Great location, great stay!!
Jenn Nov 18, 2009
We are a 20-something couple from NYC and were looking to get away, relax, and see some sights. This vacation had it all! The ... Catalonia Royal Tulum was GORGEOUS - think jungle theme (literally, walkway between rooms, lobby, and pool/beach is a path surrounded by lush greens and palm trees), beautiful beach with its own mini reef to explore, and top notch pool/relaxation areas. The room was nice and clean, nothing spectacular but certainly comfortable. The all-inclusive system was somewhat unique in that the various restaurants did not require reservations - they simply opened up two or three of the theme restaurants every night and we were allowed to go to whichever one we wanted. They were all great - we especially loved the Tapas Lounge, which was outside on a patio and had its own drink menu. Meals were always good, as were the drinks, although nightlife tended to die out exceptionally early at the hotel (about 10pm would find all of the bars empty). Not a problem if you plan on either laying low or heading out of the hotel at night, but might have been nice to see a few more people out and about. The hotel also has its own free transportation to Playa del Carmen, which is an adorable beach town with restaurants, bars, and shops. The bus is more for the dinner crowd -leaves at 6 and picks you up at 11 - but if you want to stay late and hit the bar scene there are plenty of cabs. By way of partying, I highly recommend talking to Guillermo, the rep at the hotel, to arrange tix and rides to Coco Bongo, an open bar and vegas-style show with dancing and other craziness. The hotel is also close to lots of other touristy fun and offers a concierge desk with various reps from different agencies depending on the day. We're not really tour people but heard others enjoying that option.

The Collectivo, a public transit van system, stops directly across the street from the hotel. For about $2 per person USD, this will take you to the Mayan ruins in Tulum, Xel Ha, or other popular tourist spots along that route. It is safe, easy, and MUCH cheaper than taking a cab or renting a car

We wanted a quiet, beautiful place to enjoy our time together and rest. The beach was postcard perfect and the staff and ... food were superb. We used the snorkel equipment and kayaks and took advantage of the free catamaran ride - all included in the package price. We ate different food everyday and tried every fruity drink on the menu - some of the best mojitos and margaritas we have ever had. Magically, every night the lounge chairs at the pool and beach were straightened and the area was cleaned, so that you walked into a beautiful, clean area every morning. The cool down area was fabulous - we watched the stars one night from the comfy seats. The beds were hard and room service was nothing to brag about, but the staff and beautiful walking path through the jungle made you forget any issues immediately. We will definitely go back.

Great hotel on beautiful beach!
Katie Nov 9, 2009
My boyfriend and I just returned from a fantastic 10 days at the Royal Catalonia Tulum. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a ... refreshing beverage and cold towel which helped with the adjustment to the heat. Initially, we booked the standard hotel room. The room provided to us had two hard, uncomfortable double beds, even though we requested a king. We decided to pay for an upgrade to a honeymoon suite ($25/person/day). In my opinion, it was worth the money, the room was beautiful with a very comfortable king sized bed. The hotel is beautiful, clean, well maintained with friendly, helpful staff. I can not even being to describe the beautiful the white sand beach and turquoise water. I've traveled a lot throughout the Caribbean and I have to say that this is the nicest beach I have been to. We enjoyed ourselves tremendously during our stay. If there is a drawback to this resort, I'd have to say there is a shortage of evening entertainment. We left with fond memories of our time in Mexico, spoiled only by one minor incident while leaving the resort. The car that we had hired to provided us round trip transportation to and from the airport, did not return to pick us up. Not worried because we allowed ourselves ample time to return to the airport, we made inquires with the bell boy for taxi services. A taxi was called and we were quickly seated inside. The bell boy was very insistent that we pay the taxi driver up front. My boyfriend responded that we'll pay when we arrive at the airport. The bell boy wouldn't take no for an answer and wouldn't put the lid down on the trunk until we paid the driver. In frustration, we finally paid the driver because it was obvious that we weren't going to get anywhere until the driver was paid. As some sort of "departure tax fee" the bell boy required that the driver give him $20 of the $70 we had just given.

What a great experience! The resort was beautiful and in a jungle type setting so take bug spray. The double room had ... ample space for three adults and bathrooms were very roomy. Beds are on the hard side. The beach was fantastic with great snorkeling. Restaurants and food service are above average offering buffet style breakfast and lunch and ala carte restaurant choices for dinner.

