which really wasn't all that bad. The on-site food is average. Most dishes were very bland in flavor which I am sure is done to please the masses. Even their tacos were plain in taste. The breakfasts were average and contained items that were either cold or mushy. However, I answered this by frequenting the omelette bar. I must state though that I am NOT a buffet-type diner. I'll eat just about anything. But with buffet's- cold, mushy food is almost a given. Our next complaint has to be the alcohol or lack of. I mean the top shelf liquors and American beer selection was one of the reasons we chose this resort over others. We experineced a trip to the D.R in which the only beer they had was Presidente. Well, the beer selection- Corona, Bud Light, Negro _____, was it for beer. And all but one day the Bud Light ran out by around noon. We also discovered that you needed to be adament about getting top shelf liquor in your mixed drinks should you want it. And I mean very stern. Several times I would state Miami Vice, Rum Runner, Pina Coloda, etc with Bacardi and they would use a bottle of the cheap stuff right in front of them. When they would give you top shelf it was used in _very_ small quantities. I then tried ordering my drinks and say double the Bacardi and this usually led to a roll of the eyes or a conversation between the bartender and his buddies in Spanish. I would always ask in a polite voice and a smile on my face only to encounter this. I then found that bringing a $5 bill with me every other round (4 of us) would help. However, we all thought this was bunk being we paid to stay at a 4 star resort that stated top shelf liquors and American beer and still had to tip to get it.We also encountered that the upgraded bar in our room was nothing more special than any other wet bar. We could not 'up' our order. I asked if they could skip the Coke's and just give us Corona's and was told no, each fridge gets the same. I also could not get any liquor in our fridge as I understood we could. Also, our friend's who are a bit more pickey eaters would encounter the eye roll or muttering in spanish when they would make a request like American cheese on their club sandwich, not Swiss. Once I ordered to Daiquiri's with Bacardi and after I corrected the guy to add Bacardi not the cheap stuff my friend said he mumbled something "American" and shook his head as I walked away.In our opinion, we paid to be able to make these decisions. lol To be quite fair, we encountered the biggest problems with some of the guys at the pool bar, snack shack, and the bar in the Tower section. The complete opposite occured to us when we went downtown. The service was extremely polite and we were pampered as if we had hundred dollar bills falling out of our pockets! lolNOW I must say, [...] was fantastic!!! We would give him a $5 tip pleasingly every other order just because he was so pleasant and always had a smile on his face! The guy in the hut by the Kayaks was also extremely nice! We also had a nice bartender in the lobby bar. For whatever reason, it generally seemed to be the elder bartenders that were grouchy. Most of the younger guys and the ladies were very nice.We were very pleased by the events coordinater in the pool area. This guy is a riot! We looked forward to seeing this guy Every Day! We loved our afternoon water volleyball!!! lol They also would set up a big buffet on the lagoon beach and play baseball or football on a huge screen every night. The employees that were good (95%) did a gr...

This is our second trip to Dreams Cancun with a group of 9 friends. We were there previously in 2006. We enjoy this resort ... very much due to its perfect location with 2 beaches to choose from. The eternity pool was a favorite among all of us. The rooms were very clean and the staff was very accomodating and friendly. The bartenders were very friendly and made sure we were consistenly taken care of. Our favorite restaurant was the Seaside Grill by the private, quieter beach. We loved eating there for lunch and dinner and were never disapointed. The Oceana restaurant (seafood restaurant) on the otherhand was awful. The portions were extremely small and not tasty at all. All 9 of us agreed that it was the worst restaurant on the resort by far. Himitsu (asian/sushi) was "just okay"...not spectacular, not awful, but to be truthful, the appetizers were better than the main meals and sushi. The buffet was great for breakfast, and pretty good variety for lunch as well. We had dinner there once which was again disappointing - they need to upgrade their dinner buffet. Overall, you cannot beat the ocean-front rooms, the views are spectacular and the resort is very clean. They may need to upgrade some fixtures eventually as it looked a little more run down from 2006 yet, still a very good resort for all. We are definitely planning on going back however hopefully they will upgrade their menus and actually taste the food they are serving.

