TheDuvalDisappointment Oct 23, 2009

I am a single 35 yr old professional who rarely travels. I went to this resort with my girlfriend. I have to say that the ... outside (grounds) of the hotel were very nice and clean. The inside was average and beds were uncomfortable. Customer service wasn't too great. For example, I purchased a $10 pina colada in a 8 oz cup and my girlfriend accidently spilled it immediately. They would not give us a "sympathy" free refill. I didn't know the resort was that hard-up over a $10 drink. Secondly, this place has ANTS everywhere inside. They even had us change rooms and they still were there but not as much as the first room. They explained that every hotel here has that problem. Really? This place couldn't be further from Duval St. and Mallory Square too. Metered parking, expensive parking lots, or cabs are the only way to get there unless you want to huff it 3 miles. This place was very average and I wouldn't stay here again.

Beautiful Hotel but forget the Service

Hotel is beautiful and restful. The staff tries to act like they cared and you were staying in a first class hotel but the ... actual service was no better then the Holiday Inn or Best Western. The good news is the Hotel is wonderful, the beach is great, and you are in Key West so no worries. Just do not expect the service to be at 5 star hotel level. It is at 2 star level at best.

AMAZING VACATION!!!

Sisters on Vacation!!! Aug 10, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

As soon as we walked in the hotel we were greeted at the door with excellent service! No waiting, bell service took our bags ... right to our room. Room was spotless and beautiful! The only thing about the room we didn't like was, we were 3 people in the room. I booked an Island view suite, and the room holds a king bed with a pull out sofa. The king bed was super comfy, but, the pull out sofa was like sleeping on a railroad track covered with a sheet. That was the ONLY thing we were unhappy about. Suites only have a king bed and pull out sofa, so, keep that in mind when booking. Pool area was awesome, it's a salt-water pool!!!! They have beach boys that are there to help you. Whether it be with chairs, towels, umbrellas, drinks, etc, you name it. They come around with drinks, ice pops, ice cold towels to cool down...these were nice surprises. That's what your $20 a day resort fees go towards...well worth it! Overall stay was awesome! Would def go back year after year!

NIce place, but not for long stays

DivingJAM Jul 27, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

After staying at many Key West hotels as well as multiple Waldorf/Hilton hotels...this was my first time at this hotel. And ... in short, a few things were bothersome...like sparse room decor, little clothing storage space, a small bathroom, not acoustically private from neighbors, and most annoying for me was the seemingly short bed (i'm 5'11 and my feet hung off the end of the bed). Overall, the room wasn't a warm or a welcoming environment for our week long stay. Also somewhat annoying, the hotel does not provide any transportation to Duval or surrounding locations making walks in the heat intolerable and frequent cabs trips increasingly expensive. On the flip side, the pool, beach, and the ocean-side location are outstanding. Lastly, the food is average but unfortunately stops serving at 11pm (an inconvenient thing when out late on Duval). Having to do over again, I'd recommend staying at this hotel for no more than a 3 day weekend.

Beautiful Hotel, Excellent Location

Andrew Jul 26, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We stayed here for 4 nights, with plans to drink, visit Duval Street (which it is close too), check out the island, drink, ... relax, eat, drink, and enjoy a relaxing time together as a couple. It was wonderful. Although I recommend booking the room through the Hotel, and not through Orbitz, as the price was the same by booking direct, and it is definitely more flexible and point rewarding to book direct. I was not pleased with the lack of flexibility of working through Orbitz, especially since we didn't save any money with them.

Fine resort for a bargain price

BJW Jul 24, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Casa Marina is an excellent resort located very close to the southernmost point, approximately three blocks from the south ... end of Duval Street. We walked from the resort all the way to Mallory Square and back the first night without any problems, but it's quite a hike. The following nights we just drove up and parked on Whitehead street ($1.50 per hour, and you can pay with a credit card at one of many machines along the sidewalk). Casa Marina itself is a beautiful resort located directly on the beach. The rooms are clean, and well decorated in a modern style. There are two pools (no hot tub) at the resort that are both relatively large, and they don't seem to have a closing time. There are several hammocks strung between the palms along the beach as well. There is a large bar near the pools, but the prices are steep even by resort standards ($6.50 for a CAN of Heineken, and $10 - $12 for anything mixed). The shop in the lobby also sells some very overpriced drinks and snacks ($3.50 for a warm bottle of soda). There are plenty of other places in the area where you can buy anything you want for far less. Vallet parking is $20 per day, or you can self-park close by for $12 per day. The beach isn't too exciting being mostly rocky, but there is a nice pier with stairs into the water that offers a small area to swim, snorkel, or just have some fun time in the water. The only minor complaint I have about the resort would be that it can be a little noisy, but I believe if you have a room that is higher up (ours was on the first floor) it would be much quieter in the mornings (we like to sleep in late). All in all, this is a great place to stay and I would certainly stay there again.

the jet ski tour around key west is a must. harbor is located on the other side of the island, which makes walking from Casa Marina inconvenient. however, scooter and bike rentals are everywhere.

