WOW! we were blown away by the hospitality and friendliness of the staff and people there at the hotel. Upon arrival the ... owner,[...], weclomed us and took us for a ride to one of the local malls to do some shopping. He gave us about 2hrs of his busy schedule and treaded us as family. This may not be a resort, but it felt like one. The hotel itself is very clean and the rooms as well. Although rooms are a bit dated, it's well maintained and A/C worked great. Also drinking water was great, did not need to buy bottled water. Activities at hotel are limited, but there is plenty to do and see within walking distance or a short ride on the bus. One thing to find out, when you book you reservation, is to know if your package includes breakfast. We were under the impression that breakfast was complimentary, but is not. Over all for the price and location,we would recommend this hotel highly to friend and family.

Oistens is super for fresh fish every day. There is no shortage of cabs but the bus service is only 75 cents American and an adventure. We had our breakfast every day at the hotel and it was great--never ate there at night.

What you save on the hotel price, you'll spend on taxis getting to and from town and if you want to stay in the hotel... not this one.

Take public buses or the small white vans. They can get pretty crowded but it's pretty cheap. Each time we wanted to go somewhere it cost $1.50US total for both of us. Taxi rides are pretty expensive, depending on where you want to go. From the airport to Dover Beach was $25US + tip.

So so island hotel
Cheap Business Traveler Sep 5, 2009
Plenty of locals ready to sell you whatever you want right on the beach, on one side, and almost at the front door of the ... hotel, on the other side. The location was at one end of the St. Lawrence Gap... a fairly safe place to walk, bar to bar, and crawl back to the hotel. The locals want to talk you out of your money, not beat it out of you... I like that! The room was average clean, but the shower rod was rusty and held up by super glue. The kitchen was clean but old and cheap construction. Nearby hotels offered better menues, activities, beach bars, and room views. But I'm betting the prices are higher too. This hotel is good for the price, though I'll take my chances exploring another one when I go back to the Island.

Our experience with the hotel was very good overall. We didn't know what to expect when we decided to go to Barbados and the ... Dover Beach Hotel. The hotel activities coordinator was superb; she gave us very valuable information and saved us some money along the way. We miss you already, [...]!Lots of what Americans would call mom and pop restaurants near the hotel (St Lawrence Gap) plus a few really nice ones.

Great Location
Rock Jul 17, 2009
Located not too far from the airport, you can't beat Dover Beach Hotel's location. It is located in Barbados' hip St. ... Lawrence's Gap, and it is not too far from the famous Ostin's. The hotel is tucked intimately on the beach with a very lush setting. Those who stay on the beach side of the hotel have a balcony with fantastic views of the very active Dover Beach and the hotel's swimming pool. The room was equipped with a full kitchen. The hotel provided a list of tours and transportation everyday. Security was on duty 24/7 and was very helpful when our clothes blew off the balcony and when we needed extra towels during the time the maid staff was unavailable. I enjoyed the complimentary breakfasts. It's not your run of the mill breakfasts you have at some hotels. There your food is prepared at the time it is ordered. All the activity along the Gap can be reach by foot. Every night several hotels and clubs have varying entertainment from karaoke to live bands. On any given day, ladies often get in free at a club and many offer happy hour. In a nutshell, our vacation was fantastic. However, perhaps Dover Beach Hotel can offer more entertainment at its hotel. Perhaps they can freshen up the inside of the hotel's rooms with paint, new drapes, and new bedding. Perhaps they can do a more thorough cleaning. We experienced floors that weren't mopped very well. Matter of fact, pieces from the mop were left behind. On two occasions, I had to use a towel to re-clean the floors. The bathroom didn't smell clean when it was cleaned. I didn't smell a hint of disinfectant. The shower curtain was dirty. The frig smelled like fish when we arrived. Some channels on the t.v. didn't work properly. Please be mindful the issues mentioned above weren't daily occurrences and they may have only occurred in our room. The staff was happy to alleviate problems that were brought to its attention. Overall, the hotel room was satisfactory. Also, every other part of the hotel was very clean.

There is a store that is a very short walk from Dover Beach Hotel that serves some of the best local food on the island. You get a lot for your money. I know that statement is hard to believe with Barbados' prices. You may want to eat your food in front of the flat screen t.v. with the locals who gather there everyday to watch cricket. The little club next door often offers live entertainment.

Nice location and hotel for the price.

