Barcelo Palace during Hurricane IDA

runinamok75 Nov 19, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Our room was upgraded from the coloniel to the place. The staff was so friendly and courteous when compared to other resorts ... we have stayed in years prior to Mexico. The food was so good at the buffets that we didnt care that the ala carte restaurants were booked up early on. Lobster nights were our favorite at the buffet. My companion had at least 5 lobster tails. The beach was lovely despite the hurricane coming in and the service and grounds were perfect. I am looking forward to booking this place again soon. I DO NOT recommend booking the Gray Line Tours bus to/from the airport as we had so many hotel stops prior as well as squeezing a lot of passengers in the van. Next time we'll book a private cab direct to the hotel on-line. Everything else was perfect at the Barcelo Riviera Maya complex!

We had a great time at this resort. The beach was better than advertised - a pleasant surprise. We took day trips to Tulum, ... Xel-Ha, and Isla Mujures, all of which we highly recommend. The buffet had plenty of tasty choices, and the on-site restaurants provided a little spice to the week. The staff was friendly, our room was clean, and the sun was shining.

If we go back, we will rent a car and drive to local attractions. The excursion company rep was impossible to locate all week, and the effort of trying to find out what time we were getting picked up for our trip to the airport was cutting into valuable vacation time. When driving yourself, make sure to obey traffic laws.

Barcelo

Birdie Coastie Wife Nov 15, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

We have been to the Mayan Riviera before, twice in the past 4 years. Both times we stayed at Aventura Spa Palace, and we ... were married there 2 years ago. We feel we have a pretty good understanding of how the Mexican all-inclusive scene. This time we went to Barcelo for our brother's wedding. We decided to make a full 8 nights out of the vacation, since we have enjoyed the area so much in the past. Barcelo was a beautiful resort with many great amenities. We definitely enjoyed our time there, and the food was delicious. The rooms were very clean. One of the best surprises was the beach area was a true beach with coral reefs weaving in and out along the resort. We had excellent snorkeling and didn't even have to leave the resort! However our stay was not without problems. The staff, primarily at the buffets and bars, was less than friendly. Often you got the impression that they simply didn't want to be there. The restaurants, when you could get a reservation, were much better with service and friendliness. The food was excellent and plentiful. It was a shame that the staff often didn't come back to your table after you ordered your first drink, or gave you a hard time when you asked for something special. Also, while I understand we were in Mexico and the primary spoken language is Spanish, it was a bit off-putting when the staff would ask you what you wanted to drink then return a complete blank stare of confusion when you asked for orange juice. I just think if you're trained to ask the question, you should also be trained to understand the responses. I won't get into the issues the bride and groom had with their wedding plans, but to summarize it seemed as if they had never spoken to the supposed coordinator. Whenever it was time to address the next item on the agenda, she seemed to have no idea what they were talking about. Luckily the couple had a binder with all of the email correspondence over the past six months to verify arrangements and even prices (which seemed to increase with every conversation). Lesson here is document and be ready to back up your argument. Lastly while we were there a convention group of almost 750 came to the resort, and seemingly took over. Not only did they almost have to move our family's wedding to another venue (a mile away... quite a hike in heels), but suddenly no one could get reservations at any of the restaurants. Our money is just as good as theirs and we probably paid more per person than they did. Either the staff should have alerted us to the large group upon our arrival (so we could prepare dinner reservations in advance) or they should have increased the staffing to better accommodate the hug parties. Truly though, we had a very nice experience here and would recommend it for a couple or small group, but probably not for a wedding.

Check your prices before bying anything at the stores in the shopping area. While I feel that we got a few good deals in jewerly and other trinkets, we definitely did not get good deals on tequila or vanilla. Just because they are on the hotel complex does not mean they arfe offering good or fair pricing. And everything is ALWAYS negotiable.

Barcelo All Inclusive - fantastic site!

Smiling Dave's Wife Nov 14, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

The beaches are beautiful. Lots of water sports for free and great fun. Great Snorkeling at the site. The buffets are ... awesome and the Ala Cartes are good - I would not got to the Brazilian Steakhouse but the other 3 we visited were great. The theatres could have been better. My only real complaint is the days go by so fast and the sun sets too early.

I was so happy with the Pools, the food, the service, However, when I did check into the hotel and was given my room,I was ... very disappointed, I upgraded to a junior suite, I know I read it in the description of the room that all jr suites had a viev of the ocean, that is why I paid the extra money!!!!!!!!! I was looking at a Forest from my balcony and the futhest room from the beach!!!!!!!!!!! I call the sevice desk and complained to no satifaction, they just kept telling me to call my travel agent, it was not there reponsibility!!!!!! they would not even move me to a room that looks over the pool!!!!!! other than this it was a really beautiful place! Just make sure you know what room you will get! They did however, say they would try to move me for $160.00 per person per night, That really angered me off!!!!!! I knew then they had rooms with a view!!!!!