Mango Tango

Would recommend to a friend!

We enjoyed sitting under the palm trees on the beach. The daily free drink sample was a nice touch as were the cool towels ... in the afternoon at the pool. We took the bellman's advice and rented a scooter and really enjoyed tooling around town. Everyone was very friendly and the room was lovely.

Beautiful, but over-rated

Vince Jul 10, 2009

The hotel was aesthetically pleasing. The grounds were beautiful and the ocean view and beaches were amazing. The rooms were ... beautiful as well; however, the cleanliness of the rooms left something to be desired. There was a separate charge for everything. The internet was not included, the parking cost $12 a day, there was a $20 resort fee for every day as well! Spread that over the length of your stay and the deal is not that great anymore. A minimum 20 minute walk to any major attraction on Duval Street. I will stay somewhere else on the island next time. There are a plethora of small hotels on the strip that offer the amenities.

Time savers hint, Long Walk

Rent a bike for a cheap way to get around, but to get across the island in comfort, taxis cost about $10 a trip one way.

Nightlife hint, Short Drive

Restaraunts are a dime a dozen but they were all spectacular. Duval St. mirrors Bourbon St. in New Orleans with the nightlife. You will never find a better place to watch the sunset than Mallory Square.

use cab service that charges by the person, not by the milage or uses the meter. It will save you 50% on your cab bill.

The location of the hotel was a short taxi ride to everything, dining nightlife, shopping and more.

Nightlife hint, Long Walk

Not tooo far away from the hotel is Duval Street! That's where the action is! Lots of fun on Duval street! Restaurants, bars, martini bars, shops...you name it, it's there! Tons of fun!

If you plan on traveling to Mallory Square or the 900 block...plan accordingly for time and just take a cab.

Recreation/Attractions hint, Long Walk

Go over to Fort Zachary Taylor park and pay the few dollars to enter for the nicest beach, and best place to spend some time in the water. It's only about 2 miles from the hotel, and there is ample parking and picnic areas.

Salute restuarant was right around the corner from the hotel & overlooks the beach as well. There is an indoor area as well as an outdoor covered patio. The food was very good & probably the cheapest of the places we ate in key west (although I still wouldn't say this place is cheap, food in key west is just expensive so its all relative). My husband and I started with a caprese salad which was tasty & fresh. We both got our own sandwiches, each delicious and good portion sizes. It came with a side of orzo salad which was light and refreshing. We finished off the meal with a slice of key lime pie. The total was around $35. The service was excellent and our food came in a reasonable amount of time. We also liked the fact that this restaurant uses real glasses instead of the plastic cups used by every other restaurant we went to in key west.

Key West is an expensive island! So watch where you choose to spend your money on food. There are some fantastic places. They will cost more than you might usually spend, but these places are worth the expense (unlike many others, which are just expensive for nothing). Blue Heaven (Bahama Village), Santiago's Bodega (Bahama Village), European Garden Cafe (Duval Street), Sloppy Joe's (CRAZY, but fun bar on Duval Street), Angelina's Pizza (Duval Street), 915 (off Duval), Conch Republic Seafood Company (Green & Elizabeth Streets) are just a few of the tasty/worth your money eateries. For other suggestions, ask at your hotel. Just watch that they aren't "hustling" for their friends at other businesses. Also, watch for other locals "hustling" for their friends at other businesses. We ran into that situation a couple of times and had some pretty blah & expensive food.

very nice to go out and eat lots of good food. as to be expected on a resort the food is way over priced and it was ok with a limited selection. so after venturing out we found a place everyone recommended called el mason de pepe's. since they are 90 miles from cuba there is a very large cuban influence down there and they have the best churassco you can imagine with a very quaint band who plays nightly and we ate and danced the night away showing off some of our freshly learned mambo/salsa skills. i recommed everyone go to el mason de pepe's

Shopping hint, Short Walk

Duval street is just a short walk from the hotel and is very entertaining!!! but don't expect to do GREAT shopping there in Key west!

--cloclo, Miami, FL May 8, 2009

Dining hint, In Hotel

Very expensive and the food was not very good. Drinks were also very expensive, ballpark prices at the bar by the pool.

Go see the Key West Sunset in Mallory Square! Stunning!

--Iris, Nashville, TN Apr 24, 2009

Shopping hint, Long Walk

From this hotel you had to walk about 4 blocks to Duval Street--which we started from one end and walked the entire street to the other--lots of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars anything you wanted was there.

--Couple, Chicago, IL Apr 23, 2009

Shopping hint, Short Walk

Everything is within walking or biking distance. The island is only 2.5 X 4 miles so its great!
