This is a very basic hotel - no elevator, small rooms, no frills. But the staff was friendly and helfpul and our room was ... clean, well-maintained, good A/C-heat unit and cable TV. Rooms in back are on alley and there was some noise from next-door restaurant kitchen and 2x/week 5:30 am trash pickup. But the hotel itself was quiet. Best part is that it's one block from Red Line train stop and a $10/day supervised parking lot. Also fun to be right in Chinatown - great food everywhere. One comment said the hotel accepts cash only but they take all major credit cards. Would stay here again.

I stayed at the hotel for two nights. I was in Chicago for the Print 09 expo at McCormick Place and this hotel was a good ... location. It's good for the budget-minded traveler. It was very close to the subway station, so going to downtown Chicago was quick and easy. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast but there are two bakeries near the hotel where you can get a bite to eat. There's also a White Castle a few blocks down on Cermak. The hotel has a lounge with free coffee, a microwave, a fridge, and a computer with internet access. I had my laptop with me, so I used the free wi-fi in the hotel. The hotel has three floors with no elevator, so this wouldn't be a good place to stay if you have a lot of bags as you would have to carry them up the stairs.

The hotel is in the center of Chinatown with lots of excellent restaurants and bakeries within one block. You can buy breakfast for a couple of dollars at the bakeries in the morning; its freshly baked that morning and delicious.

Things to know before you go
Elle Jul 27, 2009
The Chinatown hotel has a good location. As a Chicago native, I can say it is close to public transportation lines that take ... you easily to downtown Chicago. However, parking is metered and on the street. If you arrive during peak times (dinner, middle of the day)it may be difficult to find parking. In the hotel, the lobby was clean and the staff seemed willing to help, though some at the front desk spoke with heavy accents. The hotel has no elevator. We were on the fourth floor. The room had an air conditioning unit and a heater. The duct work was in the room but this seemed not work. The television got only channels with broadcasts in Chinese. There was no lamp, iron, alarm clock or wash cloths and one of the bath towels had hair on it. I traveled with my husband and we had a room with 2 twin beds. My husband's feet hung over the edge (he is 6'). Though extremely affordable for Chicago, I would absolutely never stay here again.

Good hotel, great location, great price
Business Traveler Jul 15, 2009
The hotel is very basic but clean and comfortable. Keep in mind that it has no elevator, so you have to carry your luggage ... upstairs. The staff is very nice and very accommodating. It is about a 15 minute walk to the convention center and 2 blocks from the CTA train which allows for easy and cheap transportation to the airport. It is in the middle of Chinatown, and there are many good and budget friendly restaurants within walking distance. The neighborhood seems very safe at night. I would definitely stay there again.

Chinatown Hotel - Chicago
Librarian Jul 13, 2009
This hotel was a good value and the staff provided good service. The room was very clean, but dingy, dinged furniture, worn ... carpet etc. The location was great for walking to McCormick Place, which is where my meeting was. I also felt very safe. Not a lot of amenities, but made sense for the price. There was ice, and a pop machine - but it became sold out 1/2 way through my visit. Wireless Internet access was great - no hassle and great quick connection. It was hard to get a taxi.

Hawkeye Jun 15, 2009
We were just looking for a cheap place to sleep after a concert in Soldier Field. We were on the fourth floor with no ... elevator. The rooms were very tiny. Only vending machine was a soda machine. We went out of room to see if we could find something to eat and we had about 6 or 7 young adults hanging out in the stairwell. They [...] all looked quite out of it. We got what we wanted a place to sleep. I would never go back and would definately never bring children their. Not very classy. They should not be listed on a site like this because they definately don't advertise what they give.

Disgusting Experience/Chinatown Hotel
Physician Jun 9, 2009
This was the most disgusting hotel I have stayed in in the past 25 years (since a college road-trip to Tijuana and a stay in ... a cheap hotel overlooking the TJ city jail). Chinatown Hotel was very small room (9x11 ft). Everything was filthy. Walls had stains, running down them. I'm not sure what fluid this was, bodily or otherwise. Trails of little ants in the room. Dimly lit. Carpet filthy with stains and funk. I actually laid down newspaper and bought some cleaning supplies. I had all my clothes dry cleaned after leaving to rid the funk. Heat was by a space heater, AC by in wall unit. The fact that there is no elevator, or the low cost, should have been a hint to the tenement quality of this flop house. But I was relying on the reviews and web recommendations. Very disappointing in both. I was however pleasantly surprised that there were not prostitutes frequenting the place, but I suspect it was because it was simply below their standards. Doors were thin and locks very flimsy. I would not have stayed here with wife or kids, or certainly not let them stay alone. I booked and prepaid a week. After the 4th night, I couldn't stand it any more, and left early, moving to a nice clean normal room at a hotel near the convention center. I didn't ask for refund. I was just happy to get out ASAP. I should also point out, I have raised livestock and am not particularly squeamish or afraid of dirt, but this was disgusting. I would not stay here for FREE.

