My husband and I went to Chicago just for a weekend. We loved that the Ambassador East was a historic hotel, it has so much ... character that you just don't see anymore. The location was right next to food, shopping, and the subway. The tv was very small but we were hardly in the room.

Overall great experience. Hotel is old and showing a bit of wear. My bathroom could have used some major renovation to add a ... bit more class. Hotel has tons of charm. Great architecture and things you don't see in the newer hotels. Classy bar as well. TV was very small as well. Great staff however and the location was cool. Only a few blocks from the red line as well.

I could walk to everything I needed and safely. Once I left the hotel, I was immediately involved in the outdoor activity ... with access to everything I could ever want. The hotel employees were very helpful and thoughtful. The Pump Room provided instant friends if that is what you were looking for. I sensed it was very "inclusive" there and if it was a party you wanted, they had it.

Traveling with my business partner, booked a double room for one night. Through a miscommunication he also booked the room ... which we realized at check-in. They did not allow us to cancel the extra room without the full-night penalty of $186, despite having plenty of rooms available (did not cost them a booking). Furthermore since we now only needed singles, I did not get the $60 difference refunded. My partner in frustration asked if they could at least throw in the $10 internet services (nope not free which is another bad service sign) for our rooms, but nope no dice. Not a hint of any attempt to satisfy a returning customer..

Hotel was adequate for the price. Large room with sitting space. Bathroom had a large counter area which could have easily ... handled two sinks which would have been a plus. You definitely need to like the yester-year to appreciate the accomodations. Did not use any of the dining at the hotel but this survey required a rating anyway :) so 3 was given

This was the best deal I have ever got. I stayed here 4 nights for a conference. The thing that I love most about this hotel ... is it's business center. You can use their computers to surf Internet and print for free. I printed out my boarding pass there. It was very convenient. The only thing I can complain about is the loud neighbors. Luckily, they only stayed one night.

Pricey, but mostly worth it
Honeymooner Oct 23, 2009
Extremely helpful staff, a famous but expensive restaurant (The Pump Room, frequented by celebrities in droves), very ornate ... furnishings, great room service (also expensive, of course). Our room was smallish, the bathroom a little cramped, and you could hear every noise outside our door (and there was plenty of that). But they do try hard to please and to get your business as a return customer. Not sure I'd want to shell out the money again, but if I do, I'll probably go back in spite of the few flaws I mentioned.

easy2please Oct 22, 2009
Hotel experience completely met my needs, however, in a city filled with big extravagant hotels I would not expect to be ... overwhelmed by this out of the way (though very nice and quite unique) location. I am surprised though that the conference I was in town for added this hotel to their list. The shuttle ride over to the convention center was at least 20 minutes each way. I enjoyed my stay and found that there was plenty to do within a 10 - 15 minute walk. In-room wireless was a little spotty, required a 15 minute phone call with tech support to get connected.

A few minutes down State Street from the Ambassador is a strip with numerous dining (and shopping) options, though from the front door of the hotel the neighborhood appears entirely residential.

Did not have ice machines on every floor - stayed on the 15th floor and had to travel to the 8th floor for ice. Was charged ... $1.15 for a local phone call and $6.33 for a one call to a Pennsylvania-based cell phone which I thought was excessive.

Glen Oct 5, 2009
Our experience was teriffic. The property is in a beautiful Chicago north side "neighborhood" ... we loved the ambiance and ... the classic nature of the hotel. We also liked being slightly off the beaten path, yet within walking distance to a variety of dining, bistros, etc. We liked not staying in one of the "big boxes" (Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton) for a change ... and the bonus was the staff was supurb. Most helpful. The concierge was top notch! Thanks for making our anniversary weekend a delight!

Classic and Classy!
Nanster Oct 5, 2009
I'm a displaced Chicagoan, and as a young girl I'd read Maggie Daly's "gossip" column detailing the celebs who stayed at the ... Ambassador East and/or frequented the Pump Room. I dreamed of staying there one day, and although it took nearly 4 decades I finally did, and it was truly a dream come true. Is it showing it's age - yes; has it been patched/plastered/painted numerous times - yes; is the upholstery a bit worn - yes, but the rooms are spotless, service beyond compare, and if you like ornate, the AE will be "right up your alley." You'll be surrounded by gold gilded mirrors, chandeliers, marble, Queen Anne chairs, masterpiece prints, ball and claw foot furniture, giant vases with sprays of fresh flowers, and floral drapes and carpeting in pink, green, and mauve. Besides hotel guests, the neighborhood folks come to breakfast at the Pump Room, and dinnertime has locals pulling up and handing their car keys to the valets as they head in to dine. Most hotel guests are dressed "to the 9s" heading out for an evening in Chicago while mornings and afternoons are much more casual. Room Service menu is typical in content, price, and "add-ons", and after emptying the in room mini-bar I used it as a fridge for fruit, cheese, water (bought at Jewel), and leftovers from dinners out. I particularly appreciated being given a key to the mini-bar. Instead of using a hotel safe deposit box, I placed money, credit cards, etc., in the mini-fridge, locked it, and carried the key with me. Don't bother making in room coffee. Grab a paper cup(s) and top(s) and head to the Pump Room where there are thermos bottles of coffee (regular and decaf) and tea, and help yourself. The AE is situated in a "well heeled" neighborhood which is beautiful, especially Astor Street and parts of State Street, and well taken care of by the City as well as it's inhabitants. Spied a few neighborhood folks picking up stray paper bags, etc., while walking their dogs. Check the alleys - they're pristine! My only complaint (minor) is the bathroom in my room had a pedastal sink so I didn't have enough room for all my doo-dads - would have preferred a vanity 'cause the 2 glass shelves just weren't enough for my needs. I make it "home" to Chicago twice a year but usually have companions along for the ride. This is my first solo trip in 20 years, so chose to stay where I wanted, and I'm so glad I did. From now on, it's the AE - my companions can stay elsewhere if they choose.
