Punta Cana Flights
The Dominican Republic has eight international airports. The best airport for flights to Punta Cana is Punta Cana International, which is between 10 and 30 minutes away from the main hotels. Other airports which may be used are the La Romana Airport which is 90-120 minutes away from the nearest hotels or the Las Americas International Airport which is about 4 hours' drive from the main hotels. The most popular way to travel from Las Americas is the commuter express bus. Most resorts pre-arrange transport to pick up their guests from the airport. Other transport options include taxis and shuttle services.
Punta Cana Weather
As with most of the Caribbean, in Punta Cana the weather is fairly warm all year round with temperatures averaging 30C. May to October is the hot season and very little rain falls in Punta Cana. Peak season is from January to March and prices tend to go up and there is a need to book in advance as the resorts fill up very quickly. From June to November is the off season, as storms and potential hurricanes tend to be at their worst. However, low air tickets and bargains become available but it is not advisable to travel at this time as Punta Cana flights may be cut short. Many resorts also use this time for maintenance. April to May is the time when it's off peak and the possibility of some good deals is high.
Getting Around Punta Cana
Tourists hardly ever leave the resort and if they do, normally a short walk to the beach does the job. For longer distances you have the helicopter taxi, which is pretty pricey, the normal taxi which is quite pricey even though it is the most comfortable, car rentals as the road network in the Dominican Republic is quite good. You may also want to try a boat or for the more adventurous, the local bus service. This is by far the cheapest but the buses are apt to be infrequent and overcrowded, most travelers from Punta Cana flights prefer other methods.
Punta Cana Attractions
Punta Cana is an amazing place with top beaches, a rich history, brilliant weather and so much to keep you busy. Punta Cana is the single largest resort area in the Caribbean. Some of the main attractions include:
- Punta Cana Ecological Reserve, a 1500-acre freshwater reserve which is home to some of the Dominicans native species
- Helicopter Tours, view this little bit of paradise from the air
- Bavaro Beach (Playa Bavaro), the home of the Dominican Republic's resort sector
- Rafting, for any white water fan, the Rio Yasque offers amazing waterfalls and some of the most challenging courses in the world
- Dolphin Island lets you Swim with the Dolphins, and includes a short boat trip to a platform where you interact with trained dolphins and also includes 15 minutes with these unique creatures
