All and all, great place to stay....
CGP Nov 9, 2009
Great Hotel, beautiful location and easy to get to attractions. Walking distance to the beach (a few hundred feet). The only ... complaint, two actually, there is only one elevator and it is VERY slow; if the hotel was any busier it'd be a nightmare using it, and no fresh hot coffee in the lobby in the morning. Other than those, great place!

The air conditioner was extreamly loud but maybe it was supposed to be like that to try to drown out the people you could ... hear in the next room and also the ones that you could hear waiting for the elevator. The hotel was in a nice location and the resturant down stairs was surprisingly very good.

Do not go to Cafe Eleven unless you want to pay people to be rude to you. Venture elsewhere-especially Beachcomber for lunch, Scarlet O'Harra's and Hurricane Patty's for dinner.

great romantic getaway!
SuperSatisfied Oct 13, 2009
My boyfriend and I wanted a nice romantic getaway for the Columbus Day weekend. We liked the pictures of the Castillo Real ... and it looked like the perfect location. It looked exactly like the pictures and the location was GREAT! (if you want to be by the beach-but its only 10 minutes from downtown). We definitely got the romantic getaway we were looking for and we will definitely return to this hotel if we go back to St. Augustine! ROOM: We chose the king bed with the jacuzzi and it was worth every penny! The jacuzzi is perfect for two people and was very relaxing after a long day of site-seeing and hanging out at the beach. It was very clean. And THE BED WAS HEAVEN!!!! I had read tons of reviews that mentioned how awesome the beds were and they were all right! We slept great. The shower was nice and big (great for two people)-tile from floor to ceiling. A little more water pressure would've been nice, but it wasn't bad. Overall, good size, very clean, GET THE JACUZZI ROOM if you are with a significant other! LOCATION: Just across the Lion's bridge, we were 10 minutes from downtown and a short block's walk from the beach. We couldn't ask for a better location. Downtown has tons of Bed & Breakfast places (which are adorable) but its so crowded downtown. We loved being by the ocean and went for a romantic walk on the beach one night (a 2 minute walk from our hotel). FOOD: The restaurant at the hotel is phenomenal! Expensive, but very wonderful. Portions are huge, so we had leftovers, but we stored them in the fridge in our room and put them in the microwave the next day for lunch. There is no room service at the hotel, but we didn't mind. Cafe Eleven was across the street and I'd read great reviews about their breakfast. The food was pretty good, but the people were RUDE!!! My boyfriend and I are very friendly, easy going and laid back and there was NO REASON for the employees at Cafe Eleven to be so rude to us. I work in customer service and this place definitely doesn't cut it for me. I would rather spend my money at a restaurant where the people actually act like they APPRECIATE your business and aren't annoyed that you came to eat there. We loved Scarlet O'Harra's (downtown-get the blackened salmon!), Hurricane Patty's (off Lewis St.-a little hard to find-GREAT STAFF!), Beachcomber (on the beach-super casual-great burgers-VERY FRIENDLY PEOPLE), and the A1A pub (great for live music/drinks at night). We ate at Hurricane Patty's one night and I'd accidentally forgotten my rings in the bathroom. I didn't realize until later that night, but we called the next morning and Tammy had them waiting for me! First, I couldn't believe someone actually turned them in, and second, that the employees wouldn't keep them! We also ate at O'Steen's for lunch. Great food (but its all fried and we don't usually eat fried), but it is CASH ONLY and they have NO ALCOHOL. Just a heads up. All the old local people love it. HOTEL STAFF: Everyone was very friendly at the Castillo Real. The only thing I could complain about was that our fridge wasn't very cold and when we called the front desk about it, she said the maintenance man had just left and there would be another one coming on in 15 minutes and she would have him call us about it. We didn't receive a call back but were too tired to mess with it. Our leftovers were still good the next day, so everything worked out. OVERALL: We had a wonderful experience here and this is definitely our favorite hotel we've ever stayed at. If you want a classy, quiet, romantic vacation, this is definitely the place for you! =)

I have to say...my husband and I were very impressed with Castillo Real. The hotel was beautiful. The service was great. The ... rooms were large and I loved the way they decorated the bathroom. The shower was huge. All of this for a great low price. We were very pleasantly surprised. We plan to stay there again and our friends that visited plan to stay there as well in the future.

