A friendly budget hotel
Zahrinka Nov 11, 2009
I needed cheap accommodation for one night and i was booking one day ahead... Coqui Inn was the cheapest, I have nothing bad ... to say about the hotel, the room was simple but clean and quiet, the staff was super friendly and helpful..I did not have time or opportunity to check their facilities...the location is good when u r coming from the airport, getting to Old San Juan takes a little while if u don't want to take a cab - there is no timetable for the buses, it comes once half an hour or so and takes about 40 minutes to get there...I am a budget traveller so for me was this hotel perfect...later on I stayed at a guesthouse right in Old San Juan for $35, it is not listed anywhere online - it's called Fortaleza Guesthouse on the corner of Fortaleza and Tanca Street, I loved it for the location an price, you get your on room, wireless internet, you can use the kitchen, only restrooms are for the whole floor...

you can get from the airport to Isla Verde or Old San Juan by bus, each ride is 75 cents, you just need to give yourself enough time, there is no timetable for the buses and you have to change bus once...usualy you wait for the bus at least half an hour...

Worst hotel in the WORLD
World Traveller Mar 19, 2009
I am a very experienced international traveller, especially after I retired in 1999: Continental Platinum flyer 7 years in a ... row; 35 cruises since 2004, etc. I've travelled to about 65 different countries in all the continents except Antartica. I can say categorically Hotel Coqui is the worst hotel I've ever stayed, bar none. I booked the hotel for only one reason: to stay there waiting for the morning flight back to the US on Continental Airlines (of which I am an Elite Frequent Flyer), which was too early for the cruiseship arrival back to San Juan. The hotel description sounded great: in Old San Juan, close to the airport, beach, shopping, etc., and the rate of $77 per night was low (for San Juan hotels). Having been on a cruise for 14 days and having been to San Juan several times before, we expected merely a hotel to rest for a day (from noon to the flight departure at 7:45 am the next day). We had pre-paid for the room through Orbit booking, and it was a literal nightmare from the time we arrived at the hotel at 10:30 am to the time we departed at 5 am the next morning. The manager said a room was available but it wasn't cleaned yet, and we sat in the lobby to wait for the room to be cleaned. I saw the cleaning maid finished cleaning two rooms and asked why ours weren't ready, and the manager said those rooms were booked directly by clients of the hotel and were promised for their early arrival. After a wait for an hour and a half, with the prospects of 3 more hours of wait (check-in clerk said 3 pm is the official check-in time) when I saw the cleaning ladies had already left for other Coqui hotels in the same block, I was ready to forfeit my one-night Orbit pre-paid amount ($77 plus tax) to stay in one of the 5 Hilton hotels in San Juan for which I am a Diamond member, at a nightly rate of slightly more than double the Coqui hotel rate. When I asked the manger whether I can use the 800 toll-free number to call the USA or use an international area-code number, he said the 800 number will work and I can use the pay phone down the street. When he saw me talking to someone on my cell phone, he thought I was calling Orbit to complain, and within TWO minutes told me the room I was waiting for was ready -- apparently ever since we arrived -- because it WAS already cleaned and the maids could not possibly have cleaned it since we arrived because the room was about 20 feet from where we sat and I could see they were cleaning other rooms, but not that one! So, that was a very mysterious and unpleasant start. I think the manager was expecting some kind of bribe from us to check in before 3 pm because we had booked the hotel through Orbit, and they had already gotten my money. The hotel had NO facilities (which we didn't expect anyway, or mind). The room was about half the size of the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed. It was right off the lobby, 20 feet from the front desk, and the waiting sofa on which we sat, and could SEE and HEAR everything ongoing in the lobby, the small bar, and pin-ball playing room. The NOISE of doors banging, people talking, drinking, and arguing went on the ENTIRE night, making it impossible for us to sleep. These should give you some idea WHY the hotel got the ratings I gave -- I HOPE no one will EVER book that hotel because it is absolutely the worst hotel I've ever stayed. I would NOT stay there ever again even if the rate is $10 a night (for which I have stayed in some hotels in the 3rd world locations, such as Cozumel and other countries in the Yucatan) or even if the rooms are FREE! The cheapest and next worst room/hotel I've ever stayed would seem like a $800 a night room (I've stayed in many such in the USA, as well as in London, Rome, Paris, Hong Kong, and elsewhere) compared to the $77 room in the Coqui hotel. These comments are made to give some credibility to my experience and rating, based on FACTUAL events of my one-night stay on March 16, 2009. The o...

Great staff, terrible stay
Attallah Oct 6, 2008
The Coqui Inn is a small hotel very clost to the San Juan airport. The staff was very friendly but the hotel itself was ... horrible. They did not have towels or washcloths (they should let you know this info in advanced). Our sheets were dirty when we arrived. We requested that they be changed but the staff did not have any clean sheets available. This hotel is about 2 miles from the beach (a long walk). I will say that the staff was very friendly and kind.
