We like the ease of walking about downtown and this hotel put us right there. Housekeeping was ok but they never cleaned ... the floors in the 4 nights we were there. Check in and out was not good. Long lines and not enough staff.

Great Price, Great Location
Oldestgirl Jul 14, 2009
The hotel was very nice and the room was spacious. I liked the location, as it was close to Cashman Center, which is where I ... had to go for the 2 days that I was there. Note: my room was on the side where the train runs, but being a heavy sleeper, it didn't bother me, so if you are a light sleeper, ask not to be put on that side of the hotel. I did have to call housekeeping 2 times regarding hair that was left in the tub and on the floor. The issue was handled and I had no more problems with the hotel portion of my trip. The Market Street Cafe was conveniently located in the hotel. The food was good and the prices were very reasonable, but I became concerned about the lack of attention from the waiters and waitresses after being seated. I took notice of this each time my friends and I ate there. There seemed to be a problem, in that none of them came back to check on our table (African Americans)as often as they did the tables of guests of other nationalities. If visiting again, I would eat at another location. I did, however, enjoy my stay at the hotel and there were ample gambling opportunities for those who wanted to gamble. I do plan to inform the hotel management of my issue with the restaurant, as it is a direct reflection on the hotel.

Good Hotel for Seniors
Patricia Mar 16, 2008
This hotel impressed me as a very Senior Citizen oriented hotel. I saw many Seniors there and most all seemed to be enjoying ... their gambling experience. The coffee shop gave then good service even though the food left a great deal to be desired. The other ammenities also seemed to be cater to their needs. In summation, if your a senior tourist and want a comfortable place to gamble and average, reasonably priced food, the California Hotel is your place. If you are expecting excitement, shows or good food, find another place.

The Hotel Cal, was very prompt in getting us our room, very comfortable, not very big but very satisfying service and stay. ... close to other old town casinos. I definetly would plan another stay. The only thing that i could say bad about this is may be4 the bell hop was not very friendly or seemed upset but we all have our days.

No internet hook-ups, Intimidating security guards
heidi Jan 9, 2008
As soon as I walked into the casino floor, I intimidated by security guards, they followed me around, when i sat down to ... play, security guard stood on left side behind me,when i got done, but before getting up from chair a casino employee walked by i moved the handled on machine down. this is the worst casino experience I ever had since i been to vegas. another thing to bother me so much is that they did not had any hook-ups or wireless internet in hotel, they only have a computer with internet access ( pay by usage) but i could not used for my laptop because i must use a VPN connection that resides on my laptop.

Great value and location
Judith Aug 26, 2007
We were there for a quick wedding so the suite was great and the hotel location was great. We walked to all the other ... casinos downtown. We did not eat at our hotel, just drank and gambled. We thought it was a great value and loved the suite, even though we were out late and in our room very little. The check-in person and bellman, were very helpful.

the hotel room was very clean and spacious. i found the beds to be very comfortable. the blow dryer and iron w/board were ... very good to have available.all of the staff that i dealt with were accomadating and friendly. the bell desk was very good to get me help with a situation i was having with local ground transportation. i also thought the casino was pretty nice and we ate great food at the pasta pirate which is also located there. the hotels location worked good for us to get a short walk in when going to freemont street. i will most likely stay there again on my next visit.

A great first time at the Cal
Eric Jun 3, 2007
I chose the Cal for a downtown weekend in Vegas for my husband's recent birthday. We checked in on Friday evening. There was ... no line at the check-in counter and the clerk upgraded us from a room to a suite for free when I mentioned it was hubby's birthday and we would be playing there. The suite was modern and clean, with a huge shower and nice soaking tub in the bathroom. There was also a wet bar and two TVs, one flatscreen. The housekeepers and staff in the Cafe were friendly. Food in the cafe was standard but a good value. We checked out the pool but passed as it was smaller than our suite. If you have a laptop and need internet access, you can use the wireless in the Main Street Station's player's club lounge which is an easy walk across the bridge between the sister hotels. I signed up for the player's club, gambled a few hundred bucks, and have already been invited back for a free stay. I'm definitely planning to take them up on it. After staying on the Strip many times, staying downtown at the Cal is very kick-back and relaxing. It's also a quick walk to the Fremont Street Experience.