This was a one night stay so we could attend a concert at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. Hotel is about two miles from the ... amphitheatre. It would be a walkable distance, easy on a bicycle, and a very short drive. Very clean spacious rooms. Quiet. Good breakfast across the street at Cafe 11. Very short walk to the beach

Hotel check in was good. Outside very nice, decorative building, grounds and pool nice, clean & quiet. Lobby, hallways and ... restaurant nicely decorated and clean. Room large, bathroom, vanity area large and clean. Only negative is it is not oceanfront, there is a row of multi-level homes/apartments between hotel and ocean. There is a public walkway to beach on either side of hotel. You cannot look out and see ocean at all, so if you are wanting beachfront it is not. It is a very nice hotel for the price.

We were visiting the area for our son's school trip, and it was so nice to come to a place that was so like the pictures on ... the internet. The front desk were extremely knowlegable about the area and were more than happy to take the time with us.The hotel was very clean. The restaurant was a little pricey, but over all was one of our more satisfying stays in hotels. We will definetly be back!

The haunted ghost tour we thought was really good.We did the strolling one and you really got to see the history about how the town came to be and a little more... There was a power problem on the lines and it blew the pump on the jacuzzi. i would have been happier if there was some kind ... of compensation for that...even just a late check-out or anything. The jacuzzi is one thing I come for at that hotel. The rooms have bad lighting...way to dark. All else is very good and I am a repeat vistor and will continue to be. It's a lovely place and location. Visit cafee 11 across the street for good food!

Used to be Really Good
Buckwheatalfalfa Apr 14, 2009
Even though I have stayed at the Castillo Real on many previous occasions, it is obvious that at some point they have stopped ... maintaining the hotel to the same previous standards. The carpet in the elevator is very worn and remained dirty from the first day until the last four days later. It is also apparent that they are unable to find sheets that properly fit their king sized beds as the sheets began to come off the corners almost immediately after getting into bed. By the morning, the sheet was completely off the bed on every day. To top it all off, the usually very pleasant and friendly staff treated us like we were checking into a jail. Management is obviously missing something. Very disappointing stay this time, not sure I will be back.

The hotel was beautiful and the restaurant served excellent food. The only complaint would be that the front desk staff was ... a bit uptight. They actually had the nerve to say to us that we did not pay a high enough rate for an upgrade, even though there was almost no one else in the hotel at that time.

Large, Clean Rooms
Simone Dec 30, 2008
The Castillo Real was a very nice hotel with large, beautifully decorated rooms. The beds were so comfortable, among the ... most comfortable I have experienced in a hotel. The bathroom and vanity area were equally large with beautiful granite countertops. The room also had a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker which was very convenient. While it was too cold to enjoy the beach while we were there it was only a short walk away, and downtown was only about a 6 minute drive. The location was excellent. Each morning we started out day with breakfast in the lobby restaurant and the food was always excellent. While my stay was overall excellent there were a few small things this location can do to bring it's service and ammenities up a notch. First, the batteries for our tv remote were being held in with tape, then the toilet handle did not work that well and if you did not jiggle the handle it would run continuously. Lastly, late one night we called the front desk and asked for extra pillows, a few minutes later the gentleman from the front desk arrived at our door with pillows and pillow cases, some assembly required. It would have also been great to have an in room safe. While all of our belongings were safe and everything was fine I would have felt more comfortable having this in our room. We were informed that there were safety deposit boxes avalialable by the front desk but we did not find this very convenient. In all these were very small things and did not cause any inconvenience for us, our stay was wonderful and I would definitely recommend this hotel.