Barcelo's buffets and restaurants are amazing! The only thing they don't tell you is that you can't eat at a restaurant every ... night of your stay. You only get 2-4 nights at a restaurant snd the rest of the time you eat at the buffets. But the buffets are huge so you never have to eat the same things. The food is excellent! The pool is huge and clean, the staff is very friendly. I would definetly go to Barcelo again and again.

Top shelf getaway

Resqdiver Nov 9, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

A most relaxing experience. Amazing food, coctails and service. Spotless grounds and beaches, beautiful vistas and great ... attention to detail. A few hiccups with housekeeping, but nothing to really complain about. Downside ... fair distances between food and amenities. The resort does need a golf course of it's own.

Barcelo - Beautiful Hotel - So-So Beach

Vacationer Nov 2, 2009

Would recommend to a friend!

Hotel appearance, upkeep, pool, food was phenomenal! We stayed @ the Palace. I would go back to this hotel in a heart beat. ... The only downside was most of the beach was a little rocky, so you will want to bring water shoes. Their pool (at the Palace) was amazing!

The check-in took alomost 2 hours. We went with 8 of our friends. They had us split up between 2 different hotels and had no ... record of 2 of our friends. It was very difficult to communicate with the staff, as they spoke little or no English. This is not a place for the beer drinker to go; Only one choice for beer; Otherwise, the food was great, at the buffet, the food was good at all of the resturants except the Sante Fe steak house. 9 of 10 of us ordered the Filet; Only 1 was edible; The others were so tough that we could not cut them with steak knives and did not eat but a small amount of the steak.

Nightlife hint, In Hotel

The nightlife in the hotel was almost non existant. The theatre had nightly shows, all except one, we did not stay for, as it was boring. The Broadway show was great. This is a great place to go, if you like drinking all day & night and like laying in the Sun.

Unbeatable location for the price

We stayed at the Palace which was supposed to give us access to all 5 resorts, but what they failed to tell us was, except in ... prime season, 3 of the resorts are shut down. This really limited the restaurants and activities that we had to choose from. The resort was very beautiful and very well maintained, but except for at the adult pool, the staff was a little stand-offish.

We snorkeled, parasailed, jet skied, kayaked, boogie boarded, played pool volleyball! The resort had tons of activities to ... keep you as busy as you wanted throughout the day. Also, relaxing pool side, in pool, and beach beds. The food was amazing! From the buffets to the fancy night restaurants! The drinks where free and wonderful :) This trip was one of the best I have ever taken! No hidden fees and get a lot for your money!

Shopping hint, Short Walk

there was great shopping on the hotel grounds and also at Playa del Carmen just 30 min away.

--very satisfied, santa clarita, ca Nov 20, 2009

Time savers hint

Book a taxi R/T instead of the Grey Line Tours. Too many stops prior tp the hotel and the taxi (if booked online prior) is actually cheaper!

--runinamok75, Philadelphia, PA Nov 19, 2009

Money savers hint, In Hotel

If we go back, we will rent a car and drive to local attractions. The excursion company rep was impossible to locate all week, and the effort of trying to find out what time we were getting picked up for our trip to the airport was cutting into valuable vacation time. When driving yourself, make sure to obey traffic laws.

--Michaels52, Providence, Rhode Island Nov 18, 2009

Dining hint, Long Walk

The walking was actually good because the food was so good we needed to walk some of it off. No complaints about any of the food or the employees. We loved it.

--Gramma Sandy, Toledo, Ohio Nov 15, 2009

Shopping hint, In Hotel

Check your prices before bying anything at the stores in the shopping area. While I feel that we got a few good deals in jewerly and other trinkets, we definitely did not get good deals on tequila or vanilla. Just because they are on the hotel complex does not mean they arfe offering good or fair pricing. And everything is ALWAYS negotiable.

--Birdie Coastie Wife, Petaluma, CA Nov 15, 2009

Money savers hint, Short Walk

If you want to go to Tulum or Playa Del Carmen, walk to the gate of the complex and catch the shuttle bus. It costs $2 per person each way instead of $20 for a cab. You only will wait 5 min for the shuttle to pick you up.

--Maegan, Craig, CO Nov 11, 2009

The shops out by the swim up bars are less expensive and have a lot of the same stuff as the shopping plaza area.

--Hooked on Riviera Maya, Billings, Montana Oct 20, 2009

Dining hint, In Hotel

Make reservations for a la carte restaurants...better food than the buffet. Breakfast buffet was excellent and much better than most other resorts!
