The Best Deal Ever!
1st Timer Oct 27, 2009
It was our first introduction to Costa Rica. We loved the warm water and the shade trees on the black beach. Monkeys and ... Iguanas entertained us daily. The rooms are standard with gorgeous views of Golfo Papagayo. The food is Costa Rican meaning all fresh veggies and fruit, beans and rice, fish, chicken, pork and beef. Drinks are bottomless and made with all fresh juices. Good Spainish wines! The locals pack the place on Friday and Saturday nights. They are the nicest people. Lots to do...kayaking, fishing, swimming and horseback riding. My favorite was the boat ride to Playa Panama to do a 2 1/2 hour horseback ride. If you are an experienced rider just make sure you are the last on the trail. Hang back and let your horse eat and drink along the way. The big pay-off is the lengthy gallop to catch up with rest of the group!!! The all day trip to Arenal was not worth it. Do the MegaTour to Rincon instead.

Book your Friday and Saturday night dinners in the Italian and Mexican restaurants to avoid the large families in line at the buffet. Week nights are better at the buffet.

The entertainment was a little silly. Would have liked more authentic meals more frequently. Off season meal choices limited.

Wonderful Honeymoon!
David and Liora Sep 28, 2009
We really enjoyed the hotel and would recommend it. It was actually a great deal because the food and drink alone would cost ... as much as the room. The rooms were very nice, the location was great, and there was lots of wildlife to see. The hotel was VERY secluded though (which we liked), but don't expect to walk to anything else. Food was on average okay/good. We enjoyed it, and its what you should expect from a big buffet, but we had better food outside the hotel. They have two restaurants in the hotel which had better food, except the meats weren't cooked through all the way :-( The drinks were pretty delicious, and who can complain about unlimited yummy drinks?
Traveler type: Couples
They have some great tours through the hotel. I would recommend the Adrenaline Combo as a very fun tour and a great value for the money. Arenal tour is also worth doing. I would skip the white water rafting. It's more expensive than the Adrenaline Combo and you pretty much do the same thing (and a lot more!) on the AC tour.

Fantastic vacation. Great views, food, and staff. Highly recommend [...] next to the front desk for booking excursions - ... especially the "monte verde combo". Hotel isn't near that much but the excursions were a great way to explore the rest of the country.

Awesome Hotel for the Price-Great Staff
Penny Pincher Jul 8, 2009
I've been to Jamaica, Bahamas, and Hawaii. Jamaica was the best so far BUT I think Costa Rica just passed that up. I ... recommend zip lining or white water rafting while you are there. I would also recommend to take a spanish dictionary to brush up on some spanish skills. Most of the staff knows a little english as well as the guides on the tours that you go on.)Pretty much everything about the hotel was awesome. I liked that this hotel had a swim up bar and that I never had to get out of the pool for a drink. The only thing that I can recommend is that the food or food selection could be improved at the buffet. The Tex-Mex restraurant was very good. I didn't try the Italian restrarant. Also, the entertainment was better on some days rather than others. But I did like that they included kids activities even though I wasn't traveling with kids.

Disappointed Traveler Jun 17, 2009
I thought the hotel did not care about its guests. While it advertises a black sand beach and a white sand beach, both were ... awful. The Italian restaurant was terrible. The buffet passable at best, other than breakfeast which was fine. The drinks seemed terribly watered down. The entertainment very poor. Little in the way of activities.

It was run down, the pictures do it more justice than what it actually looks like. the food was terrible, everyone there ... that we met didnt like the food. it reminded me of college campus food. also the staff was super friendly but not very informative, there was no welcome packet to tell you how things were run or anything, you had to figure it out yourself or ask other guests.

Overall it was very relaxing. The clientele were very friendly. People who worked food, bar etc. were very friendly. Would ... have liked a restaurant that served authentic Costa Rican food. Requested a wake up call and did not receive one. Booked a tour before we left and Allegro would not allow the guide to come to the lobby to pick us up.

The good, the bad, and the really ugly
Karen May 19, 2009
The views from the resort were beautiful. The pool at the resort was very nice. As for the food, not very good. Same old ... selections day in and day out. The rooms need some upgrading big time. The resort is out in the middle of nowhere--not a good place if you'd like to go out of the resort some. The best thing about the resort was the boat ride over to the private beach. The water was clear and snorkeling was great. There is a beach in front of the resort but it's not the nicest.

Allegro Papagayo is a Great hotel to get away from the city and enjoy the beatiful Costa Rica. Personally, I think the front ... desk should be more organized when receiving incoming guests. When I came in my friends and I had to wait hours to get in our room. Other than that I think its a great hotel, lovely people, FUN times.

Great Vacation
Panda Bear May 10, 2009
We were there April 30 - May 8, 2009. It was in the 90's with at least 90% humidity. Way too hot for me! Very difficult to ... get around the hotel property, steep steep hills but they did run shuttles to help you move about. The staff was outstanding, everyone was exceptional. Great language skills, very helpful, and friendly. The food was varied and well presented. We had a rental car which helped, as there is nothing in the area, at all.

You really should have a rental car or sign up for tours. There is little to do in the area.

Its a great place to get away but remember you get what you paid for. the rooms are clean but nothing special. my bathroom ... did smell humid but i just closed the door and the smell didnt travel to the rest of the room. my true complaint would be front desk. some of the staff is clueless and unprofessional. Do not expect any luxuries at Allegro Papagayo. It is a beautiful place and we enjoyed ourselves very much, but it is not ... what many people would call a great hotel. No room service. Food was ok. Shuttle bus was very convienent and very necessary to get up the hills. Wildlife was FANTASTIC.

Not for surfers
Beata Jun 21, 2008
I was dissaponted by the hotel location. Costa Rica is famous place for surfers, but this hotel is on the bay, so there are ... no waves, no way to surf. Also hotel staff was not very friendly and food was not the best. Practically no activities, my teenage daughters were very bored. We got a good time only on the tours, which are very expensive. Costa Rica is not cheap anymore!

The beach is right there. It is a black sand beach but this is a bay and there is not the typical waves of the ocean. Also the water has a green tinge vice the ocean blue. Very nice. Coco Beach the closest other beach and town is about 1/2 hour away. There is shopping, bars and restaurants and night clubs there.
--Duane, Honolulu, HI Jun 13, 2007
The hotel sits on a black sand beach(from the volcano),which is still amazing however they offer a free boat ride to a white sand beach, also the resort offers a boat ride to coco beach for shopping which is $26 per person.A cab ride to coco beach is $60 roundtrip. The boat ride is the way to go,you truly get to see paradise.
