New Hotel New Experience

The staff in the restaurants were wonderful, if you don't mind getting new utensils every time you placed them on the plate, ... which was immediately wisked away whether you were finished or not. There was no real service in the buffet. If you wanted more coffee you got up to get it. There was a pitcher of water on every table. I think that the Meat carvers should be supplied with sharper knives, as it looked to me that either the meat was tough or the knives were dull. The best place to eat was "Luiggi's" for Italian food. I think they prepared your meal in the plate you were served as everything was HOT when delivered. The Animation team was everywhere getting guests off their lounges to do something other than getting a tan or just laying about. The drinks in the bars tasted weak, except for the BEER which was always ice cold and was readily available everywhere. I did miss the refrigerator that was not in our room, and that you only get 1 sealed bottle of water when you check in that has to be refilled by you every time you want a drink. The non-refundable safe lock $15.00(US) was a drag. I was tempted to keep it as I did pay for it. Check-in was easy. Checking out was even easier. We were able to keep our "purple" bands on so we could continue on the grounds until we were ready to leave for the airport. The Hotel was GREAT for the price. I would return, but at a different time of the year as the weather was not typlical for November. Don't miss "SHOWTIME". Everynight its a different theme. The entertainers put on a wonderful performance. Hope you enjoy your stay as we did.

As a matter of fact, Shopping, Bars, Local cuisine was directly outside the hotel front door. It didnt matter what you wanted someone was there to get it for you, trips, entertainment, hats, pictures, cigars, t-shirts it was all there. Taxi transports, either by car or motorcycle, was available for a nominal fee. Local gypsy bus, Gua-Gua, also inexpensive if you didnt mind being seated with 18 -20 strangers crammed in a minivan designed to hold 12. Don't forget to "bargin" for your purchases. Its not necessary to accept the first price qouted. The merchants are there to make a living not separate your from your last peso.

This was my sixth trip to the North Coast of the DR. I had never stayed at Casa Marina before, and I chose it because the ... price was amazingly low. Considering what I paid, I would say that everything was fine. The food was good, though it was a bit repetetive. The Italian restaurant was particularly good. The service in the dining room was not great. They do not bring you water or coffee. Sometimes our dirty dishes would pile up before someone came to take them away. The natural beauty of this location is amazing. We loved the reef, and the tubs that were cut out of it were really special. The beach was beautiful, with the big crashing waves that I love. However, on the beach on the reef side, there is no shade. There are umbrellas, but you have to rent them for 100 pesos per day. I found that offensive. The rooms could use a little updating, but the beds were fine, and we didn't spend that much time in our room. I would have been happier if they had had wash cloths, a refirgerator and an iron. The staff at the hotel were all cordial, but not really what I would call friendly. No one was ever rude, but they did not go out of their way either. I was very happy with the location. I have stayed in Sosua before, so I knew what to expect. My preference is to stay in a town so that I can go off of the resort and walk around. For that reason, I prefer to stay in either Sosua or Cabarete. This hotel is okay. There are little extras that I have gotten used to that did not exist here. But if you are looking for a pretty setting in town for a really low price, this is it.

The hotel was in a great location. I visited many places in the surrounding area. I met a lot of good people and had a great ... time. The only thing that would have made my stay better was an elevator. My room was on the top floor and I was there for 10 days so an elevator would have been a perfect addition.

This is a great trip if you are looking for a steal. There are activities that you can do outside and places you can be taken ... to by taxis. But dont expect much they serve almost the same things everyday but there are three restrants you can book and eat at. AND THE ONLY THING THAT REALLY MADE MY STAY BAD WAS I HAD TO GO OUT AND BUY SHAMPOO, CAUSE THEY DONT GIVE IT TO YOU UNLESS YOU SHOW THEM AN EMPTY BOTTLE. SERIOUSLY?! other than that it was fine.

We enjoyed the experience of being in another country and exploring a land that was not our own. The water was great, always ... nice and cool and in contrast to the blazing sun. However, im not sure if it was because we're young, or American, or because we are Black, or just because we're beautiful; but people stared at us as if they wanted our autograph all week, it was rather annoying. We endulged in the "spa" which was infact just a small room with a desk in the front and two massage tables toward the back, the massage was nice the comfort of the room was not! The food was HORRIBLE, there were things there that I wouldnt have wanted to give to a dog, thank God there was rice and bread for us to survive on for 5days!...We were able to snorkel on the Catamaran and that was rather exciting, all the staff on the boat were friendly and entertaining. This hotel should be upfront about not having elevators, they had us on the 4th floor in 100 degree weather. The reception desk was "non"receptive, im still waiting on those towels that we called about on day 3! In comparison to a trip to Aruba, there is none, there was way more comfort in Aruba period.

Food was OK at best, sometimes dissapointing. It really did get monotonous - French nite for example included "French" fries ... and tartar sause for the fish. The three restaurants were OK, much better fare than the buffets. The reservation system would be arbitrary, sometimes turing you down for no reason. Service really needs some big improvment. Sometimes the staff would just turn down requests for snorkling gear or kayaks just to say no. We'd ask for either, told that the gear was all out or no kayaks were available even though the stuff was openly visable. Maid service was sparse until the night before your checkout, didn't leave a tip. And the AC was either on or off - I'd have to shut the unit off in the middle of the night to keep from freezing Beaches were really beautiful. A few locals show up every day. The security staff kept them near the waterline. The Reef part of the hotel was much nicer that the Beach side. Get your room in the Reef side. Bottom line is I won't be back. There are better (and worse) hotels in RD.

Compared to last years all-inclusive...
Thirtysomethings Aug 3, 2009
This was our second all-inclusive Caribbean vacation (last year we did Montego Bay) and comparatively there were plusses and ... minuses. The rooms are average U.S. motel chain style (like Holiday Inn or Motel 6) which was not a factor in our enjoyment because most of the vacation was spent outdoors... The buffet food was not to our liking (and not vegetarian friendly). It had little variety from day to day and the salads and fresh produce were lacking. If you like french fries and meats (ribs, fried chicken, etc) everyday than you'll probably be happy. The dinner restaurants, however, were surprisingly good, the only downside being that we were allowed only 3 reservations (via a couponbook) for the 5 nights we stayed there. We felt a bit cheated. The beach was great- much better swimming and snorkeling than Montego Bay. A major negative was that non-guests (locals- mostly teenage boys) managed to get in daily to the beach and were not thrown out by the one relaxed security guard on the scene. It made us more apprehensive about safety and leaving things behind when we went for a swim. Stage shows at night were fun and live music and dancing at various times during our stay added to the entertainment. Bartenders were much heavier-handed than in Montego Bay, too, and poured stronger, tastier drinks. It was not as social an environment as Jamaica though, probably due to the language barrier (and lack of a swim-up bar)- during the week the guests were largely French and German and on the weekend the majority was Dominican. Overall we had a great time, and would recommend the resort, just not to anyone looking for luxury and pampering.
Traveler type: Couples
There are lots of tours and scuba outings available, but for $25 we took a shorter snorkel expedition (3 hours) and left by boat right from the hotel's beach. It was not as expensive, long, or tiring as the other tours and we thought it was well worth it.