The hotel was very nice with very friendly staff. Waiters and bartenders were topnotch. There was opportunity to be in a busy ... or private area during the day. Off site trips activities were readily available. Night entertainment could be improved; however, it was off season, so we didn't expect all that much, which was the case.

We had stayed at this resort in May of '08 and had such a wonderful experience that we thought we would try it again. This ... time was just as wonderful. The only thing to give a slight complaint about was that they did not have all four restaurants open each night, so we had to wait a few times to eat dinner, but this is their slow season, so it was somewhat understandable. Also, if you are looking for an outstanding beach, this is not the place. The beach was adequate, but the pools and lagoon areas more than made up for lack of great beach.

Me and my boyfriend are in our mid-twenties and we stayed at Dreams in October. The location of the hotel was perfect, 5 ... minute walk to the main strip of bars, restaurants & shops. Our room viewed the dolphins, which was beautiful and fun to watch. The staff was very friendly and professional and the security was strict, they would not let you in the hotel without a name and room number. The food was decent, you had a variety of different restaurants to choose from each night. The only thing we would have wanted was a bigger beach and pool. But other than that we had a great trip, highly recommend this hotel (especially the spa)!

I've been to this hotel 5 times now. The staff is always friendly and extremely helpful. This resort does not attract the ... "wild" crowd that alot of the other resorts do. The food not only tastes great, but the presentation is always creative. The rooms are beautiful. Everyone who works for Dreams goes out of their way to make sure your vacation is a special one.

There are many companies that want you to purchase tickets for area attractions from them. They are costly since you have to pay for transportation as part of the package & that cost is per person. We rented a car from the hotel (Avis) for $159 for 3 days and bought tickets at the parks. Example Xcaret ticket at the park is $69 ea. If you buy from vendor in advance, tickets are no less than $99 ea. then cost of transporation of at least $50 per person. If you go to more than 1 park the savings is worth the car rental. Plus you can decide when you leave the hotel and what time you want to leave the parks.

Dreams Cancun was great
married couple in michigan Oct 23, 2009
This was our 4th time to Cancun. We previously stayed at a different resort, so we were a little hesitant. Dreams is ... beautiful. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The beach is to die for, the nicest one I have seen in Cancun. The dolphins there are always out, and you can watch them for hours. Be prepared if you want to swim with them, it is $159.00 per person. The restaurants were good. The Oceana and Seaside Grill were the best. The World Cafe seafood buffet was not that good. Not all of the restaurants were opened every night, I suppose because the hotel was not full. The swimming pool was freezing, so we never spent much time there. The rooms were beautiful. The only complaint there was that we could never get a hot shower-we never did complain though or it might have been fixed. Our friends had hot water but no pressure in their shower. This is a huge resort, and much older then the others. We had a wonderful relaxing vacation here.

If you want to buy souveniers don't do it at the hotel giftshop. Walk out the main entrance and stay to your left. A little ways down you will see a mall. There are great prices and you can get a lot for very little. We bought 3 t-shirts for 12.00.

Dreams come true with some catches...
Lance Oct 21, 2009
Dreams Cancun Resort was very nice. The hotel staff are helpful and nice. Facilities are clean and bright. The resort has 4 ... all inclusive restaurant (one of them was strictly buffet) and 1 restaurant that was discounted. We ate at all 4 inclusive restaurant during our stay and did not have to make any reservations. At most, we waited 5 minutes. The food varies from restaurant to restaurant and were all excellent. The resort has one main pool and a few smaller pools. The pool could be bigger but we are happy with it. There is also a lagoon and beach on premise so we relaxed there as well. What we really like about this place is that each night housekeeping would checkup on you and gave you the activities available for the next day. And they were plenty of activities. We saw a Mexican music, dance one night, a magic show the next, comedy, casino night, arts and crafts night. During the day, we participated in water aerobics, shooting, kayaking, volleyball, water volleyball, soccer, and yoga. The resort offer activities but we did not have the time. Everywhere you are in the resort there was a staff nearby to get you drinks or whatever you like. The only thing that we didn't like was that the internet was not free. There is an additional charge. We were surprise to find this out when we got to the hotel. Another thing that made this trip less then perfect is that not all the restaurants are open every night. Only the buffet was available everyday. So you had to plan your meals a little bit. Despite its slight short coming Dreams Cancun Resort is by far the best resort we have gone to in Cancun.

