All about autumn: Plan a cheap Chicago vacation before the Bean gets iced over. Credit: Bosc d'Anjou.

As if Chicagoans don’t hear it enough already, the forecast just got more frigid for 2012. An AccuWeather.com meteorologist predicted that folks in the Windy City might “want to move after this winter.”

As a 9-year Chicagoan who’s endured cracked hands, high heating bills and a Snowmaggedon that swallowed a jillion cars on Lake Shore Drive, I won’t state the obvious. However I will say that fall is the most glorious time of year (read: it’s in the 70s today) and if you’re at all curious, now is the time to stroll through Millennium Park to snap a photo of Cloud Gate. You know, before it gets too cold. (more…)

Farm fresh produce for a healthy summer meal. Credit: NatalieMaynor.

By Derek Brown

I can still smell the fresh street fair food from my weekend trip to New York City.  Grilled summer corn, fresh fruit carts and lots of greasy deliciousness are summer scents that are hard to resist, but I managed to just enjoy the aroma.  It’s a good thing, too.  There are so many chefs creating amazing meals with the freshest ingredients right from the farm.  Here are 3 New York City restaurants where the focus is on healthy, sustainable and delicious dining. A pair of cheap Chicago hotels for St. Patty’s Day weekend

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

By Vince Font

This might sound strange, but every time I think about St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago I can’t help remembering the scene from “The Fugitive” where Harrison Ford uses the parading throngs to make good on his getaway from Tommy Lee Jones. While the actual parade and river dyeing happened over the weekend, the party will most definitely carry on past the actual holiday, making for a great last-minute trip if you can manage it.

Maybe it was seeing the waters of the Chicago River dyed green on such a big screen that started my fascination, or the fact that the people in the parade all seemed to be having such a good time that I’d rather have had the camera follow them for the next hour and a half. Either way, real life has a way of proving that sometimes it’s entirely impossible to climb into your favorite movie scenes — and that doing so in this case doesn’t have to be all that expensive, especially if you know how to round up some of the best cheap Chicago hotels.

By Susan Johnston

After your St. Patrick's Day pub crawl, retreat to cheap Boston hotels such as The Langham.

St. Patrick’s Day approaches, and short of flying across the pond to Ireland, there are few places that get more into the spirit than Boston. That’s no surprise when you consider that the Boston Irish Tourism Association reports almost a quarter of Massachusetts residents claims Irish ancestry.

South Boston will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 20. In addition to the main event, dozens of pubs, bars and restaurants host Irish-inspired events around this time.

Looking for cheap vacation packages this spring? Here are three cheap Boston hotels to consider. (more…)

While based in New York, which I called home for over a decade, one of my goals was to live as affordably as possible. Living on a writer’s salary, I had no choice. A common misconception is that this city of dreams is only for the rich. That’s simply not true. You can see the flashing neon lights of Times Square, rest your weary legs on the Central Park’s Great Lawn (perfect for a picnic), and grab a Staten Island ferry with requisite views of the Statue of Liberty, more or less all for free. If you’re taking a New York City trip, I’m the best guy to give you advice on inexpensive activities and cheap New York hotels.

There’s no need to waste money on taxis when the public transit system in NYC is one of the finest on the planet. And you never have to wait long for a subway, especially when you’re traveling up and down the West and East sides of Manhattan. Though fares are only $2, I suggest buying a MetroCard, which allows you to switch from bus to train for free. A one-day card will set you back $7.50, while the 7-day MetroCard costs only $25.