CRT exceeded our expectations
provobum Oct 19, 2009
Catalonia Royal Tulum exceeded our expectations in a big way. Considering what we paid for an all-inclusive experience here, ... we figured it would be run down, not well taken care of and didn't expect much in the way of service. We couldn't have been more wrong. The room was basic and comfortable, but with marble and granite everywhere. Housekeeping did an excellent job and stocked the refrigerator daily with exactly what we asked for. Room service was fantastic and even brought us sandwiches at 1:00 AM after long evenings of wobbly pops. Food was excellent, though not really what most people consider 5 star, but we certainly never went hungry. The thing that impressed us most, however, was the desire of the staff to please us. No matter what we wanted they did their best to deliver. The entertainment staff rocked. They did an excellent job getting you involved in activities without hounding you. Whether it was Aqua Gym, volleyball, water polo or even pool bingo they made it look like (and it was) so much fun that you just had to participate. They made you feel as though you were their friend and treated you as such. The only drawback that we could see would be if you were to visit during peak season. We got the feeling that it might be quite crowded at that time. We are used to Turks and Caicos where it is never crowded. Off season at CRT was pretty much what peak at TCI would be. The number one thing we look for in a tropical vacation is the beach/water and the stretch along CRT is beautiful and what we would consider a world-class beach. Overall, it is an impecably kept facility and we enjoyed it enough that we are planning to return next year in late summer or early fall. Almost forgot - the pool is also amazing and extremely clean.

Absolute Paradise!!!
Beach Lover Oct 18, 2009
This was our first time in Riviera Maya so we didn't know what to expect. We didn't book travel arrangements to the hotel ... before hand and were hesitant at first about the prices and travel time. It is about an hour away from the airport and we paid around $70 a per person. It was well worth it though. The moment we walked into the lobby, it was just beautiful. We were greeted with fresh cold champagne spritzers and cold towels to cool down with. Our room wasn't ready since we got there before check in time, but we didn't mind at all...we went straight to the pool area to change and headed to the restaurant for lunch. Amazing food, so much variety, breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, everything was just more than we expected. Alcoholic drinks were also quite good, many different frozen cocktails to choose from while lounging at the pool. Just ask for a certain liquor you prefer rather than the staff using whatever they choose. The beach, PARADISE, gorgeous white sand, CLEAR water, no rocks, no debris, nothing, just absolutely pure! The pool is HUGE, plenty of chairs. Entertainment staff is so much fun. They were funny with their cooking and drinking demonstrations, dancing, and water aerobics. My husband played volleyball and water sports and I did the aerobics and yogo. We were so pleased with the couples only theme, no children to disturb our much needed getaway from home. We couldn't have been happier with this pick. The moment we left, we couldn't stop talking about when we plan to return to the same exact spot! Thank you [...] for a great deal and accomdations...

We never left the hotel for food, all the restaurants were GREAT. We ate steak dinners most every night, cooked to perfection! Just take a look at the lobby sign to see which one is open for that day so you don't go a closed one by mistake. Lunch was always by the pool, amazing BUFFET, so much food, different everyday!!!

Super Hotel But Bad Airport Transport
10 yr anniversary vacationers Sep 26, 2009
This hotel was a shot in the dark for us and what a catch it was. We read all the reviews we could until we were tired of ... reading and then hoped for the best. What we got from this hotel was better than the best, it was AWSOME!!. You arrive to a beautiful very open entrance and a super staff who serves you champagne on arrival. Our luggage arrived at our room before us. Our walk to the room was a tropical rainforest with fish rivers to walk over and iguana's everywhere, just super great. We went on to adventure through the walking paths and arrived at a fabulous pool right at the beach with the most private area ever. You can not go wrong with this hotel they go over and above what you expect. It was our 10yr anniversary and they surprised us by decorating our door. After arriving inside there was rose petals on the floor a bottle of champange and chocolate covered strawberries. Everyday you arrive to a new display on your bed with fresh flowers even tucked in your curtains. The staff is super and the food is awsome. Try the Jumbo crab cakes. You will love this place and have the best vacation of your life....

We stayed at the CRT from 09/12 through 09/21 and had an excellent time. The staff were incrediable very friendly and ... helpfull. Check in was a breeze check out was fast. The resort has the best beach in the Cancun area with plenty of clean white sand or you can choose to sit at the pool. The entertainment staff involved themselves with the guest and kept us busy all week they even knew most everyones name on the second day. We met several couple from around the world and had just a super time. Any one who does not like this resort will not like any other place. I was worried about the food before we wend but it turned out to be great also.

CRT is the place to be.
Jamerican Sep 14, 2009
We took a spur of the moment trip to the CRT for a week in August and the place was fantastic. The beach is absolutely ... beautiful to look at and to walk on, in and out of the water. Plenty of palapas if you want to be out of the sun. Snorkeling was better to the north and also out where the catamaran anchors. We never went to the pool for more than a quick dip and then back to the beach or "cool" tub, but there were always plenty of loungers there. The walk to the beach took no time at all and checking out the flora and fauna was an adventure. Catty, the beach dog, was the sweetest girl; be sure to give her fresh water if you see her. We took dog treats but they got confiscated at the airport after we got the green light but before going out the door. She followed us almost the whole way to building 2 one night, but then she got caught by security. The rooms are basic but are very nice and clean, we didn't see anything more than the occasional mosquito in it. The bed wasn't too hard for us and we ordered down pillows from the pillow menu. The shower is quite large. Our room was cleaned everyday and our refrigerator was restocked with our requests and we had turn down service in the evenings. The A/C kept the room nice and cool. We enjoyed the food and never went hungry and we especially liked the no reservation system and that my husband could wear shorts and sandals to all of the ala carts. They have the best policy and all the other comparable hotels in the area should change to that. We will be returning to the CRT next year. In fact, if we hadn't already booked our Oct. trip last Feb. at another resort the next beach up, we would have booked the CRT again. We were in Tulum in May so we never left the resort this trip, but the CRT does have a shuttle to Playa which is a nice perk We never had a wait getting bar service and waitresses walk around the beach and pool all day, they also bring fruit skewers, which is another nice touch. The red house wine was decent enough. The Tapas with the live music was great except for the mosquitoes. My SIL loved it so we went there more than once, but got eaten up even with bug spray. All in all this was one of our best and most relaxing vacations and I can't wait to go again.