This hotel was exactly what we expected it to be and what it described itself as on its website. We were looking for ... something smaller near restaurants so we could walk. This hotel is at the end of "The Gap" so you are away from all the noise and bustle but can still walk to all the restaurants (at the other end of the Gap). We also wanted something with a beach access and a pool for cooling off. It has direct beach access and a small pool (and a small fitness room and internet kiosk). It also has a sun deck that looks out over the ocean. It has a small restaurant where we had breakfast and lunch a few times. We found the staff to be great and the food good and not too expensive. The best bonus was they had a lovely in-house activities director, [...], who helped us make reservations for snorkeling tours and rental cars at no extra charge! She would check to see when things were open and how much their entrance fees were for us. She was really great! There is a small store nearby for buying some items to use in the kitchenettes. The room was clean and well equipped: real king size bed, hair dryer, iron and board, Cable TV and full kitchenette (microwave, fridge, oven, coffee maker). NOTE: We reserved a Garden Room and when we arrived there was construction going on next door so they tried to move us to a room overlooking the street (yuck!). I actually went back to the desk and asked if they had anything else available and we ended up in a Pool/Ocean view room for the same price as the Garden Room. If you can get an upgrade like this it was fantastic. Otherwise, I would probably splurge and get the Pool/Ocean view room. It would have been worth the extra money as sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee in the morning (or in the evening with a glass of wine) looking out over the ocean was heavenly. The only thing we didn't like was that this area of Barbados had some high winds and the ocean was a little too rough for my husband's and I liking in terms of swimming. We thought the beaches up the West coast were calmer. We particularly liked Mullins Beach (free off street parking, GREAT swimming and a small reef you can snorkel over if you have equipment, a beach shack for snacks and you can rent lounge chairs there). Regarding the hotel, overall, we paid US $83 per night (before taxes and fees) in June and we felt this was a great deal for what we got. I would definitely recommend this hotel for something inexpensive on the beach in the Gap.

I have three helpful hints: (1) Take the 1.50 buses for short distance stops. They are all over the place. They are fast, easy and cheap! (2) Rent a car at least one day and drive (on the left side of the road, British style) to the North Point of the island and walk through the caves and see the view, which is truly outstanding! Driving back down you can stop at a few beaches that would take a long time to reach by bus from the Gap with all the stops they make...try Mullins Beach (described more below). (3) Be prepared for very pricey restaurants. We are from the DC Metro area and we were shocked by the prices. Plus many of the restaurants had mediocre food for the price you paid. This being said, definitely go to Pisces restaurant. It may look expensive but it was worth it!

Perfect little piece of paradise

We went to Barbados for a wedding. The bridal couple had chosen the Rostrevor hotel and gotten a deal there, but we found a ... better package deal on Orbitz with The Dover Beach Hotel. Most wedding guests stayed at the Rostrevor, but we were much more pleased with Dover Beach (and other wedding guests who didn't choose it were jealous of our showers actually having warm water!). It had air conditioning, a television with cable stations, a beautiful beach, great pool area, and delicious on-site restaurant which served all meals and had daily happy hour specials. The rooms also have fully-stocked kitchenettes, with stove, microwave, sink and a large mini-fridge. I would definitely choose this hotel again for the price. The location is not right in the heart of the St. Lawrence Gap, but is easily walkable, and better because it's quieter, and the beach is actually adjacent to the hotel. Great little spot!!!

My husband and I just wanted a beach!!! Didn't care for frills and thrills on this vacation...money was tight but the winter ... was killing us so we researched Dover Beach Hotel and it was just what we wanted! Simple, near a beach and extremely clean!!! PROS: The room even had a kitchen! So if you really want to be budget you can cook your own food...they even did our dishes! I wouldn't recommend it for a honeymoon, but if you just want to be in Barbados and lay on a beach all day, while keeping budget in mind, its the perfect place. All I cared about was CLEAN and NO BUGS and that is what I got! Staff was also friendly and helpful. Beaches are all public so you can walk down and enjoy the beach that the suckers are paying $300 a night to enjoy! Walking distance from St.Lawrence Gap! CONS Bed was foam ! Didn't mind it, but some might... Lots of noise coming from a new hotel construction going up construction beside Dover Beach. View from Garden View suite not that great but I wasn't there for the view and we got the cheapest room available...

This is not a luxury or resort property, but for the budget minded, it is great. I have issues with air conditioning, and was ... delighted that in the living/dining area, there was a ceiling fan. Air conditioning that was very controllable was in the bedroom. The unit had a small refrigerator, stove, and utinsels; there were a couple of stores for supplies within easy walking distance. The unit also had a lovely little balcony overlooking the garden. I think this was an older section of the facility, but it was spotlessly clean and fresh. The pool, in the main part of the facility, was small but pleasant for a few laps. Wifi service in the lobby provided a good signal. The restaurant was okay, but nothing to write home about, although service was good. I should note that my stay was very brief, but I would return here without hesitation.

Dover Beach is in the Gap in Barbados, about half-way between Bridgetown and the airport. Within walking distance of the hotel there are a number of restaurants and bars, as well as convenience stores for supplies if one prefers do cook and do for one's self. The hotel is on the beach, which purports to attract egg-laying sea turtles.