Dirty, small and broken beds.
Conference Accomodation Seeker Jun 3, 2009
You get what you pay for here- a cheap hotel at a cheap price. I stayed here during a 5 day conference at the McCormick ... Center. The rooms were very small, carpeting had stains throughout, scuff marks all over the walls, rusty metal closet doors, bed covers and blankets were stained- the sheets seemed clean enough. When sitting on the bed- the bed buckled and the headboard caved in on the bed. I had to push the bed tightly against the wall to keep the headboard from falling each and every time. The bathroom was fairly large and quite clean with tile floors & a clean tiled shower. No surface area to place toiletries. The towel rack fell apart when a hand towel was placed on it. The internet sporadically worked throughout the day. The immediate area within Chinatown is relatively safe- but a 5 minute walk east towards the McCormick center is definitely not a safe place to be at night. The nearby bus stop (bus 21) quickly takes you to the McCormick center for only $2.25, a cab is about $5.00. The bus or a cab is a much better alternative than trekking through a modest gauntlet of beggars, drunks and drug dealers (not as bad during the week) along the way. The staff was friendly but seemed to have constant computer problems (perhaps related to the sporadic internet connection). I recommend avoiding the free coffee altogether- both times it tasted old and burnt. No elevators. Not a problem for carry on bags but may be problematic for large luggage items to be carried up 3 floors on a narrow staircase.

WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!

This was so awful! I literally walked in, got my key, looked at the room, and left! Orbitz would not refund my money which ... I found to be extremely unprofessional. It's in a VERY unsafe area. Everyone from Chicago could not believe Orbitz even had this hotel on their site. I will no longer be using Orbitz.

Good enough for the price.
JROK May 20, 2009
I didn't expect much at this price and didn't get it, but it works for someone looking for a cheap place to sleep in a ... convenient location. Just a couple blocks from the red line for convenient access to downtown and the airports. Walking distance to McCormick (20 minutes). Rooms are very small, no cable, cheap towels and linens, no iron or coffee in room, no elevator. Friendly staff and quiet location. If you can deal with roughing it a little bit, it beats paying 2 or 3 times as much to stay downtown in a posh property with all the amenities.

Not the Hilton, but...
Becca May 9, 2009
Look, you weren't expecting the Hilton at this price, were you? Prior reviews left me with fairly accurate expectations, but ... here are the details. Pluses: -Dirt cheap. -Very near red line El-station--easy to get downtown. -Decent neighborhood near McCormick Place (but the walk's about a half-mile, so bring comfortable shoes) -Good food in Chinatown. -Large room downstairs with refrigerator and microwave, so you can save tonight's leftovers for tomorrow's lunch/dinner. Minuses: -No helpful concierge, just a very young clerk whose English is not the best. -Doesn't take Amex. Visa/Master/cash only. -No elevators. Definitely not wheelchair-accessible. Thankfully, it's only a four-story hotel, but don't even think it if you can't lug your bag up a flight or two of stairs. -No bathtubs, just shower stalls. -Worn, stained carpeting that's needed replacing since the Reagan administration.

The hotel is old and small. Our room was very small with a fairly large bathroom. Two single beds for my wife and I which I ... wish had been a queen instead. No elevators. Not the best place to stay, but given the alternative of spending over twice as much in a well-known chain, it was acceptable. Abundant, good eating places nearby and a 6-block walk to McCormick Place where I attended meetings. Parking 2 blocks away for $9 a night.

This Hotel Is A Pit Never Stay Here!!!!
Donald Oct 17, 2008
The China Hotel SRO in Chicago is a PIT... I absolutely would not stay under here unless you a desperate and cannot fiond a ... room anywhere else in town...even then I would go to the suburbs. This Hotel is dirty, nasty carpets, needs paint everywhere, moldy showers, horrible rooms, no amenities, no parking besides street side, I even questioned wether they cleaned the sheets...broken fixtures in the two rooms I tried. There staff barely speaks any English. This is a seriously nasty hotel do not stay here.
