The Age of the Cheaponomy

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Cash_jet2 In tough economic times, we’re all looking for ways to get the most for our money.

That’s why CheapTickets has teamed up with SmartMoney.com to bring you the new Cheaponomy section of our blog, devoted to saving and stretching your dollars so you can afford the things that enrich your life — whether it’s travel, fashion or dining out.

Cheaponomy is an outgrowth of our Show Us Your Cheap campaign, in which nearly 1,000 consumers shared ways to cut costs and still enjoy traveling — even in tough economic times. Tips included taking night trains to avoid overnight hotel stays and grocery shopping at a destination rather than dining out.

When CheapTickets and SmartMoney.com surveyed more than 1,000 readers to get a better sense of consumer behavior in the Age of the Cheaponomy, travel ranked No. 2 behind dining out among leisure activities consumers are trying to afford. And while two-thirds of those surveyed said they’re lowering travel expenses, they’re also more likely to cut back on other areas first.

Check back here often for regular updates, ideas and tips on getting by and leaving room for leisure travel — even in "The Age of the Cheaponomy."

Cheap ski vacations: Tips for saving money on the slopes

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

cheap tickets
It’s that time of year again, when the hottest travel destinations are the places with the most snow. If you’re looking for cheap flights and hotels so you can hit the slopes, check out these tips first. The folks at Christy Sports have some advice for making your ski vacation cheaper.

1. Avoid peak holiday periods. Christmas, New Years and Presidents Day are popular times for ski vacations, which generally means that airline tickets and hotels are more expensive. Try to plan your ski vacation at less popular time.

2. Book your lift tickets early. Discounts on lift tickets typically are available through mid November.

3. Consider renting ski equipment. With most airlines now charging higher fees for oversized baggage, it may cost less to rent skis at your destination. And don’t forget to make rental arrangements early. Often, discounts are available when you rent skis ahead of time.

4. Order from the bar menu. When dining out, ask if the restaurant has a bar menu. Bar portions generally are not much smaller than dinner portions, but can be much cheaper. The bar also can offer a fun dining ambiance.

5. Book your ski vacation on CheapTickets. Ok, so that’s not from Christy Sports — that’s from us. But you know that CheapTickets has deals on hotels and cheap flights to Denver, Salt Lake City and other top ski resort destinations.
