Content by: Steve Klein of The King Center
Established in 1968 by Mrs. Coretta Scott King, The King Center is the official, living memorial dedicated to the advancing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., leader of America's greatest nonviolent movement for justice, equality and peace.
Located in Atlanta's Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, The King Center's Freedom Hall Complex attracts more than 650,000 visitors annually from all over the world. Visitors pay homage to Dr. King and view unique exhibits illustrating his life and teachings while also spotlighting the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King. Visitors can also take in The King Center's Library and Archives, gift shops, King's birth home and the final resting place of Dr. and Mrs. King.
Across the street from The King Center's Freedom Hall Complex, the MLK National Historic Site also provides extensive exhibits on Dr. King and an auditorium featuring special educational programs pertaining to Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement he led, along with impressive statues of Gandhi and Kunte Kinte, from the 'Roots' saga. Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King, his father and grandfather preached is also located in the MLK National Historic Site. Taken together, the MLK facilities provide one of America's most inspiring and uplifting historic sites.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change
Financial setbacks notwithstanding, the King Center is a must-see destination for a complete education on the civil rights movement. Established in 1980 by Coretta Scott King, the Center houses a memorial, an archive and a library where artifacts such as field papers from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee can be found. In 1980, Mrs. King moved Dr. King's crypt to this location where it rests in the Center's courtyard. See Atlanta hotels
