Great but only for single person
Capitol Traveler Nov 20, 2009
My husband and I selected this hotel because for us it is within walking distance (less than 2 miles) to many D.C. ... attractions. We seek out boutique hotels and enjoyed the Donovan House's stylish, modern interior. Our room was extremely quiet and very clean. The room was well designed for a single person but did not accommodate two comfortably. There is only one difficult to move chair and it is at a desk from which it is impossible to see the TV. One rather unwelcoming detail is that there is a fee for using the in-room coffee or tea.

Very trendy hotel. But not very high end features. Bathroom was more looks than functionality. Nice helpful staff. Good ... location between Dupont Circle and the monuments. Good price. Would still stay here before the Marriott across the street. Supposed to have a great pool on the roof, but we were there when it was too cold to try it out.

We went on a last minute romantic getaway and the hotel was the icing on the cake! Super easy to find, reasonable room rate, ... super friendly and helpful staff and the room was unbelievable! Very unique yet ergonomic-plus the platform bed was SUPER comfortable! The service was fast and friendly and the only kind of downer was that they charged for the coffee in the mini bar...otherwise I would definitely recommend it for a couple's weekend!
Traveler type: Couples
Everything is in walking distance from the hotel-every kind of restaurant, museum, monument and attraction possible...but I would recommend checking out the Old Town Trolley tours. We went on the monuments by moonlight and it was worth every penny!

I traveled to DC for a conference held at the convention center and Renaissance Hotel. The room decor, cleanliness, and ... comfort level were excellent. This hotel had been a Holiday Inn but extensive renovations were apparent. My room was somewhat small and did not have a desk, which was inconvenient. The convention center and National Mall are both 15 minutes away when walking.

This was my first trip to DC and the Staff at Donovan house couldn't ahve been more friendly and helpful. They gave me ... directions and tips to start my day and always greated me with a smile and a "well how did it go?" When I got back. The room was very clean and comfortable. It was pretty well located to get around DC. Close to the Metro and really walking distance to most places you'd like to go. I would stay there again.

As a business traveler I loathe corporate hotels and always look for a boutique hotel that balances my work needs with ... personalized service. The Donovan is in an excellent location, is perfectly appointed, and has the warmest and most professional staff I have encountered in years. From my arrival at midnight to my hurried departure in the late afternoon, they treated me as if I was their highest priority. The gentleman that maintained my room made me feel like he took personal interest in my comfort. I will return to the Donovan each time I am in DC.

unsatisfied couple Sep 14, 2009
The initial check in went ok, but the staff could have been a lot friendlier. The building was far smaller than expected, ... but cute and trendy. The room was smaller as well, but entirely doable. The bad part was the poor quality of the entire place. There were tons of places where paint was splattered, lights were in the wrong place and had wires or wood showing. It felt as though the contractor had the entire building completed in the 1/2 the time it should have taken. This hotel could have been great, but instead it was just cheap. The bathroom is a whole other issue... the sink didn't drain, the shelves are completely in the way and I managed to hit my head about 5 times and i'm not a big person. The shower is also made of plastic, so it is very slippery and also does not drain well. The last complaint is that we had two people in the room and only one robe was given to us. This is a completely simple aspect of the room, but it made us feel like our satisfaction was not their number one concern. Would not stay here again unless it was the only hotel open in the area because location is all it had going for it other than the comphy pool-side furniture.

Only pretending to be upscale
LB & KG Aug 30, 2009
Although the location was nice for sight-seeing (the purpose of our trip), we were not impressed. When we initially pulled ... up, we followed the directions on the building to wait for the valet to come out to park the car. However, after waiting a good five minutes, I went inside to see what the holdup was. The Front Desk attendant was not paying attention to the monitor of the outside of the building and had not seen us. Hence, we had to wait an additional 15 minutes for the valet and bellhop to appear (they told us they had been sleeping). Additionally, when we went to lie down, there was only a flat sheet wrapped around the mattress and comforter on the bed. I feel this was truly unsanitary (the comforter had a big black stain) and requested a bed-pad and fitted sheet be added the next day. A bed-pad was added but not a fitted sheet (we slept between the sleet and comforter). It appeared that the comforter cover was changed daily (it was white cotton and the black stain disappeared) but it was 90 plus degrees outside and an additional sheet would have been nice. We got up in the morning and went down to the cafe for the tail end of the continental breakfast. There was little left, so we picked out what appeared appetizing and sat down. Unfortunately, my bagel was stale and we shared the two tablespoons of fruit that was left on the self serve bar. When we got up to leave, an attendant chased us down and handed us a bill for $30. Had I known the continental breakfast was $15 per person, we would have walked the two blocks down to Starbucks instead. It didn't really bother us that the pool closed at five pm (to transform into a club) but it was irritating that the bottom was slimy and dirty. I asked an attendant if they could skim out some paper (?) that was floating around in chunks, but they never returned. Don't expect to swim laps in this pool either, it is far too small. After returning to the room from the pool we noticed that new towels had been delivered. It was quite sad at that point to have one more thing go wrong, but after taking a shower, we noticed the towels had the all-too-distinct musty smell of sitting in a washer overnight. All in all the service at this hotel was nothing to brag about. They may be an international hotel but they don't act as upscale as they proclaim to be. Business travelers and international guests received preferred treatment over sight-seeing couples and families. There was only ONE Front Desk attendant who gave us practical and helpful information when we requested it (she went as far as to print detailed maps of when to get on and of the metro); all others glared at our jeans, mumbled two word answers, and waived us off.

Please be aware that the hotel recommends only restaurants which require a jacket and tie. We enjoyed: Posto on 14th street north of P street (reasonably priced Italian the brick oven pizza was to die for), 14K Bar and Grill on the corner of 14th street and K street (expensive but the taste and quality was 1st class), and Logan Tavern on P street west of 14th street (reasonably priced and the menu was very diverse).

This is a very trendy hotel that has been recently renovated. The rooms are great, but small. But most hotel rooms in DC ... are smaller than other rural areas. The staff is very service oriented and go out of thier way to make your stay comfortable. There is a bar on the top floor that is very popular on nights and weekends.

Donovan House - Aug 2009
Madisoniem Aug 29, 2009
Overall, the hotel suited my needs, and was in the perfect location. The bed was clean and comfortable. Check-in was easy. ... I was in a "superior queen" room, and it was a decent size for one person, but potentially could have felt small for two. The shower did not have much water pressure, and didn't even heat up to a comfortably warm temperature either morning (not a fun way to wake up!) The "feel" of the hotel is very chic, swanky and cool. It's well decorated, and it seems that the rooftop bar draws a cool crowd. However....the downside of the bar is that I could hear the "thump thump" of the base in my room till like 10:30pm at least. Overall, I would likely book in this hotel again -- especially with the rate that I found on Orbitz.

If you are visiting the national mall and all the memorials, it is advised you take advantage of teh Metro train system. It is very cheap and will save you lots of walking. (Caveat: recently the train system has been delayed due to the June 22nd crash, the escalators in the Metro appear to be malfunctioning in many terminals, and the airconditioning systems in many terminals weren't working.)
