Great location, room needs updates.
Tom Nov 9, 2009
Great location at 14th and K. We were "bumped" to a king deluxe room with a small sofa, desk, and chair in the room. TV was ... maybe a 27" tube type. Room in need of repairs. The ceiling was "touched up" in places with noticeable drywall repairs and quite easy to see when lying on the bed. Needs a new coat of ceiling paint. Several wall repairs in places where you could see the spliced wallpaper over the old. It seemed as if this particular room was sandwiched in between several others. When someone in an adjacent room took a shower, flushed the toilet, or turned on the sink, you knew it.

Not worth the location

My husband and I booked this swanky hotel because this trip was supposed to be our honeymoon for our wedding 3 years ago. It ... was situated close to the DC highlights (White House, Smithsonian museums, monuments and memorials, and the Metro) so we thought we'd splurge on the hotel for the convenience. We had a room on the 8th floor. The lobby is gorgeous. The room was only okay. There was a curly hair (not dwelling on where it might have come from) on our complementary bathrobe. The coffee pot and mugs/glasses were on a wheeled rack next to the toilet (they could have put it in the main room away from airborne droplets). We should have suspected something when we saw there were complementary lavender scented room spray, ear plugs, and a night mask. We went through 3 bottles of room spray during our week-long stay because the room smelled so musty. One night it smelled like sewer back up. There was nothing around that I could see that would make that smell (flushed all the toilets, ran water in the tub and sink). We ended up leaving the window open during the day while we were out being tourists. That made it tolerable. Trying to ask the maid for a real room spray was useless. We had brought our own earplugs for the plane flight and I used them each night. The ones provided were the cheapo cylinder ones that are very stiff. I didn't bother trying them. Our room faced the very busy corner of 14th and K Streets and the first night was subjected to loud car honking and the inevitable aggressive counter-honkings and police and ambulance sirens. That was a Saturday night and while the other nights were similar, none matched that first night's din. I didn't use the eye mask but I could see someone wanting to since the heavy drape did not completely cover the edge of the window so the glare of the streetlights came in. There was no refrigerator in the room (and granted, we did not ask if a portable one was available). Since this was our first trip to DC, I went down to the lobby mid-week to ask about the Tourmobile or Old Trolley Tours I had read about on pamphlets. The woman at the desk had no idea what I was talking about. Later, I found this unbelievable since these two tours are widely advertised at all the tourist spots. The desk staff also could not recommend local restaurants (besides the pricey one attached to the hotel). They were very unhelpful. The day we left I asked about mailing some postcards and the desk lady gave them to the valet at the desk. Who knows if they'll actually be mailed. Convenient to the hotel are a Starbucks attached to the lobby that opens at 6 am. The only thing this hotel has going for it is it's location. But it was definitely not worth the expense. Pick a less expensive hotel further away and take the Metro. It's not difficult to use at all and there's lot of helpful posters and maps on the different routes.

The White House is about 4 blocks away and the American History and Natural History museums are about 6 blocks away. The nearest Metro stop is about 2 blocks away. Take that for the other DC sights and your legs and feet will thank you. Take a bus tour first off to get a feel for the city before you get too far along in your vacation.

We loved our 5 day stay at the Hamilton. It is nicely located about 5 blocks from the Mall, so was withing walking distance ... for us. Then we discovered it was a block away from the Metro subway and used that everyday which save us a lot of energy for the museums. We found some great resturants within walking distance and found the Hamilto's resturant very good eating too. Their Angus burgers are Delicious! The staff was very friendly and helpful. This resturant shows it's age in small ways, but nothing that bothered us. It is, however, one block from a firestation and tended to be noisy some nights due to sirens.

Upgrade?
Dapper Dan Oct 13, 2009
There are two clubs within ear shot of the hotel on 14th and K streets, so if you stay the weekend, don't think you are ... getting an upgrade when they can move you to the 8th floor, with a view of the park. They didn't tell us the view came with our own spots lights, car alarms, police sirens, drunk loud people, obnoxious sports cars revving their engines at the 3am club close time, ... I guess the clubs keep the McPherson Park pretty clear of homeless people though. They know better that they wouldn't get any sleep if they slept there...

