Great location, needs a little work

This was a good hotel that served its purpose as a spot needed for a quick business trip. My comments are based on the room ... mostly (where I spent most of my time when I was at the hotel). Overall, it was clean an quiet but you can tell before the current ownership the place was probably a bit run down and bummy. So looking at the small things (but it isn't about the small things anyway), it was a low budget remodeling job on this old hotel to try and turn it into a trendy, contemporary hotel. Just look at the name... "Custom Hotel," the opposite of "The Standard." Good effort but needs more work. The bed was comfortable, they had cable and movies, and a decent bathroom (great shower), well stocked fridge (that's where they get cha), great A/C. On to the bad... poor painting job in the hallways and rooms, dirty windows (and there was a lot of window for my room), popcorn ceiling (terrible), unsecured wall outlet (the plate was hanging off), cheap plastic wall trim, inoperable safe. There you have it. I have stayed in worse and better places. I would stay here again.

Jim Jun 24, 2009
This place was different to say the least. The parking was limited and I mean limted, like 15 spots for the whole hotel. The ... inside is clean, but weird looking. There was actually large stuffed sheep in the lobby. The rooms were a strange design with the beds being a box in the center of the room. It felt like we were sleeping in a litter box. It was close to the airport though.

Our overall experience at the hotel was great. We stayed for six nights and I have to admit I was a little apprehensive ... before we arrived because we received such a good deal on the place that I imagined we were not going to get what the website promised, but my boyfriend and I were happily surprised. The valet guys, desk clerks and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful. We received complimentary shots of espresso at check in and the IPOD dock and the flat screen TV were a perfect touch to have in our room. The breakfast, coffee and fresh squeezed OJ in the downstairs restaurant was delicious and if you couldn't stay for breakfast you could get coffees to go which worked out perfect for us on some mornings. The hotel bar/pool/lounge had a nice lay out, but unfortunately the weather was not cooperative so we did not get to utilize the pool like we wanted too, but we did enjoy the bar scene at night. The lobby decor was modern and unique and my overall favorite piece of the hotel were the toy sheep in the lobby five white ones and one "brown" sheep of the family they were adorable. In the end, the Custom Hotel reminded me of the Standard Hotel mixed with the W and if the Custom hotel was located in Hollywood the pool/barside lounge would have been packed Thurs-Sat night. I will definitely stay here again.

Cool decor, relaxing stay
Katelyn M Jun 22, 2009
I stayed at the Custom Hotel this past weekend while visiting my boyfriend in LA. He's living in a small apartment with a ... bunch of other guys so we treated this as a bit of a vacation for both of us. I chose the Custom Hotel because it was close to the airport and his apartment, it looked like it had a lot of character, and the Cheaptickets rate was very reasonable. When I first drove up, I was unsure of where to go; the main entrance to the hotel is in the back, and the roadway to the parking area is apparently two ways but is barely wider than a single lane. I quickly learned that parking was valet only, and was an extra daily charge on top of the hotel rate. While the valet attendants were friendly, I would have preferred having the option to self-park. I only really interacted with the staff upon checking in and out. They were courteous enough, although they didn't strike me as especially friendly, and I don't know how helpful they would have been had I required extra assistance with anything. We slept a bit late and didn't end up leaving the room until after the maid service, so I can't comment on housekeeping. The room itself was comfortable, although the layout was a bit weird. The bed faced the windows and the television was mounted on the wall to the side. Our window was directly over the pool and restaurant area, which was a bit noisy at night but nothing the A/C couldn't drown out. In general, we were out and about most of the trip, so we pretty much just wanted a quiet, comfortable place to sleep and relax in. I'd say we got that, and the fact that it was nicer than your average chain hotel was a bonus in my eyes.

The Custom Hotel is a beautiful, simple, boutique hotel. It looks good (another reviewer described it as David Lynch-ian, and ... I'd have to agree with that assessment.) The pool and facilities were perfectly serviceable, and it has a free shuttle to the airport. The shuttle and housekeeping staff were excellent, as was some of the desk staff. A couple of the desk attendants were a little brusque, but for a place like this, that's expected. Use the public restrooms past the lobby. Bottom lit, and they have a weird, wonderful bayou noise soundtrack! Great new Thai restaurant within walking distance, and Bristol Farms across the street is a wonderful, convenient place for morning coffee, sandwiches and gourmet groceries. My only complaint is the location, and it's hardly the fault of the Hotel. It is close to the airport, but about a $60 cab ride from downtown LA. As someone traveling from a city with excellent public transportation, LA's lack of (or, more accurate, lackadaisical) public transportation was frustrating. Using it one day to get to downtown required riding a shuttle, a bus, the LA metro with three transfers and finally a cab to get to my location on the UCLA campus. Location notwithstanding, I would definitely recommend staying here when in LA, just plan to rent a car when you do.

Being close to the airport is a plus. However, not being right at the airport allowed for more restful sleep. A "Ralph's" ... next door made it really convenient. However, no refrigerator in the room. The best part is the staff is super friendly & helpful. Excellent Thai restaurant a short distance.

I was sorely dissappointed with the huge parties, lines of people, small rooms, no fridge, no micro. could not adjust the ... AC. Drunken partiers all hours and vomit and noisy hallways. You would expect that in Vegas. Won't recommend it, also won't use Orbitz-can NOT get a refund. paid for 4 nights, stayed 2 and paid to go somewhere else. No second exit if you wanted to avoid the lines to get in or out. It was a gift for my daughter who had moved from the East Coast. We both were dissapointed-Chris S PDX

This is my second time at the Custom and I will stay again when in LA. It is near my kid's university so I chose it for ... location, but I love it for its comfortable beds, great staff and fun atmosphere. There is a decent morning breakfast, good club for Saturday night and a small but nice pool side area. Mostly though, the staff are so very very nice.
