Friendly, great views, super breakfast

We loved the Best Western Ecovista. The room had a great view of the mountains and Lago Argentino, the two queen-size beds ... were very comfortable, and the manager was extremely friendly and helpful. We arrived very late the first night due to a plane delay, and she not only made arrangements for us to eat at one of the best restaurants in town, but drove us there and back in her own car! In the mornings we had a delicious breakfast each day with the snow-capped peaks glowing in the distance. She offered to provide fresh-made eggs for us, but we were too full after eating her terrific homemade pastries (cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, brownie cake) plus ham + cheese on croissants, juice and fresh fruit. Internet access is free, too. Down side: rooms are one flight up with no elevator (the staff helped carry our baggage). Also the hotel is a 10-minute walk from town, easy in the daytime but treacherous at night (unpaved streets with little lighting). However, poor roads are a problem all over El Calafate, and the Best Western seemed much more convenient than many of the other hotels; note cabs from town are very cheap, and daylight hours are long during the season. We would definitely recommend this to anyone who can negotiate the stairs.

We loved Rick's Asador for dinner. It features an all you can eat parilla for an extremely reasonable price: unlimited salad bar (quite good) plus as many platefuls of varied grilled meats as you can eat. All the meats were among the best we had on our trip (in which we sampled generally good beef, lamb + chicken all over Argentina).
