There are plenty of things to see and do in Baltimore, and about as many places to stay while you’re at it — Baltimore hotels aren’t exactly what anyone would call few and far between — but there are perhaps no sites as historically significant as Battle Monument, a 39-foot marble statue that stands in remembrance of the Battle of Baltimore. If you’re not up on your history, this was one of the deciding battles in the War of 1812 that inspired Francis Scott Key to write a little poem called “The Star-Spangled Banner” which would eventually become the national anthem.
Of course, Battle Monument is far from the only historically significant site in town — Fort McHenry National Monument, for one, was the actual location of the above mentioned battle — but it’s a great place to start and work your way outward. The nearest of the cheap Baltimore hotels to this monument is the Quality Inn Downtown, which is literally within walking distance of Battle Monument Park and the famous Inner Harbor. The Quality Inn Downtown was remodeled in 2009 and charges rates just over $100 per night, a sweet deal when compared with other Baltimore hotels in the immediate vicinity.
