Caribe Hilton is located only 7 miles from the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU).
There is no place quite like a tropical volcanic island, and no island in the Caribbean quite like Puerto Rico. The geography of the island is very unusual, as it encompasses distinctly different kinds of topography and microclimates in a relatively small area. A rugged mountain range runs across the center from east to west, which often prevents rain clouds from passing to the south. The north side of the island is covered by dense vegetation, limestone formations, and rushing streams, while, the south side is sun-toasted terrain, home to tropical dry forests and many species of exotic birds. Puerto Rico is only about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide, so its most distant points are only a three-hour drive apart. It also means that just about every tropical landscape in existence is a short trip from wherever you happen to be.

The goo, The bad & the really ugly

The security at the door to the pool area stopped us and asked us if we were staying there, we answered "yes" he then ... proceeded to ask us for our room key. I was a little taken back but didn't think too much about it. We were asked to show our room key for a total of about 4 more times during our stay (7 days). The surprising thing was that it was the same security staff(male). After the fourth time, we sat down on the side of the exit to watch the security and he did not ask anyone else for their key. We were a little preturbed by that & complained to the hotel mgr. Nothing was done and no one followed up with us as to what action had been taken. We had dinner at the hotel bar one time and the experience was awful. We sat at the bar and ordered a drink each and some salads. The bartender did not ask us if we needed anything for the rest of the time we were there (1hr). I personaly found him to be very rude, unfriendly and negligent. I expected the service to be exceptional considering we were tourist and it was the Hilton. I was very dissatisfied with pool security and the bartender/server but was very pleased with housekeeping. [...] was very attentive to our needs and we always came back to a clean well stocked room.

We went for our 10 year anniversary and loved the Caribe and Old San Juan. The Caribe was wonderful and had all we needed and ... wanted. Be sure to snorkle and lay in the hammocks. Mojitos at the hotel are $12, but what the hey! You're on vacation.

The concierge recommended the Cafe Puerto Rico downtown in Old SJ. We wanted some authentic PR food. It is a $12 cab ride there and $12 back, but the food, ambience and mojitos were great. Had the arroz con pollo, and shrimp w/ PR sauce. YUM! Later we went to the Cafe Berlin which is a stones throw from the Cafe PR and it was great too. Be sure to look at the picture of the same location back in the 50's. Be ready to spend some $ on cabs or a rental car (we didn't b/c we didn't want the hassle). If you stay at the hotel to eat you will pay.

WILL NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN,
NEVER AGAIN Nov 11, 2009
Stayed one night 10/31/09 to 11/01/09. There was a very large Halloween Party Hosted at the Hotel with 2,500-3,000 people ... most of who were not Guests of the Hotel. These people dressed in customes ran un and down the hallways, knocked on doors, sang and yelled in the hallways until 4:45 a.m.. The front desk refused to do anything, and then stopped answering the phone. Our balcony room door would not lock, three calls to the front desk and still no one showed up to repair it. We got no consideration from the hotel as they stated we BOOKED VIA [...] and we would have to seek a refund from them. We will never do that again. We did not intended to book a 4 Star hotel and not be able to get to it by our taxi due to crowds and then not be able to sleep ther for the money we paid. The restaurant service was very slow and the food was awful and overpriced. We booked 4 rooms and all were very unsatisified with the hotel.

We had wonderful service while there and appreciated it very much. The noise was incidental to the Halloween Party going on ... until wee hours of the morning. We called down for lights to be replaced in the room and it was done in a few minutes. One thing that was missing was there was no exhaust fan in the bathroom and no deoderant provided.

Good location in between Old San Juan and Resort area. Nice beach and hammocks to rest in. Clean room. Everything was ... great except concierge service was pretty weak. Don't do the hotel tours (really marked up), research your own tours online or in the Que Pasa magazine. Front desk was great. Food and drinks a little pricey. Great to return back to the hotel after a long day. Would def go back.

Car Rental right across the street from the hotel. Good price. Bus to old san juan across the street 50 - 75 cents compared to 12 dollar cab. Same travel time, just have to wait for bus. Look up tours at the concierge desk if you want, but find the direct number to the tour and set up your own tour. Saves you 30-50 bucks per tour.

Was pleasantly surprised with Caribe Hilton. Room was average but had a nice view of the ocean. Bed was very comfortable. Key ... to Hilton is it's pool and beach, which is private. Both were fantastic and water was beautiful. Staff was helpful and friendly. Restaurants and bars are on the pricey side but you can pop out front of the hotel to grab a sandwich at Subway to save a few bucks each day or go to the local mercado.

Too many hidden fees
Jessicat Oct 27, 2009
We had a great time in Puerto Rico, but we didn't spend much of our time at the Caribe Hilton. It was in a good location ... within San Juan and close to Old San Juan, where there were shops and restaurants. The pool was extremely nice and there was always an very nice breeze because of the location and set up (which was good because the temperature was in the 90's every day). However, the negative part about the Hilton was all the hidden fees they charge (daily resort fees for towels, parking fees, etc). We didn't eat in any of the hotel restaurants because they were all way too expensive and there were much nicer places for a much better price in Old Saun Juan and Isla Verde. Room service was crazy! It would cost $21 for a pint of ice cream. You can't use any of the non-motorized water sports without paying $30 for a half hour. Completely ridiculous! I've never seen that at any other resort I've stayed at. Also, the valet service was extremely slow! We always had to wait about 15 minutes for our car even if there were no other people waiting.