The hotel is located in a spot convenient to visitor attractions. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The ... restaurant staff was friendly and helpful; the valet staff was very nice, too. The front desk staff, however, weren't very nice; no one smiled. They did their job, but without the 'personal touch'. Then there was an error on my bill and they were a bit rude about it, as though I had somehow created the problem. There are many other similarly priced hotels in the area, and I think that I'll try another place.

My girlfriend and I decided to take a long weekend in DC to visit the White House, Capitol, Monuments, and Museums. We chose ... the Hamilton because of its location and price. We ended up being very happy with our choice. We arrived 3 hours before their stated check-in, but they were able to check us in early. Our room was clean and filled with all the necessities. Though it was a tad small, the room adequately fit the two of us. The front desk was able to give us directions numerous times. They did have a concierge on staff, but he was only available during limited hours of the day and we never got the chance to speak with him. Unfortunately, the front desk wasn't helpful in choosing restaurants but they were always friendly and at least tried to assist us. The cleaning staff was also top notch. The location was amazing. The White House was about 4-5 blocks away. The Metro station to get to the Capitol and the Smithsonian Museums was a block away, and the Circulator Bus which we took to have dinner in Georgetown had a stop right across the street. The hotel offered us an extended check-out (2 hours) and 50% off their restaurant's breakfast for signing up for their mailing list. The extended check out was nice and the breakfast in their restaurant was very good but still pricey after the discount. All and all the price, location, friendly staff, etc. makes the Hamilton a great value. For 2 people, the small room can definatly be overlooked for all of this hotel's positives. I highly recommend. Note - The hotel has a Starbucks in the lobby which was nice and a gym which I did not see or use. No pool.

Trip was a special trip, I proposed to my gf and we did some sight seeing to all of the memorials, museums, etc, so we wanted ... to be close to everything. The hotel was very close to all sites and is easily accessible to the Metro (McPherson Square) station. It is about 5 blocks away from the White House and within walking distance to the memorials and monument. The staff was very friendly and helpful, loved the bar and restaurant. Food at the restaurant was surprisingly good compared to other hotels. The trip overall was great and we were pleased with the hotel, service, etc especially for the price we paid (packaged with flight through Orbitz) Rooms were a little smaller than expected but were clean. The size was no big deal because we didn't spend much time in the room anyway.

The grandeur of Washington D.C.
Single Traveler to D.C. Sep 14, 2009
This was my first trip sponsored by Orbitz. Everything was set up and processed perfectly. Just like I expected! The hotel ... was very clean, staff very accommodating and it was an excellent location. After I completed my tours, I just walked to some of the places...The Ford Theatre, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Holocaust Museum, Smithsonian Museums. I could come and go without feeling like a stranger in the town. I thought my room could have been a little cooler at night, but I was so tired from my day of looking at our Capitol City, that I just fell asleep. What would have made my stay more enjoyable was if I had more money to spend!!!!! I wanted to see Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, DC at Night, etc. The Crowne Plaza restaurant had very tasty entrees, amicable and helpful attendants. I had a great time!!!! I would recommend this hotel to other guests. I would also recommend that they book their entire trip through Orbitz. Your calls about the flight, update of the flight information was just the extras that put the "cherry" on top! My itinerary was planned very well and I was able to execute it without any problems whatsoever. It gave me information on how to set-up my return to the Airport, Wow! I can't say enough about the how Orbitz made my trip a sensation and how well it went. It felt as though I had an Travel Agent/Administrative Assistant with me. Thank You!!!!

The local transportation is excellent! Take lots of $1 bills though. It's fast and often. The Union Station has some very nice stores for shopping. I especially liked Chicos, White & Black & Heydari. Very nice clothing lines. Also shops like H&M have excellent prices and fashionable attire. The Au Bon Pain shop(not sure if I have the name correct), at the Union Station, was the best place for me to get a snack or breakfast because it carried a variety of foods, reasonably priced, even for those of us dieting.