The hotel was nicer than expected based on other reviews but unfortunately I can't say that it was a 5 star or even 4, closer ... to a 3 1/2 star. The food was mediocre although sushi fabulous. Because the hotel isn't at full capacity don't expect all restaurants to be open. We were there 4 nights/5 days and the never saw the Snack Shack open. The staff, while pleasant, seemed put out and annoyed most days and basically stand there expecting a tip for every little thing they do. The pool was small but I'm a beach girl so I'd never waste a day in paradise by a pool. This hotel didn't seem very kid friendly but it's hard to say when I didn't travel with any. The rooms were clean and we did get an upgrade but had to pay $60. The dolphins were fun to look at in the beginning but then you just start feeling sorry for them. It was a fun time but I wouldn't go back to Dreams. Just keep telling yourself...you're in paradise!

We read several reviews about Dreams Cancun before booking the trip...most were positive but a few were very negative, which ... concerned us. However, the package was a good deal so we booked. Frankly, I don't know if the people that were negative in their comments about about Dreams went to the same resort we did. The resort was very clean. The staff consistently went out of their way to serve us and make us comfortable. The waiters at the restaurants remembered our names from one meal to the next. The resort had daily activities planned that were fun for the entire family. One never had to leave the resort to be well fed, well entertained and generally well pampered. We have no reservations about recommending Dreams to anyone thinking about staying there.

This was our first experience at an all-inclusive hotel and we really enjoyed not having to worry about meals and ... refreshments. There was enough to do at the hotel (beaches and pools, evening entertainment, watching the dolphins, and the wedding events) and close to the hotel (mostly shopping) so that we didn't feel we needed to go on side trips or events. That was very relaxing for us. I was tempted to go swimming with the dolphins, but somehow just didn't get around to it. The Sea Side Grill became our favorite place to eat. Our least favorite place to eat was the World Cafe.

The hotel has dress codes for its dining areas. So check to be sure that you have the required types of clothing for the restaurants you want to visit. I ended up wearing the same trousers for a couple of nights each because of this. But that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the food!

One tip I must make is to skip the resort restaurants/bars and walk 10 minutes downtown. That is where excellent food and spectacular nightlife is to be had! Senor Frogs had a Halloween party we will never forget! If you are looking to have fun, downtown is the place to go!

Seaside Grill by the private beach is the best on the resort. The filet mignon was excellent for dinner. their lunch menus are very good too. Their bar actually makes better drinks that the other 2 bars by the other beach.

Drive out of the immediate downtown area and head back up towards bubba gumps for better shopping and the plazas.

DON'T GO ON THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT. SEA SICKNESS PILLS IF YOU MUST.

All the hot night spots are about a 10 minute walk, as well as some good shopping for souvenirs. A higher end mall is just a short cab or bus ride away.

If you want to buy souveniers don't do it at the hotel giftshop. Walk out the main entrance and stay to your left. A little ways down you will see a mall. There are great prices and you can get a lot for very little. We bought 3 t-shirts for 12.00.

There is something going on each night at the resort. Just ask any staff member and they will direct you to it. You do not need to leave the resort to have fun.

Swim with the dolphins! It's pricey, but a once in a lifetime experience, especially for kids.

Avoid the World Cafe @ dinner...it's very mediocre and buffet style.

Not worth it to upgrade to club tower. Also, it may be more benefitial to book directly with hotel.

Unless you want to be bothered and pestered, stay away from the markets where they do not have prices on items. We went to market 28 (close to downtown). You could not walk through the stores and look at anything without two or three people relentlessly trying to sell you anything they can. They will price stuff wayyyy too high and then they will bother you and bother you even if you are not interested. There is no such thing as looking around. Hardly anything had prices on it (for a good reason). Just go to the nicer outlets and a place called Mexico outlet for a no pressure, fair price, shopping experience. (Do not commit to anything without getting the price first). Anything!

La Mansion has the best steaks and service you could ever ask for!!!

One great thing about Dreams - we were not approached with timeshare offers. Do NOT fall for the very ingenious tactics of the timeshare salespeople elsewhere. They are everywhere - the most aggressive one we faced was at our car rental location. Be polite but firm and QUICK in refusing their offers.
