During your Las Vegas vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Sahara
This is one place where there seem to be more tables than slots and video-poker machines. It's also one of the few Strip casinos that offers low rollers good deals such as $1 craps and blackjack. But belligerent drunks and other fun-killing folks are often found at these $1 tables. Still, on a recent visit, the high ceilings and the unexpected Arabian Nights touches over the tables were nicer than we remembered from previous visits (maybe it all got dusted recently) and we made a killing at blackjack, so now we love this place again. (What? We told you it was entirely arbitrary!) The Sahara runs frequent slot tournaments and other events, and its slot club, Club Sahara, offers cash rebates and other perks. Note: This is the only Strip casino that offers pan, a card game.
Neonopolis
It's hard to get visitors Downtown, but if you are genuinely looking for activities that do not have to do with gambling, this $100 million open-air restaurant, shop, and entertainment complex (with an 11-screen movie theater) provides plenty of motivation. Located right at the Fremont Street Experience, where Fremont Street meets Las Vegas Boulevard South, it's basically a big, open-air mall, but one that is powered by Jillian's, a national chain that specializes in creating little urban entertainment centers (they are behind the similar Metreon in San Francisco), with a state-of-the-art arcade (as well stocked, from air hockey to virtual-reality games, as we've ever seen), bowling alley, billiards, two bars, a nightclub, and a restaurant all in one tidy package. It's not a 24-hour joint, but the hours are long enough that nongamblers can amuse themselves here while the gamblers in their party are doing their thing. The cafe has an extensive menu (from hamburgers to jambalaya), with most items in the $4 to $10 range and as tasty as you could want from such a place. It's too close to the Fremont Street Experience not to go and has too much to offer not to stay, but it is too noisy, thanks to happy kids and teenagers, to want to stay too long, depending on where you fit in those demographics.
Speed: The Ride/Las Vegas Cyber Speedway
Auto racing is the fastest-growing spectator sport in America, so it's no surprise that these two attractions at the Sahara are a popular stop. The first is an 8-minute virtual-reality ride, Cyber Speedway, featuring a three-quarter-size replica of a NASCAR race car. Hop aboard for an animated, simulated ride -- either the Las Vegas Motor Speedway or a race around the streets of Las Vegas (start with the Strip, with all the hotels flashing by, and then through the Forum Shops -- whoops! There goes Versace! -- and so forth). Press the gas and you lean back and feel the rush of speed; hit a bump and you go flying. Should your car get in a crash, off you go to a pit stop. At the end, a computer-generated report tells you your average speed, how many laps you made, how you did racing against the others next to you, and so forth. It's a pretty remarkable experience. In a separate 3-D motion theater, you'll don goggles to view a film that puts you right inside another race car for yet another stomach-churning ride (even more dizzying than the virtual-reality portion). Speed junkies and race-car buffs will be in heaven here, though those with tender stomachs should consider shopping at the well-stocked theme gift shop instead.Speed: The Ride is a roller coaster that blasts riders out through a hole in the wall by the new NASCAR Cafe, then through a loop, under the sidewalk, through the hotel's marquee, and finally straight up a 250-foot tower. At the peak, you feel a moment of weightlessness, and then you do the whole thing backwards! Not for the faint of heart.

Where's the elevator?
allen, 2007-03-14
The Freemont Experience on Freemont street is something that you have to see if you are downtown.
On arriving at the El Cortez and parking on the second level, I took the elevator to the lobby to check in. While waiting in line to check in, I heard at least four couples saying that their electronic room keys are not letting them in (one person said that he had been down for the fifth time). After I had checked in and returned to the elevator that I had come from, I returned to the car to get my luggage. With luggage in tow, I went looking for my room. Back in the lobby and looking for the elevator or a sign for the elevator, I stopped a cocktail server and then Security for help. One part of the hotel rooms has a staircase with four digit numbers and another part has an elevator and room numbers with three digit numbers. I had no problems with my electronic key at any time during my stay. The room was very spacious and well maintained. Being downtown and hotel construction work around the clock, it was somewhat noisey at night. It was only a short walk to one of the oldest hotels in Vegas and the light show in that area was great.
Horrible business amenities

Fremont street experience is two blocks away. I would not recommend walking by oneself as this part of town is shady.
The room was right over the casino. We had to wear earplugs in order to sleep since they announced something over the intercom regularly. There were not any electrical plugs available in the room. I had to dig out one with an extension cord behind the bed so I could use my laptop. There was no room to put toiletries in the bathroom. I had nowhere to sit other than on the bed to use my laptop. We would not stay here again unless the room was upgraded and we stayed another floor away from the casino or in the towers.

dirty, and unsafe
David, 2007-03-08
there is none run run run
The hotel was not clean. you could see outside by around the door. the people were not friendly and unprofessional. I have to seek other arrangements. The bathroom in the room was no bigger than a closet. you had to turn on the shower through one door than close it and get into it by the back . It was smelly and I slept on top of the bed spread. I couldn't get out fast enough. The only thing it was good for was getting out of the elimates. I would never stay there again and never recommend it to anyone. Bad Business!!! So I was out the cost. But well worth the safety and peace of mind. VERY POOR
was ok for the price

I got a room above a parking garage. The decor was from the 1970's. STAY AWAY from this place, it's a hole.

Lake Mead State Park
We were very pleased by the large room with its separated seating area and the nice view of the mountains, also the bathroom and vanity areas were separated which is very conveniente for two people. The personnel was very friendly and we were impressed by the cleanliness. The only drawback was the lack of a coffemaker in the room. We had to buy one (because we like a cup of java first hour in the morning)
