When we checked in, the communication with the woman behind the desk was almost non- existent. It was almost as if we were ... disturbing her by checking in. We went to our room, and found 2 maids just begining to clean. We went back downstairs to the lobby and were told to wait 10 minutes. We sat down and were asked to go down to Joey G's to wait. After 20 minutes, we went back to the front desk and were told the room was ready - they forgot we were waiting! The room was very small, even for NYC. The furniture was chipped and there was an iron burn on the carpet. The room was too hot and when I asked on several occasions to have it checked, I was told "Uno momento" and nothing was done about it. The "continental breakfast" featured dinner rolls and tea bags - no hot water mind you, but the bags were there. The location is fabulous, but I would never suggest this hotel.

Not bad for the business traveller

The rooms were small, but it shouldn't matter since you didn't go to NYC to sit in the hotel....it had an EXCELLENT ... location; beware of the "Continental Breakfast", it's no more than rolls/packaged muffins and (if you're lucky enough to get there before they're gone), croissants, but an adequate start to the day with the free coffee - the wireless internet is also an issue since it's only accessible in the lobby....but all in all, not a bad deal for the business traveller, especially if you're on a budget.

Get your theatre tickets at the TKTS booth in TImes Square. You need to buy them shortly before the show (no future sales). For the best selection, line up early. We were is line shortly before 10 a.m. for matinee tickets (it opens at 10) and waited for 45 minutes. We had a list of desired shows (reviews at nytimes.com were very helpful) and tickets were available for all but one. We narrowed our selection down after talking to others waiting in line. Our seats were excellent and we saved about $28 per ticket.

The Da Vinci is a small, boutique hotel and is inexpensive by New York standards. Our room was very clean and quiet, It had a ... safe, a small fridge and free wireless. The bathroom was nice and bright, but the room was very dark--just a dim ceiling fixture and one bedside lamp. There was a very nice vanity table in the room but no light to make it usable. The lobby is attractive and the staff was helpful. The hustle and bustle of New York is just out the door. It is an easy walk to Broadway theaters and there are lots of restaurants nearby (we recommend the Red Eye Grill). We had a good meal at the Italian restaurant in the basement. Hotel guests get a 15% discount. A free continental breakfast consisted of rolls, cellophane-wrapped muffins and coffee (no decaf). We went to a diner on Broadway near 55th. We will stay at the Di VInci again the next time we go to Manhattan.

The hotel staff was always welcoming. The entire hotel was always clean. My only complaint is that the beds were not very ... comfortable. The heater is ran by a thermostat that controls the entire building, but once it gets working there were no problems at all with room temperature.

Mom & Daughter Oct 29, 2009
We were on a mother/daughter trip. The staff was friendly. We wanted to eat in the small restaurant downstairs which didn't ... go well. It rained 2 inches that day and the Mc Donalds gutters caused flooding in the resteraunt. We had just orderd drinks and food. We were given our drinks, at the high price of $8.50 per drink. Five minutes after receiving the drinks we were asked to pay and quickly leave, and we would need to eat somewhere else. I understand it was being flooded and not something they could control. The least they could have done was give us our drinks without charge, which we wern't given time to even finish. That service could have been better.

Affordable and convenient
I heart NY Jun 21, 2009
My husband and I stayed in this hotel twice in 6 months. First with our 7-yr. old daughter and another time with without her. ... Both times, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Fixable problems in the room were fixed promptly (others such as a noisy air conditioner, we didn't even complain about). We came back to Da Vinci because of its location and affordability. We spent hardly any time in the room, so we didn't feel we needed to put a lot of $ into the hotel. The rooms are a little worn out (the carpet could be washed or even replaced), but I have seen worse in my travels. After checking out, the staff will look after your luggage until you have to leave, which was nice, so we could get one more museum visit in. The wireless internet access did not reach out to the 5th floor, but you can access it in the lobby. Excellent location for broadway plays!

The shower leaked when I took a shower, found a spider, had to hold the handle down for the toilet to flush, had to wait an ... hour for toilet paper and then had to go get it ourselves. There was also mold growing on the bathroom ceiling, bed was uncomfortable and the springs popped when you would get up. I won't be staying here again.

Very nice Jun 5, 2009
I stayed for five nights. Friendly staff, nice room, although mine was at the first floor and people walked past it ... frequently. Breakfast is slim, but hell you're in New York, get a smoothy at Jamba Juice on the move or have a real lunch in a restaurant. There was no window though, It would have been nice to look outside or have sunlight in the room, but again, you're only there to spend the night. Excellent location, broadway around the corner, central park at walking distance and columbus circle station and E-train to JFK two blocks away.

Nice, quaint hotel
Just your average traveler on a budget May 11, 2009
The stay was great. The hotel is small and quaint, with nice room. Plenty of space given the location in NYC, with a ... spacious bathroom. The beds were a bit firm for my personal liking, but my boyfriend thought they were great. My only real complaint is that the air conditioning sometimes made loud noises during the night which woke me up, but I went right back to sleep. It was very quiet in the room. The staff were very friendly, and willing to hold your luggage after you check out. There's a free breakfast in the morning, consisting of pre-packaged muffins and pastries, some rolls and jelly, and coffee and tea. There's also two computers with internet for hotel guests. There's not many ammenities, but we didn't need anything else. Overall I was very pleased with the room and hotel ambiance, especially for the price we paid.

Mariastark Oct 26, 2008
The Da Vinci is NOT a superstar hotel, you do not feel like a million bucks when you walk in, the shampoos are NOT name ... brand, and words like minimalist modern or chic do not apply. If those things are important, and I totally understand that they often can be, this may not be the hotel for you. If, however, you're on a budget and in a city like NY just need a clean bed, shower, and high speed internet it's perfect! It was clean, friendly, and very easy. The location cannot be beat! Bathrooms were just redone in all marble and quite lovely. It was perfect for my brief stay in which what was outside the hotel was so much more important than what was in it!