Very Relaxing Trip to CRT
AI First Timers Sep 13, 2009
We were at the CRT for a week simply to relax, and the hotel certainly met this objective! We had never stayed at an all ... inclusive before, and it was pretty much what we expected. The food for breakfast/lunch was good, not great, and the dinners were the same, with the exception of the Royal Grill steakhouse, which was excellent. The service was good everywhere except the beach bar, where the bar staff could appear uninterested. The room staff, wait staff, and spa staff were very attentive, as was the staff who delivered drinks on the beach. The activities were pretty good, not very many people wanted to participate so there were not a ton of activities. The shows were fine, the staff put a lot of effort into them, and they were probably the quality of a high school play. The beach is simply gorgeous. This time of the year the "towel game" was not so bad, anytime of the day there were plenty of chairs at the beach, but maybe not all in the shade. Not a problem for us. The pool and "cool tubs" are also amazing. These features really puts the hotel is a class of its own! If you can get a room nearest the beach it is worth it. Note: This hotel would be a bad choice for those with mobility problems due to its long walks. We will return if we get another great deal, otherwise we might try a larger AI just for a new experience. We did love the adults only and that would be another factor pushing us to return to CRT.

Scorpio Girl Sep 7, 2009
Hotel staff was very friendly and attentive. The beach is absolutely beautiful. There is plenty to do at the hotel if you ... don't feel like venturing out. We rented a car for a $190.00 for an entire week which was nice because we went to Playa del Carmen and Chichen Itza without having to pay for transportation.. we left a $600 cash deposit and had no problem with getting that money back. It isn't a 5 star hotel but we had absolutely no complaints. Don't forget insect repellent.. the mosquitos do come out at night and I learned that very quick, you don't need to put it on during the day. The food was pretty good.. once my plate was served a little cold and we didn't enjoy the Italian restaurant too much.. I also recommend getting to the restaurants fairly early.. service seems to be better and they seem to run out of certain things towards the end of the meal time. I would definitely come back to this hotel.

The best restaurant is Centenario - the Mexican food. Truly fantastic all around. The terrace restaurant has the coolest ambiance - but bring mosuito repellant as they are vicious.

There is a little hut on the beach and there is a young man there named [...]. He sells jewelry, wraps, bags, hats, everything. He's got great prices too! Be sure you stop in and see him. He will come by the resort but is only allowed to pass through a few times per day. They also sell silver and sun glasses.

Take a private transfer or taxi to this resort. It is about and hour and 10 min. ride from the airport, but you pass alot of the other resort entrances along the way and time goes quickly. The resort is about 20 mins. south of Playa if you want to party or shop. Easy taxi ride or they have a shuttle at the hotel that leaves at 6 PM and returns at 11 PM

You can take an $8 per person bus trip (ADO buses I think, they are airconditioned and nice, not the public buses!)from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen and then a $15 taxi ride to the hotel. The bus took about an 1:15 and then the taxi ride is another 20 minutes or so. It was a $70 taxi ride from the hotel to the airport. The porter who took our bags from our room to the front desk set it up. When we were leaving we met the taxi and paid the driver and then the driver most likely gave the porter a cut. If I was doing it again I would also buy the return bus ticket from playa for the day that you leave so that you have a plan. You can get from this hotel to the airport and back for under $70.

This hotel is really only for those who wish for a very quiet time. Entertainment was poor.

The steak restaurant by the pool (also the site of the lunch buffet) blew the other restaurants out of the water. Try the others if you like, but eat here at least twice!

Once you arrive to Cancun Airport and go through customs. You will be approach by many folks dressed in tan color clothing. Ignore them. They have all types of pitchs to get your attention to sell you a timeshare. The grayline Taxi booth right before you exit the airport wanted to charge me to Akumel 150 dollars. Just walk out. there are other Taxis there. I had someone offer me a taxi ride for 120 dollars, but just approach the Grayline guy with a clip board. I got it for 100 dollars. You can take a bus for 100 dollars but they stop on a few hotels down the way. Like Vegas and adds another 45 minutes I hear. Coming back it was only 60 dollars and I gave the guy a 10 dollar tip. We hired him to take us to tolum and he waited for us for 40 bucks.

Make sure to catch the cocktail lesson. 11am on sunday i think. The 2 instructors drink about a bottle of REAL tequila during the lesson and are hysterical.
